I think this could be a good move for both teams. The Nets couldnt get much more than that, this was a tough situation. The Mavs get a top duo, Luka the ‘help’ he was looking for. I worry about their defense tough, I am waiting for them to make some more moves. They definitily lack on the wing and rim protection

Hes a distraction, plain and simple, as a fan, he seems like a baby. We want to watch players that want/need to be out there every single game, players you have to drag off the court, players like Jordan that will play through the flu or like Kobe and play through injury. I am a Mavs fan but i will not cheer for him, I just don't respect him, regardless of how talented he is

Hear me out: This trade is a good thing but not for the reason of winning a conference / chip. Luka is a star, he is the real deal. I think that other players of Luka/Irving's caliber will be watching how Luka handles being with Irving. The talent level and attitude of future players that Luka will play with will be determined by this trade. The Mavs' relationship with their lone star is at a tipping point, who they get in the next year/two years will determine whether or not they get a championship in as many years. I hope it all goes well, but if it doesn't, I can see the Luka Mavs being yet another "what if" team.

Yes, now they're better than they ever were with Kyrie but it was looking realll iffy for a minute. Overall I'm extremely happy with where the Celtics are obvi, but subtracting Kyrie did not immediately make us a contender or anything.

i feel like it gets lost in translation that Kyrie was supposed to be a Robin again in Boston. the team he agreed to had Gordon Hayward, he goes down and then Kai still charts top 10 in MVP polls. he said “smd” and won like 20 games. he had more bad series’ than good series in the playoffs but that team played WAY better than they were supposed to losing someone as big as GH. the thing is ppl don’t talk about how good he really was so Kai gets all the blame even though bro snapped his tibia. then the young guys end up developing at a tremendous rate due to more playing time at the wings. then maintaining that system and trust is what has allowed them to sustain success in the East and they still haven’t won it all. everyone keeps tryna make every situation alike the when all basketball situations are different.

Are you a new fan of the Celtics? Celtics made a conference final when Kyrie was injured, and lost in a game 7 to the Cavs. And then the following year they were gentlemen swept by the Bucks with Kyrie in round 2. The narrative about Kyrie was there because it was a real, tangible, evident difference. Go back and re-read all the issues he caused in the lockerroom with guys like Terry Rozier and Marcus Smart. Kyrie halted their progress. Subtracting Kyrie made the Celtics better, any "Celtics fan" who disagrees isn't a Celtics fan.

But the thing is when the help defense comes, he could not pass it to someone who can make their own shots. Brunson and kyrie are bucket getters. On the Mavs not paying Brunson, obviously no idea what went on internally for the Mavs and how much they wanted or may have undervalued him...but the Knicks literally broke the rules to get him so not sure it is entirely fair to blame the Mavs for losing him.

Jalen Brunson just wasnt the one guy to get them over the hump but he would have taken a lot of the available salary, hence limiting their options to build the team. Cuban probably doesnt want the same thing happening with Luka that happened with Dirk. Dirk's title is one of the most meaningfull imho in the last 30 years because he was the one guy who never switched teams, never ring hunted. But as an owner to be close to the hump but only getting there once every 15 years while spending a lot and having a superstar, at least for a guy like Cuban is probably not what he is looking for.
@mambaASI
@mambaASI Жыл бұрын
yes it is entirely fair. Mavs coulda signed him initially for 4 years / 55 mil. They did not. Then brunson goes off the rest of the season and into the playoffs. At that point he's worth double what he was initially. Knicks were doing stuff behind the scenes to try and get him at that point. But if the mavs "overpaid" at that point, let's say 4 years / 110 mil, he probably woulda signed with mavs. Mavs didn't try to beat the knicks offer of 4 years / 100 mil.
@pinobluevogel6458
@pinobluevogel6458 Жыл бұрын
I believe Jalen Brunson is good enough to get them over the 'Hump', whatever you believe that is. (winning the finals?) The proof is in what they did last season, they made the conference finals and lost to the stacked Warriors team and eventual champion. That is not a bad result at all for a second playoff. This year seems different though, they haven't 'clicked' yet, like they did last year in december. Some games they look unbeatable, others they lose in a blowout to a not so great team. Luka and Josh Green have been the only players who improved this year. Maybe you can count Wood, as he wasn't on the team and he's quite solid now. Apart from Dinwiddie, who was great, but not better than last year, everyone else regressed or was injured, or both. Taking on Kyrie is a balsy move, I can't say I don't like it. Lets hope and pray he will stay on the floor, as this guy has historically always been great if he plays.

