Ok something to consider... "Citric Acid Complex" could mean that they don't actually have the exact same amount of citric acid. And the percentages could be equivalent because it's evened out by whatever else they include as part of this "complex." Hm... We'll never know for sure, but even so... I stand my ground on loving these affordable alternatives!

Actually the pH of the shampoo makes the biggest difference! When you bleach or damage hair, the normal pH of 4-5 (slighly acidic) gets more neutral to basic, and your hair is frizzier/drier/more rough. By using an acidic shampoo with pH 2-3, you can get the hair back to it's original pH, so less damaged. The citric acid in this shampoo makes it acidic. So it doesn't really matter if it's 7, 5 or 3%, the pH of the product is the most important.

I have checked the pH with pH paper of the redken treatment 14%, elvive treatment 12%, elvive conditioner 10%, elvive serum 20% they are all the same : around 5 like most of the product so I think it s more the property of the citric acid itself (the AHA itself) which works more than the pH thing because my moroccan oil masks have the same pH hahaha

That’s actually a very genius move by a brand. Why let someone else dupe your own high end product? lol love that for them
@sovrappensiero1

Exactly! Plus, they know their market segments. They know some people will be loyal to Redken and/or high-end haircare because they believe it’s better, etc. Other people won’t or can’t pay those prices…but they’ll buy a “bond repair” product in the drugstore. So this way they capture these two market segments.

Something to consider - A shampoo is to clean your hair, a conditioner is to condition it, a repair treatment is to repair it. If you are strapped for cash use a cheap shampoo and conditioner that works for your hair and a repair treatment. Shampoo is on and off your head so quick it's unlikely to do much repair.

I buy cheap shampoo, use good professional conditioner, when I can afford it, (otherwise in the meantime, use cheap conditioner) and must use good treatments, heat protection products, etc. The shampoo is there to remove the oils…at is all, and we rinse it off. The really magic comes, after, from styling my hair….shampoo and conditioner don’t do that…. I’m still waiting for (and wishing) there was shampoo and conditioners where you can just “wash and wear your hair”.

As a hairstylist who is certified by Redken on my country, we were teached that Redken creates the formulas. They have the rights for a period of time and after that period, they "share" the formula to the "cheaper" brands of them so they modify them to have similar results but using just some % of the original formula so like that the "high end brand (aka Redken)" will always have a better product. That made sense to me when they explain to me and never questioned until now that I'm thinking about haha. Anyway... that make sense to me until now :) since they are the same company anyway

The theory is that it bonds with the hair where water world normally bond and makes the hair water-resistant by extension. The hair can absorb or attached to water in the presence of alpha hydroxy acids. And we know that hair that has less hydration is considered looking and feeling more healthy.

I have used the redken acidic bonding and the loreal ever pure bond strengthening...i also dye my hair natural and fantasy colors with permanent and semi permanent dyes and my hair is naturally curly. I can 100% say that redken gives me the best results, it leaves my hair feeling soft and healthy, it had very little bleeding of hair color whether its permanent or semi permanent, and the leave in treatment they have is 100% to die for. While the loreal ever pure left my hair feeling heavy, and a mixture of dry/greasy all over. It also caused a lot more color bleeding when using the products which was a huge shocker for me.a As for the loreal elvive I have not used it but their products have always left my hair soft and like a weaker version of redken, but only issue is it does cause more bleeding than redken. Honestly I wish we could get the loreal elvive here in the us as its usually cheaper than redken and would possibly be good if i added some of the semi permanent color im using into it to fight the color bleeding/loss. Thanks for the video though 100% didn't know about the elvive one

Im pretty sure this new bond repair line by Elvive is the same Loreal Fiberceutic, an AMAZING line that is pretty much the precursor of Olapex/current bond treatments. It would literally revive dead hair from the abyss in the first use hahaha. Right after Olaplex came Loreal discontinued this line to focus on updating the formulas of the pre existing professional lines and now are relaunching it with a different name for the final consumer. I used to work with them and I’m really familiar with the old Fiberceutic. The smell, texture, ingredients and results of this new Bond Repair line are extremely similar to the Fiberceutic one.

