Thanks! I bought an z 550 being lost in a barn for almost 30 years. Spent 100€. And drove it home. It is 37 years old, with 24.000km driven and i love it. Now i need to check and change everything and you really helped me, how to change oil and filter. Thank you and greetings from Germany!

That balance seems to always be in the way. Unscrew the filter cover completely and lots of jiggling and it will come out. If you can pull that bolt out a little it will allow the cover to clear...

I always have used Castro oil in all of my motorcycles usually 20/50 if it’s a warm weather area and a little thinner oil for a cold climate say Castro GTX 10/ 30 viscosity but Castro synthetic oil is made especially for higher

These old "Metric" bikes really like Rotella 15w40 Diesel oil. But really any oil for a Diesel truck works well and does not have the clutch killing Friction Modifiers.

You need a camera helper to see something besides the bottom of the bike and show how you put the filter components on the bolt before inserting it back in the bike otherwise good job thanks and speaking of stripping out your drain plug the last owner ruined the drain plug on my new old bike and I’m having a hard time getting it out because it’s a 40 year old motorcycle a Kawasaki csr 1000 guess I’m going to have to cut a groove in the head of the drain plug to get it out and find a new one to replace it it’s so bad I can’t even get a pair of vice grips on it or even a small pipe wrench I’m worried now that he wasn’t changing the oil for a long long time and it hardly has any oil in the engine and it’s blacker than the ace of spades ♠️ but he said that it’s been sitting in the garage for five years since he bought it from his friend I hope I didn’t get a burned up bike that looks good lol we shall see. Thanks for showing us how to assemble the oil filter components and the tip of using a good socket instead of a wrench 🔧.
@johnsbikesandblues7174 Жыл бұрын
I work by myself. So unless you come over to do the camera work? You can use a siphon to remove the old oil. Not as good as draining it, but better than tearing up your motorcycle. I had to weld a nut on a Honda drain plug once. No fun but it did work.
@boopiedistura7 жыл бұрын
sir why diesel oil?
@johnsbikesandblues71747 жыл бұрын
I use Rotella or Castrol diesel oil, 15w 40, in all of my metric bikes. It's formulated to work with a wet clutch, as these bikes employ. It also meets JASO standards specified by the motorcycle manufacturer and it's usually less than $15 at Wal-mart for a 4 qt jug.

What is the model of the oil filter you used?
@johnsbikesandblues71747 жыл бұрын
I don't remember the exact part number. I bought the filter at the local Kawasaki dealer and he provided the part for the kz750.

does the can go on the bottom of filter or top ?? different year kawi manuals show it one way and next one shows other way so I don't know which is correct. ZRX1200 same filter but shows can on top

Diesel oil?!
@ww9l4 жыл бұрын
Yes Diesel 15W40 is high detergent and has no friction modifiers and designed to be use with a wet clutch. Perfect for these old Japanese motorcycles. Side benefit is that the Rotella oil is only about $12 to $15 per gallon at local Wal-Mart.
@colinhall8998 Жыл бұрын
Never ever use semi or fully synthetic oil in 70’s bikes, it’ll ruin your starter clutch. Use mineral as specified in the manual, trust me!
@brandonboxninja12666 жыл бұрын
You know maybe if you had the camera in a position where we could actually see you working on the filter and everything this would actually be a good tutorial. You basically talked half the video while absolutely nothing happened on screen. Waste of time. -shakes my head-