As a Mavs fan, mark Cuban butchered Re signing Brunson. They could’ve signed him for half of what he ended up getting before last season started and they didn’t. They waited and he dropped multiple 30 point games in the playoffs and a 40 point game without luka. Now he looks like an all star. But if he’s still here I don’t think we get kyrie so I’m not to upset

Correct me if I am wrong but why Kyrie should not ask for max contract?! He is the closer in the team, top 5 clutch players in NBA, top 5 pg ever, best handler ever, best finisher off the glass ever, a champion and a real FMVP. Is it because he missed some games this year and last year with NO FAULT on his behalf?! Banning him from games for comments on a documentary and being unvaxed is NOT a basketball issue and it's on the Nets. It's sad that 99% of media (including jj) and many (stupid) fans don't want to admit it.
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv Жыл бұрын
If you can’t see how a big chunk of games that he missed in choosing to not be vaccinated, which is his choice to make, or how the way he handled the documentary fall out where he didn’t get suspended until he was asked point blank about his stance on anti semitism and had a clear opportunity to say he was against it and didn’t do so were his fault then nobody can help you there. And then adding that on to him missing a lot of games for things out of his control like injuries resulted in him only playing in roughly half of the games possible during his time with the Nets. And the decisions on his part that constantly spark media attention and distract the team to boot isn’t the guy you guarantee a max contract to. Dallas gave him a new deal but notice it wasn’t a max deal either. The nets paid him $124M for him to play around half of the possible games while he was there. He’s missed around 1/3 of the possible games in his entire career. He’s forced out of every team he’s played on. So to act like he missed “some games” and that none of it is his fault is the goofiest take possible. A team giving him a max deal after only having him play half of his games already would be absolutely stupid. It doesn’t matter how good he is if he’s only available half the time - notice all those championships he’s won since the one with LeBron. Imagine if he had been vaccinated and immediately apologized and disavowed anti semitism. That’s around 40 games more he plays for the team. Maybe such a thing would’ve led to getting a max deal versus asking for a max deal while rarely being available. What a novel concept

JJ - you’re better than this… The Cavs tried to trade him (with LeBron’s blessing) - after coming off of a career year - before he privately asked to be traded. He’s supposed to be committed to a team that tries to trade him behind his back? And why do critiques of his time in Boston completely ignore the first season there - when he led a top 2-3 team for most of the season until he got injured? He also told us that his second year issues were due to him losing his grandfather and not knowing how to process it in a healthy way (which he’s also apologized for). The Nets have made it clear that they weren’t really interested in re-signing him for over a year - and their contract offer included an unprecedented “win a championship” clause. He’s supposed to be committed to a team that isn’t committed to him? If anything, his performance last season demonstrated his “commitment” to his team: despite being uniquely subjected to an irrational local ordinance that prevented him from playing home games most of the season, as well as the Nets choosing to exacerbate that by not only refusing to allow him to play road games but not even allowing him to be around the team for half the season, he kept himself in basketball shape and remained at an All-Star level of play. Finally: the fact that his teammates almost unanimously like him and enjoy playing with him undermines claims of his lack of commitment. (You also weren’t a #1 pick and HoF caliber player, so you can’t really compare your mindset to his.)

I think it worked with Bron because he likes to defer. Bron is a great cutter, he likes to pass and play off ball, but he can also be ball dominant when he wants to and get into some iso situations. If that’s not a guy’s game or he doesn’t want to be in that role, I think it’s going to be tough for Kyrie to play with them.

