I find it interesting that 90% of tourists (especially Americans) visit southern Germany, specifically Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, because it confirms all the stereotypes associated with the country. As someone from northern Germany I understand why, it’s really beautiful down there, but I‘m also a little sad, bc we have really beautiful sights and cities in Northern Germany as well (like Lübeck, Bremen and Lüneburg). Besides that many tourists from America with German ancestry probably don’t know that their ancestors most likely came from areas like Schleswig-Holstein, Niedersachsen and other Northern states lol.

Americans dont always have ulterior motives when traveling lol sometimes they simply want to see something we know that we dont have back home. The cities you named are not well known or show up on travel guides so the average traveler probably doesn't have them on their radar. Most germans who visit America also go to the same 3 cities because those are the ones that are "famous" for something even if they dont have much to offer according to locals. Also, old traditional architecture is usually fascinating to Americans because most of our "old" architecture is only a few hundred years old.

Having been born here, I can only say thank you, you've made all the right choices :) Still, there is so much more! For example, (should you ever revisit Lüneburg again) if you like dining in medieval brick walled cellars, make sure to visit Mälzer Brau-und Tafelhaus, they're just next door to Brauhaus Krone, where you've been and their medieval cellar is just amazing to eat some hearty food in. Also Sabacca, an outstanding Tapas bar (very cosy and again in an old medieval cellar^^) right at the towns marketsquare, which also has a great Gin collection before finishing the day at the Old Dubliner, our most beautiful pub at the old harbour, sitting atop the river opposite the old wooden crane you mentioned. Have fun on your next destination in Celle 👍

Luneburg, Luneburg Heath, Celle, down to Hildesheim, up to Lübeck and Schwerin and Wismar at the Baltic would be a perfect round trip. You could plan it by bicycle or e-bike. The area is mainly flat. It gets more hilly towards the Baltic. The ice-age shaped the land there in that way.

@9:14, the composer Georg Böhm was the organist in the Johanneskirche back in the mid 17th. century and well into the 18th. The baroque organ is one of the most famous in Germany, but includes pipes from centuries before that.

Actually, there wasn't water pumped down: The salt stock underneath Lüneburg is naturally washed out by ground water, resulting in the Sole, water that holds a lot of salt in solution. Pumping that up left the cavities that lead to the sinking of the town. I can recommend visiting the Salt Museum Lüneburg to learn about that part of my hometown! :D Glad you enjoyed visiting Lüneburg. :)
