I visited Nijo Castle earlier this year and enjoyed the Sakura blooming

It must be stunning here with the Sakura! It’s worth visiting Kyoto for all 4 seasons!

@@onlyinjapanGO , but hotel is super expensive during the peak season, spring and autumn! I paid S$300+ for a single room at APA hotel at Kyoto station. Convenient location but just too expensive. Keio Plaza in Tokyo is much cheaper same period. Room is bigger n breakfast included.

This was my favorite Castle when I went to Japan!

I really like the fact that even the vending machine blends into the colours of the area. It’s a great attention to detail.

My first day in Kyoto, I got lost trying to walk from my hotel to Nijo Castle. I found myself in a residential area. I saw a woman coming out of her house and seemed to be heading to her car, and I got her attention. She seemed surprised at first that I was speaking to her in Japanese when I told her I was lost and had no idea what direction Nijo Castle was. Even though I had interrupted what she was doing, she was very polite and helped me get back heading in the right direction. It took me a while to get to Nijo Castle, but eventually I did get there. Other than being tired and my feet already feeling a little sore, I was no worse for wear, so I actually considered getting lost to be a fun kind of an adventure. It was a kind of interaction with the everyday people living in Kyoto that I might not have had if I did not just take the chance of trying to walk there. Small interactions like that are among some of my treasured memories of living in Japan.

I’m only at 10:04 so far, but I was there last week, and going into the castle was AMAZING! They didn’t allow photo, tho. The floors make the sounds of mockingbirds. Was a phenomenal experience I recommend you go back to visit (not sure if you did in the rest of the vid, but still watching).

I went there during an opening at night and enjoyed it. Different views from the day!

Japanese gardens have a magic all of their own with how they are laid out and the use of rocks etc...those odd shaped trees look like they have been deliberately pruned to look like that...

Nijo Castle deserves a video in the main channel with more history and a sight of the building that of can visit

You could be right! There is a lot built during Ieyasu Tokugawa’s age!! It’s an important part of Japan’s history.

Hey John, I've been to Nijo-jo before, but it's bit of a shame you & your viewers missed out on seeing inside some of the buildings, particularly the Ninomaru. Inside it has some spectacular artwork on painted screens/doors in many of the rooms, with lots of gold and gold trimmings, and also interesting things like "secret rooms" for bodyguards. Also the floors in the corridors which were purpose designed to squeak/creak as a sort of intruder alarm. As far as the interior of Japanese ancient buildings in the country, this rates right up there. I strongly recommend going inside if you're ever there again ;-) Great to see you're in places like this anyway, definitely up my alley.
@onlyinjapanGO6 жыл бұрын
I am leaving it up to the viewers to visit it in person for that. I thought about going in but decided to just cruise around and give a taste. I do recommend going inside to everyone else!
@japankofun6 жыл бұрын
Fair call - good idea to leave some treats for those who visit to discover themselves. Interesting place both inside and outside.
@Naapeajaea6 жыл бұрын
ONLY in JAPAN * GO yeh, I remember the inside as an amazing area, I recall mannequins dressed in traditional costume depicting traditional scenes with descriptions in many rooms. But I seem to remember a no filming policy... but, I’m sure you being the influential man that you are John can pull some strings... 😂

Hi John-San, nice video. Thank you to make this live stream for us. Could your best pictures be used to make an e-book? I can help if you like this idea. I will really enjoy if you show more details about the species in the garden. Looks very beautiful and peaceful.

@carlolsen5120 Жыл бұрын
The "jo" in "Nijo" doesn't mean castle, it's a different character that's part of the actual name. So the Japanese name for Nijo castle is indeed "Nijojo" Japanese drives you nuts with homonyms.

I thought it was funny that you mentioned the security guard with the chair. We spent 10 days last year in the Kansai area and my biggest complaint is never finding anywhere to sit while sightseeing. The only time we could sit was when eating or if we managed to catch an empty train. I’m not sure if you’ve done it before, but my wife was washi shopping in Kyoto. Perhaps an episode on Washi Making for the main channel.
@onlyinjapanGO6 жыл бұрын
Yes! Sometimes it’s hard to find a chair in Japan!! My feet were killing me after walking all day and sat on the riverbank in Kyoto. Only rest was sitting on the bus - lots of 💺 seats! Washi paper episode is a good idea!

Nice video of the moat, gardens, paths surrounding Nijo Jo. However, please don't think that after watching this video you don't have to go in. You would be missing the beautiful artwork and the amazing Nightingale Corridor inside the castle.

I saw that too! I was worried about it before buying but it seems is only .01% of the phones and mostly the MAX size. The video on the XS is really impressive so I’m glad I waited and didn’t buy the X but I do wish I could wait for the pixel 3 to see what Google has :)

9:53 - John: "This is more what I am interested in" - In the center of the screen was a hot looking girl in xtreme short jeans and white long sleeve top... Oh yeah I can see what is interesting **snicker** 33:11 I have that Kyoto Coca Cola can. Bought it at Isetan KLCC(Malaysia), during a Kyoto festival event. John, if people don't pay to go into Nijo-jo, how is the city going to maintain that historical site?

Really? I feel like the cost would be at least double that if it was in Canada.. the historic house in my area costs that much to enter and it's not that big. The castle in Toronto is over $30.