Dream legths has ingredients like amodimethicone that coats your hair and gives immediate results(which is also great). Bond repair products work over time gradually rebuilding broken bonds in your hair. Best strategy is to do a bond repair treatment 1-2 times a week alongside your regular products. I don't think comparing these 2 lines makes sense as they have a different function in your routine.

Yes, the Redken packaging is much nicer, and yes, the Redken products "feel" and smell better, but if you're in it for the bonding, you shouldn't care. The 20% leave-in mask is my favourite in the whole Elvive line.

I've been using the L'oreal system for about a month it is making a HUGE difference in my hair. I'm in the process of growing my natural out. I have about 3 inches of old, dry, bleached hair at the bottom and it now holds a curl after washing. I legit feel reborn.

If you watch Lab Muffin, she has a Ph.d in chemistry and is a cosmetic chemist you will learn the percentage of an active ingredient is not telling as to how it performs. Formulation is everything. Pretreatment is called a pretreatment for a reason, to be used before you flood your hair cuticles with water. You are missing the point of these products. Redkin is strong enough to bond to hair through any oil or dirt, no worries. DO NOT FLOOD YOUR HAIR WITH WATER AND THEN APPLY A PRETREATMENT. THESE ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR THIS AND YOU WILL BE DUMPING MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN. It is nothing new for a company to make products targeted for different market share and price points. L'Oreal is owned by ESTEE LAUDER.

I'm glad you did this video! 😀I was just eyeing the Elvive bond repair the other day and thinking if it was some sort of dupe 👀... L'Oreal did a similar thing with Kérastase Extentioniste-line, where they created similar dupes for both Redken (extreme length) and Elvital/Elvive (Full Resist). I also find the whole citric acid hype a bit funny. Like, Garnier Fructis was on it waaay back! 😅 Looking at the surfactants used 🤔out of the three shampoos, L'Oreal Elvive should be the most clarifying one. Sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate is what makes it easily foam up and is used in many "sulfate-free" clarifying shampoos. As well as having cocamide betaine, which is another more clarifying surfactant. So I'm a bit surprised that you say that it didn't feel deep cleansing, especially when it had the lighter texture of them all. But know that both of those are able to break down silicones.

I personally agree with you. I would use a Clarifying shampoo to cleanse everything, then probably skip to the conditioners. I think alot of shampoos are there for people who are creatures of habit and want a matching shampoo, when truth be told, it's just going to be washed out anyways. A shampoos job is supposed to be for cleaning off build up.

I used Redken hair care products and makeup when I was modeling back in the 1970s. However, the products were only available through my agency so for a couple of decades I used other products. Then, in the early 1990s, I learned that L'Oreal had bought Redken and renamed the makeup line L'Oreal Paris. L'Oreal Paris later on launched a haircare line and has expanded that line over the years. Therefore, L'Oreal Paris is Redken, but in a different packaging.

And the Garnier Fructis has 15% - almost the exact same ingredients in the same order. Also owner by L’Oreal. It’s actually quite common for the big umbrella brands to have their higher end lines roll out a product / new ingredient and then slowly have it move through their other lower priced brands, since they own the patents. They will be packaged differently and each will target different market segments. So the Redkin is the high end, will have the highest % of actives and better non-actives.

I just returned the Omniplex because it was too expensive and the bottle was ridiculous small. I'm actually now using the pre-shampoo brand (Bond Bar)from Sally's Beauty Supply, but with Loreal Elvive Hydrating shampoo & conditioner. My hair was getting horribly dry, brittle and very tangeled because of my pre-menopausal hormone issues, and especially with those shampoos & conditioners that don't have any sulfates & silicones. My hair, after getting it highlighted needed some TLC, so my go-to is the Bond Bar pre-shampoo (leave it on for 12 minutes with a plastic shower cap), then shampoo and condition. Leave the conditioner on for at least five minutes too. You'd be shocked at how much this has helped. I can now run a comb through my hair with ease and I have extremely thick, shoulder-length hair.

