But to be honest, I want them to get back on track before they move on to do all of that. And if they loose this market, someone else will hopefully step up their game and deliver us from games like Three Kingdoms and Troy who while certainly not bad, were far from the quality I had hoped the series would have by now and arguably some of the weakest titles in the series. Like, even thrones had animations. Remember those? Man, I just want another good historical total war... Swedish kings have a history of badassery, fighting where the battle is thickest, especially Charles XII.
@papazoulou93265 жыл бұрын
I took a course on the battle of Lützen and if I may, I'll add some things to the video: We are not really sure how Gustavus Adolphus died, some versions (like the first french report of the battle) argue that Gustavus was indeed shot a first time by an imperial soldier (suspected at the time to be Pappenheim himself) and another by an imperial soldier while he was trying to get out of the melee. Nowadays, we still are pretty unsure, as it could also have been a random swedish soldier who shot the king in the middle of the gunpowder smoke. Concerning the retreat of Wallenstein, he did receive some reinforcements (around 5000 men) near the end of the battle, wich could have allowed him to rout the swedish army. However, he convinced himself that a 15 000 strong army under the command of the elector of Saxony was coming to reinforce the swedes and allies and turn the tide of the battle. Do note that he was also himself nearly killed or captured during the very long battle, so it's pretty easy to understand how this idea went to his head.
@juanmantecon21954 жыл бұрын
Well, that explains Wallenstein's retreat, save the remains of his army and fight another day...

You didn't really add anything. Just a bunch of "could haves".
@papazoulou93264 жыл бұрын
Well yeah, because we aren't actually sure how Gustavus Adolphus died. I would rather submit a number of hypothesis rather than say, "yeah that's exactly how he died". One of the first reports on Gustavus Adolphus death was that he was shot by Pappenheim himself. Like, working on the sources is the first thing you do when studying to become a historian. I added some precisions to the vid.

According to one source, Bernhard had goaded his troops into battle with the rallying cry of "Swedes, they have killed the king." This drove his men into such a frenzy (remember that these were descendants of Vikings, after all), that later, Imperial troops were found to have been strangled.

Lutzen was a costly battle for the Swedes, including Gustavus Adolphus. Although they won the field, the Swedish cause wavered after the king was dead and the continuation of Swedish involvement appeared in doubt.

I honestly never learned much about the Thirty Years' War. I had also never heard the term, "Magdeburg's Quarter," but I gathered from tone and brief context that it wasn't good. A simple wikipedia search of it reveals the tragic truth. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Great video, brilliant series! There are two slightly confusing errors though. Around 5:33, the year indicated next to "Rain" is 1623, and it should probably be 1632. In previous videos, protestants were brown and catholics were green, and now it is the other way around. Keep up the good work, and thanks a lot!

Ooh I played this battle in the "pike and shot" game, I massed my infantry in the centre, some cavalry and skirmishers on my right to protect the flank, and mass cavalry on the left flank. Overwhelmed their right flank, held off their left flank and broke through their centre.

Austria is integral to Germany's history and the only reason it did not become part of Germany (when it first united) was because it had its own empire and was too powerful.

Most of thé battles took place in Germany some part Lost 70 % of ppl !!! Old Germany could Say ""hold my Beer ''
@fischkopp12345 жыл бұрын
@@DidierDidier-kc4nm No, WW2 alone caused more deaths in Germany than the 30 Years War, but it was the biggest reason for future attempts to create a unified country to properly oppose all other nation states around the empire, so you could say that because of this war we get the second empire in the 1870s, which unified most of the german-speaking areas of Europe.
@ned15935 жыл бұрын
@@fischkopp1234 WW2 caused more deaths because of Germany's higher population in the 20th century. If you go for the proportion of victims, this war was deadlier. There were no German unification attempts before the time of Napoleon. You could say the Thirty Years War was the biggest catastrophe in German history before Hitler.
@olavtryggvason11944 жыл бұрын
To all people who can read German I recommend the novels tof the eyewitness Grimmelshausen, who described his own experiences from the war inn literal form. He wrote three novels about the war. The longest and most famous among them is the novel "Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus", published in 1668 20 years after the peace treaty. His German is difficult to read for non-natives. He used a baroque German, which differs from modern everyday German like Shakespeare's English differs from modern English. But fpr all readers who are ready to overcome these linguistic obstacles it is an excellent first-hand reading.