It comes down to responsibility. These teams are literally a company with workers providing a service. You have to adhere to the rules and stipulations of the company in pursuit of that service (hopefully a championship) . There is always a threshold to "do what you want" in ANY institution. They aren't telling him to be different, they are saying, because of his history, they can't trust him enough to pay him. He can go and say whatever he wants, he is just going to have to do it "somewhere else".

In this situation only one question is relevant, what if those who don't believe in Kyrie and Luka are very wrong. What if Kyrie surprises all of basketball fans who are pessimistic and doubtful, what if Kyrie finally found the right teammate for himself who is humble enough to play with him, what if he found in Luka a real teammate who will never ask, who is the number one, or who is the number two, and together they will solve everything that time brings them. Maybe Kyrie founded someone who really listens to him and understands what he's saying. Doubts about the defense are not necessarily a problem because the trade is still happening, so not everything is finished. I sincerely hope that there is at least some truth in what I wrote, I really want it immensely, because at first, when I heard about the trade, I had mixed feelings, part of me was sad and the other part of me was very happy, so I hope that the side which makes me happy will win.

literally everyone remembers that. also, that is years and years ago. even at the time before the trade to Dallas, people were aware that he was injury ridden and a lot of people were also aware that the fact NY traded the "unicorn" for basically 2 feature first round picks was a telltale. It was a 7 player swap, but outside Porzingis it was pretty much a wash, nothing spectacular. So yeah, if someone trades the unicorn for 2 picks (where you dont know what that even does for you) you know something is wrong.

Good post like always but another issue is really interesting that so far was not really addressed much by anybody: Would be good to hear how they will make it work. What plays do they run? How do they share the ball? 2 guys that need the ball and have the ball a lot and penetrate and are not used to catch and shoot etc. Obviously Doncic is a hell smart player that played under different circumstances and in different roles with different sytems and co-players in Europe so guess he can adjust but it will still take Kyrie to also adjust. Not sure the egos work, not sure 2 ball--dominat guys work. SD and Powell worked in combination with Luka. The off-court stuff ill leave aside with Kyrie and also if its worth it considering the risk that Kyrie will not sign an extension with Dallas - in that case Dallas is fukced. I think actually a great catch and shoot guy or big man would have made much more sense for Dallas but yeah if it works like LBJ and Kyrie then thats a an ingenius move but LBJ and what he was then is still different from Luka and also Kyrie now is different personality and maybe so to say authoritywise. Anyways would be glad if you could go a bit in depth how you think it will work and play out on the court

It's pretty simple. Even before he became controversial, Kyrie was always good for missing 20 games a year due to injury. His talent simply does not make up for how little basketball he actually plays.

While we should acknowledge that kyrie held his belief despite monetary cost, we should also acknowledge that his belief is toxic. Suppose a white guy is willing to sacrifice money to hold on to his belief that black people are satan worshiper who want to destroy white people's society (similar to how kyrie believe jews intentionally stole the identity of Israelite from black people). Then his belief needs to be criticized regardless how brave he is, or whether the belief is religious.

My question is, and we live in an internet world now so I don't fully know if it's true - That Kyrie was offered an incentive based contract and that one of the incentives was winning a championship for him to get fully paid. (I'm fine with it being incentive based because of how he's been off the court and only playing less than a full seasons worth of games with KD since they linked up) But my issue with him getting paid his full amount based on him winning a championship would set a terrible precident for players going forward. You see a lot of incentive based contracts in the NFL, but this is the NBA. If he were to do that he could open up the floodgates for terrible contracts for future players going forward. What's y'all's take on that?

My question is you you trade him to the worse team in the league in his last year what happens with that clause? Does he get the full amount if he gets traded? Also I'm ok with Bonuses. Just offer fair but smaller contract and add in a clause in case you win a championship you get a bonus. But I don't know if that's possible with NBA contracts.

He primarily played off-ball at Real Madrid his whole pre-NBA career and won at every level. He only plays this way -heliocentric / 39% usage rate - because it's the only way his team has been able to win / make the playoffs his first 4 seasons. He's 5th in assists the last 3 years (and 5th this year). Kyrie is a great addition, and how well he plays with Luka will surprise a lot of people.