Just bought the Everpure Bond Strengthening shampoo and conditioner today, before I saw your video. I have fine, highlighted, and very long hair. I loved the way it smelled, and I’m letting my hair air dry, so I’ll have to wait to see how it looks. But it felt soft and very easy to comb after my shower. I’ll probably stick to the dupes because, even though I really like Redken, I’m tired of the price.

It’s actually very reasonable that L’Oréal went with dupe for their own products. Let’s consider haircare business as a cake. Redken is a professional brand, which holds the % of hair professional market + online stores. L’Oréal is a drugstore brand which owns % of home haircare products. And we have two types of clients: these which buys pro and high ends and these who can only afford drugstores. Creating the lines for drugstores L’Oréal prevents other brands to do so before them and takes huge piece of cake of the drugstore clients. Otherwise drugstore clients will find a dupe elsewhere from other small (cheaper) company. Now they can buy L’Oréal which is everywhere and the company has either Redken fans and dupe searchers in their client base. Double win.🎉

If your hair is not behaving as it normally does, it may be you are using the Redken products, they tend to weigh your hair down. Use your regular shampoos to remove that buildup(?) and your hair will be back to normal. I think these shampoos should only be used when your hair is very damaged and in need of repair. Otherwise, you are just overloading it.

no, it's actually a really good strategy from a marketing/sales POV, you have the market for the people who can afford the higher quality ingredients and higher concentrations + lots more marketing (like the publicity yes, but also, packaging, shipping, etc) AND they also have the market for the people who want good results but either can't afford the higher end product or just don't want to spend that much money and don't care to have lower concentrations or a dupe ingredient that will do the job too but probably won't be as fast or as impactful sorta, they have the money coming from all places

So I have tried the Redken line and the L’Oréal Ever pure. I do agree on the shampoo that I get a better wash with the Redken. The L’Oréal I am greasy after day 2, which stinks. I know you like to but you actually aren't suppose to emulsify your shampoo before applying it. It will work better to.dissolve oils if you don't, at.least not on your forst wash. The "lather" is.suppose to tell you when your hair is clean. If you notice your first washing it doesn't lather very much. The secondnit does. The lather is a sign that the shampoo isn't picking up oils anymore and your scalp/hair is clean. When you rub your hands together you're compromising the process.

This is a good one. Reminds me of your older more science based videos. I’ve been watching you for years and I fell in love with your drive to do the research into the science and your ability to explain it so well. Your advice has definitely helped improved the health of my hair. BUT I feel like more recently you’re doing a lot more brand peddling than anything else. Your channel feels more like every other influencer that just pushes brands on us. In my efforts to prep for the summer, I had to go back 1-2 years to find science based helpful videos. Also, doing that I noticed in the last year, you aren’t bleaching your hair as much as you used to. I don’t feel like you talk about that much. I remember you mentioning it once but that’s it. Just not using as much bleach can do wonders for the health of your hair so how do we know if these products have actually helped you or if it’s just you not using as much bleach? I feel like I’ve lost some of the trust I had in your advice more recently. Please know I love how down to earth you seem to be and the helpful info you started out giving. Make that money girl, but just please don’t get lost in the “money machine” of it all and water down the quality you started out with! Thank you for all you do!

Abbey has a whole video about her hair color. If it's only been a year or 2 since she's not bleaching, her ends are obviously still bleached because her hair is longer than a couple of years of growth. Also, she is now in school to become a Trichologist so your criticism about science-based opinions doesn't make sense. She's not sponsored by any brands so there's no reason for her to push a brand??
