I'm a retired automotive technician so take my advice with a grain of salt. When you install something forcing significantly more air into the engine (Supercharger) you immediately need to recalibrate jetting (or injector tune) to increase fuel delivery- especially on the upper half of the rev range. Bogging on combustion engines is a symptom of fuel starvation. Increase fuel delivery incrementally until the bog goes away. Your goal should be to run slightly rich to keep temperatures down and ensure you won't damage the engine. The other thing to think about is the ignition timing which needs to be recalibrated slightly for forced induction. You may need to advance it a touch. Good luck. FYI- a very cool little engine. I wish we had things like this when I was a kid.
@ThePower1037
@ThePower1037 Жыл бұрын
The only thing I would add to that is since the oiling system in this engine is the fuel, I'd all a little bit more oil into the methanol to keep temps low, also the timing will be hard to adjust, because the glow plugs at boost tend to overheat and pre-ignite.
@MidMadn

I heard the bog as well in the intro. Was surprised about what seemed slightly poor throttle response. Generally, I expect a well tuned roots setup to be pretty snappy. But, you do have it backwards on the timing. When you compress the intake charge with a supercharger, or turbocharger, the molecules in the intake charge are closer together and this causes combustion to happen faster. Therefore, you need to retard timing from what it would have been naturally aspirated to prevent detonation. The same is true with nitros, which some would call CHEMICAL supercharging.

In bigger engines, bogging down at high RPM usually means too much fuel, doesn't it? Unless everything is getting too hot and it's expanding, causing internal friction? The exhaust looks pretty rich to me, too, but I'm not real familiar with nitro/gas RC cars either, certainly not anything in this caliber.
@YZ-YZ-
@YZ-YZ- Жыл бұрын
Likely too much friction at high rpm that the engine struggles to overcome. The blower is probably producing little (if any) added power, while contributing to parasitic losses and heat.

@jsmith1871
@jsmith1871 Жыл бұрын
@@sourandjaded2586the fueling is still an issue beyond just winding the needles out. Traditional automotive carbs suffer in supercharger setups as the vacuum of the blower prevents the power valve from opening under WOT, this is due to it being actuated as the engine vacuum decreases while the supercharger increases carb vacuum as it spins. These hobby carbs don't have any of the circuitry required to properly fuel this application or make use of boost reference and winded needles will just muddy the throttle resolution elsewhere. How does forced induction increase your compression ratio? The comp ratio is set by the material properties of the engine components. Do you mean volumetric efficiency? If so it's directly benefitted by forced induction. A thicker head gasket can reduce the compression ratio which can assist in avoiding detonation. Forced induction enhances your volumetric efficiency provided you can adequately fuel the application. Literally everything hinges on the carbs.
@kleetus92
@kleetus92 Жыл бұрын
@sourand jaded Only thing I can think of is the carbs aren't designed for that much airflow and are going lean, or, the 2 to 1 feeder can't supply the fuel, might need a separate one for each. You wouldn't think it would need that much here, but who knows. Other thing is might need different glow plugs, might be blowin these ones out.
@thunderdick6117
@thunderdick6117 Жыл бұрын
It's not a fuel issue it's an air flow issue. The reason you can hear such an audible whine is due to back pressure in the blower case from the blower being so restricted . They made it like that on purpose and the two very small outlets from the blower are clear evidence of that . This blower was made for sound not performance . That's the reason it's bogging it's not getting enough air you can hear that the blower makes less noise at high rpm because the vacuum from the engine is effecting the back pressure in the blower it's being lowered because the engine is trying so hard to get air . If the air outlets were bigger it would breathe better but you wouldn't get the cool blower whine .

