It's kind of fitting that when the story takes a turn from now to basically until the end, we get a completely new and different intro. Instead of the mostly subdued colors and purposeful instrumentals, we get this explosion of color, weirdness and metal that catches you completely by surprise when you first watch it.

Great anime. When I was watching, something I didn't like at first but came to appreciate is how there will be several episodes in a row that are removed from Tenma and Johan. Spoilers/theory for those who seen the entire show. . . . . . . . L STILL suspects Light is Kira and Misa is Second Kira, just like Light explains after L says he could surpass him. But this was a double trap; for better or worse, Light DID find the group that was improving their company using Kira's power and managed to get a mole in the organization faster and more efficently than L was able to do without any loss of life as "solid evidence." Knowing this, it was at this moment L suspected that it was entirely possible for Light/Kira to defeat him, so asked him to take over as L in case he died, but without telling him about the organization that raised Near and Mello. Here and now, months before L was killed and Light took over, he was setting up for his true successors to have a better chance to take Light down.

It doesn't matter because Light still should have won the ending is scientifically impossible and is full of plot holes plus was forcibly continued in the manga past Ls death so it should have never happened. It's impossible for Giovanni to have copied all the notebook in a single night and it also makes no sense how Mikami didn't figure it out considering he checked the notebook with a microscope. Also Light didn't have a backup plan? Idc if you say it was his ego that's just out of character he could have easily given a slip of paper earlier to Mikami just in case. The only thing that makes it remotely make sense is if Near used the death note like Matsuda said and controlled Mikami before death because he knew there was no other way to beat Light but even then it still leaves numerous other problems. In conclusion Light is the GOAT and the ending is mid Lights laugh is the most memorable moment of it. Ratio + L + That's right I Win + all according to plan

More reasons why L and Light are different sides of the same coin: - L is okay with killing criminals in order to catch Kira (even though they were already sentenced to death, there is a big difference between killing a lethal injection and being used as a bait to a serial killer while being broadcasted to millions of people, besides death penalty has moral issues in its own concept). - Light is fine with killing criminals in order to reduce crime and make the world more safe (also many of the criminals he kills are also already convicted and in the death row). - L is fine with basically killing innocent people by knowing they are going to die and letting it happen so he can get the actual Kira, because in his mind, the deaths of a few innocent people are a lesser evil compared to the possibility of Kira keeping on with his killings. - Light is fine with killing innocent people who are trying to catch him and trying to stop the creation of a safer world, because in his mind a few deaths of innocent people are a lesser evil than the thousands of lives that would be taken if Kira was not able to create that better world.

A lot of people mention the switch in Light’s personality as showing how the death note affects him, almost like the death note cursed him in some way. But I don’t think that is the case. I think it’s more so because of Light’s narcissism than anything else. He is so against other people killing people because he can only justify it when he himself is killing others. He sees himself as a God and he is the only one who is entitled to pass judgment onto others. This is why he is so against Kira when he doesn’t think it’s him.

When L said that Misa and Light were the best couple, he obviously lied because it was clear they couldn't be a couple. Misa was happy to hear that, as if she was waiting for someone to confirm her fantasies. She lives in a dream and can't get out of it, she would be very depressed if she tried and might not make it. Where L and Light are is very strange to her, this environment, this case and generally. She is the kind of person who wants to jump on clouds and dream of a prince. She is ready even to die for spontaneous love, she believes with all her heart that one day she will deserve his attention. she is blind to everything else, she does not care about the world and people, she has only light. she lives in rose-colored glasses, but she hardly participates, she is a random girl, who got a notebook and had to stay under the supervision. Misa, Light and L have never had anything in common. Neither friendship, nor love, nor intimacy, nor any other pleasant feelings. It is ironic to watch them jumping holding hands and lying to each other's faces (because they are still ruthless enemies).Even though they have their own goals, this scene is so naive, soft and light, and so sad at the same time. At one point they are united by something human, because they are all hostages to this situation, this accident.No one is to blame for what happened, and they all meant well, just in different ways. In many people this scene brings a smile on their face and naive warmth, and then comes the realization that they can not be together (in a sense, they are dangerous to be together).It shows that they are still children at heart they are playing, but this case has forced them to play a cruel game with major losses. This shows that they can all be good and pure children and deities in this circle. And Misa saw in him a man not as people talk about him, not a killer, not a monster, but a kindness.That strong people like L are not only evil but also kind in equal measure .It's funny that L has deecedately earned the attention of a woman and her kiss more than probably 95% of the entire planet .Even though he lied, she took it as truth, it was meant to be. L understood that she wanted to believe it and he had nothing to do but tell this sweet lie and make her happy, to give her what she wanted.He knew she couldn't bear the truth, so it was a noble gesture on his part. It's a very beautiful and deep symbolism to me and I saw it even if it wasn't there. Here they have no anger towards each other, but they are completely different, they have something human, something deep. They are united by dreams, desires, hope - all human qualities. . no matter how far apart they are, they look into each other's eyes, and they are open in this scene.It is as if at that moment they had forgotten that they were enemies.You can feel their mood, I do not know how to describe it, but it changed dramatically at that moment, even L made a joke (so...and this is serious 🤔) This scene is very light, naive, serene and floating, it releases from the truth for a few seconds, from the hard and harrowing truth. It shows that in the world people sometimes want to believe in lies, even the smartest and unbelievably strong people. Here they turn into carefree children and broadcast it to the viewer.

