There was a tramway up to Mt. Lowe trail camp (different from Mt. Lowe) back in the twenties. Also the Pasadena Freeway (then parkway) had an elevated bike path from downtown LA to Pasadena. If you cross the road that continues up to the MT Wilson observatory there is a hiking trail that goes down to the Valley Forge camp ground where there is a stream and a sizeable (for the desert) waterfall.

Fun video, enjoyed “meeting” Darren’s dad. Liked using public transport to support the trip. Just got a Metro-North (NY) rail pass and did a trip up the Hudson and back to NYC on the train. Didn’t find a spork though…

@@radbikeadventure It is. Fortunately, I have already learned how to use chopsticks in first sushi restaurants appearing in our city. Without such practical skill, I would need to use my friend's spoon after he finished his meal.

Looks like fun. Which do you like better, bike touring or bikepacking? I'm getting into bikepacking because I'm tired of roads full of cars and obnoxious drivers.
@radbikeadventure
@radbikeadventure 3 жыл бұрын
It's a tough call because they both feel very different and it really depends on what you like. Touring is fab because you get to experience many towns and little villages you may not experience otherwise. You also have easier access to supplies or help should you need it. Many more cultural experiences and interactions too. And there's nothing like a beautiful road descent where you can just fly! Bikepacking is wonderful because you are amidst nature. Solitude, views, wildlife (could be good or bad!), challenging terrain, no cars to worry about. Bikepacking is definitely harder but very rewarding. For us, we like a mix of the two!

Hello RaD!! I'm building a bike to travel across de US, I've a question for you, what's the size of tires you use to support all the weight you carry on your bikes, I wonder could be 42-622 (28x1.60). Thank you for your help.

Someone else on the trail told us it was potable and it looked to be (they said it’s still LA city water from when the tavern was active) but haven’t done research to confirm that. Also not sure if it’s always running

Sometimes it’s a tiny drip and takes a while to fill a bottle so scary to rely on. There is also a creek below the camp ground that is usually dry but on the rare wet winter it will have water to filter and drink at camp.

How do you fund your trips? Between trips do you work a lot and save or do you have other methods to recommend?
@radbikeadventure
@radbikeadventure 3 жыл бұрын
The longer trips, we save, save, save and then are cautious with spendings while we are on the road (we averaged about $500-600 usd per person on our 16 month trip). Just try to be frugal with your spendings if you are trying to save up for a big trip. Don't buy stuff ya don't need and try not to eat out (that always is the biggest expense besides rent/accommodation). We also have a video about our entire trip budget here which sould be of help to you!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnfUoneDgN6CaJo

What's the best tire size for weigh ?
@radbikeadventure
@radbikeadventure 3 жыл бұрын
For weight? That has more to do with the rim, hub and tire choice. Or do you mean for carrying weight? Wider gives a more plush ride. Larger (29) gives you more roll per pedal stroke which is better for climbing and rolling over stuff. 27.5 is more maneuverable tho. Some folks still love 26 in. For width, bikepacking tires are usually anywhere from 2.0 to 5.0 (fat bike!) . Much of this is personal preference and riding environment and conditions.

Can you please make your content inclusive and accessible to everyone by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is very hard to enjoy your content relying on only the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