It's a draw through set up, the supercharger is actually sucking air (and fuel) out of the carbs and the pushing it into the engine, I suspect it's actually running rich up top due to the suction from the supercharger pulling too much fuel through, it has more of a rich bog sound to it

I really wanna see that Dyno brought out for this na, and out of the box supercharged, then I wanna see you millout the top of that blower and make your own intake plate with 4 big carbs. This things lean up top and blowers generally need a 1.5-3:1 intake to outlet ratio. You might get two carbs to flow the fuel if you drill the bore for the needle valve and anyother restriction in the fuel.

Really cool build! Regarding the issues with WOT performance, there are a few things from the (big) car world that might help: Spark plug gap - When you up the boost level you normally need to close down the spark plug gap to get effective combustion. Not sure how this would work with glow plugs, do they make them with bigger or hotter elements? Also boosted motors normally run less timing advance vs NA motors, since glow plugs are always you can't adjust this but I think you would get similar results by adjusting the octane of the fuel. It's a bummer they made the pully on the supercharger so small, would have been a easy way to get more boost. You could create an additional gear box between the belt and the supercharger, to give you more ratios to play with. CNC project time!

@stevenboswell4524

The bog seems to be rpm related, not just throttle position. Which indicates fuel starvation. With a full scale engine, this is fixed by adding a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator. This raises fuel pressure to increase fuel delivery as boost increases. Otherwise, the carbs will be either overly rich at low boost/part throttle, or overly lean at higher boost/full throttle/high rpm. Either one causes a bog. The trick is, applying that to this small scale version. The creator was smart and talented enough to build this incredible engine, I dare say he already knows everything I just typed, but applying it brings up all sorts of issues and requires quite a bit of knowledge. I'm sure the creator will end up getting it tuned right and I can't wait to see the final product!

I have this engine, and I can tell that without fixing the issues with the mixture distribution (way too narrow channels and wrong cylinder grouping per carb), boost is going to be nothing more than a work-around. My careful estimate is that fixing the intake issues will liberate at the very least the same, if not MORE power, than will fitting the Rootes Blower on the existing manifold. As the engine is, the cylinders are grouped spacially: Front four on one carb and rear four on the other. This leads to 3 cylinders drawing air near simultaneously (within 270 degrees of crankrotation, leading to two units inducing at the same time=interference between cylinders) while the last one of the group can draw without interference. Correct crouping should be "most forward and most rearward unit of one bank together with middle 2 units of the other bank" and vice versa. That will lead to evenly spaced induction strokes (one induction per 180 degrees of crank for each carb). That will result in all cylinders being charged equally. Wider channels to each cylinder will also help, because right now the branches in the distributer are narrower than the porting in the head (restrictive, but also loss of velocity, de-atomizing).

Sounds almost like it is starving for air when you open the throttle like the butterfly setup is too small and restricting the airflow. Fuel seems like it is set right as the smoke doesn't really change when you cycle rpm range. You can definitely hear the whine and how much air it is trying to move. You might have to port the heads to make it work properly with that system as well. All in all the work you do amazes me every time I check in to see what you are doing.

When running a screw blower that engine is going to need tons of fuel, it sounds like it’s running way too lean to me, the way it wants to fall on its face at higher RPM’s, those little kit motors are really not designed to run at high RPM’s for any length of time anyway. But I guarantee if you fatten up the full mixture it would run a lot better. I would look into some bigger CFM carburetors for it if were me. Good luck with it .

I would love to see a boost gauge on that somewhere to see if it’s actually making power or just making noise

Man! that charger sounds sooo freakng good! definitely fuel starved on the top end. on a full sized engine you would re-jet bigger but on this, maybe the siphon feed isn't enough? maybe a pump/fuel loop system like fuel injection? or some type of pulse pump linked to boost pressure? Also with boost on a full sized engine, you would advance the timing a bit with boost. I'm thinking that may be a tuning option here as well. I genuinely want to see the charger work on this build..

With that sound, you need to change the supercharger to have a diamond shaped opening, and put a modified GT Falcon painted black as its body

You should put that engine model on a rc muscle car specifically a 60-90's charger and the turbo engine model on the supra mk4