Re: possible moral uses of the Death Note - I could see one, and ironically, we've seen Light do so : namely, his first two uses. He used the Death Note as a weapon, in the *immediate* defense of others (respectively, the hostages and the woman). I consider that use of the Death Note no less and no more moral/immoral than using any other weapon in the same situation.

A little detail I'm interested in from this episode... The question Light asks "Ryuuzaki" isn't just "do you really think I'm Kira". It's specifically "do you really think I could become a murderer?" He's asking if L seriously believes that he, Light Yagami, could ever take another human life, and he asks this looking him straight in the eye. L looks right back. He's looks not only at the theoretical "Kira Light", but at THIS Light right this moment, who is as if he'd never been Kira... and says, yes, he does think Light Yagami has the potential to be a murderer. Light seems to be a more "moral" person without his memories of being Kira... but that's because being "moral" is "right." And from the start, Light was someone who *had* to be right. And if he ever did anything "wrong," he *had* to convince himself it was actually "right," that he was still "moral." His self-principles didn't fade away by his being a serial killer, they *caused* his doubling down on that. And L can still see that.

Curious how someone can be adamantly against killing, but in the same breath be so apathetic towards someone whom in a sense is only responding to a situation he's been in his whole life. Light's father works as dangerous of a job as law enforcement. He observes his father work case after case, yet nothing changes. Some criminals are penalized through the proper channels, but most get away. Or they are let off the hook and only double down on their criminality as a result. Despite all the naivete, hopes, dreams, and aspirations. The reality is that despite all of that the malevolent acts of many are just as native to humanity as benevolence. Ultimately, seeing someone like Light as purely evil is so off the mark it hurts. You're given enough context to know why Light does what he does. Being as smart as Light also heavily plays into why as well, and him being very ambitious. A bit more of a niche topic depending on where you're standing. But Japan, where Light is from, is a house of cards so to speak. People who don't ultimately "fit in" are made to be outcasts. Even if they are only human and have very real and human problems. You have to suck it up in a society like that though, or else you're left behind. That also works in reverse where with Light there is a latent insanity and even a depravity. So when you've been drinking the cool aid for so long there's also a part of you that wants to express all the things that you've denied yourself because of societal expectations. The subsequent release of such desires ends up being more extreme because of said repression. Death Note is a narrative about the human condition. About the lengths one is willing to go to see their ideals and dreams come to fruition. Like Light, and even L. Sorry for the brief condesention and the lengthy comment. I'm just really passionate about this story. Even if it's "just an anime" the issues and quandries it touches upon are worth lengthy discussion. As well as the ost for this anime because my god is it good. Thank you for reading, if anyone has.

Since you are asking for recommendations, I suggest you to watch "Steins;Gate". The anime may start slow and confusing , however as it goes farther, it becomes more and more intriguing and exciting. Lucky for you, it also has one of the best anime dubs I've ever heard (main character is voiced by the actor, who voiced Erwin Smith, and he plays his role so well, I didn't actually recognize him!)

After Death Note, I think you two should watch Eureka Seven. It’s a deeply underrated show that doesn’t get much in the way of reaction series, but I believe you two would greatly enjoy it, and it’s by far one of my favorites. Right up there with Brotherhood and Avatar/Korra. The English dub is also fantastic. (There are several spin-off series and movies; what you’d be looking for is the 2005 series of 50 or so episodes. The full title in Japan is Psalms of Planets: Eureka seveN.)

Someone could easily make an argument that using a supernatural weapon with implications like the user usually ending up cursed (or worse if the fake rules are still on there) arguing from on high with all the information, you could still say it’s supernatural / impersonal and not carrying that burden is worse than forcing someone to use traditional weapons. Either way, everything is subjective if you’re smart enough. But some of us are L, some of us aren’t.

I HIGHLY suggest you watch Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Its ten 20 min episodes, so it's not a big time commitement, but it is soooo worth a watch.
