Sipho Mthiyane the old regime was beyond evil. If you didn't see or witness inough like me. WATCH...( TRC ) And thats not even the beginning of it. My grandfather experianced it , because it was the end of Hitler's regime, and reborn in South Africa, In 1960's was my FATHER'S turn to taste it. At the and 0f 70's it was our turn . In 1993 before and after Chris Hani's death it was unbearable. The regime turned ( SOUTH AFRICANS ) against each other. Helling them to kill each other in the townships, just to prevent them to share what they forcefully took. I think you are the same age as my daughter and bit older than my grand kid. I have scars emotionally and physically from it. This speech you saw is BS.

To those who praise this speech, understand that these were not true reforms; his actions were simply a strategy to gain Western support and preserve apartheid. At that time, the global community was calling for an end to apartheid through sanctions and boycotts.
@breathe7512 жыл бұрын
The notion of orderly reform in his speech was in reality a system of a three chamber parlement. On top were the white chamber, then Coloureds and Asians and then Blacks, each segregated with their own voting rights. PW believed this was the solution for South Africa. However this had its limitations as well as the groups did not have equal rights and the same access to resources. He opted for a future where the white minority would hold on to military power to uphold order in order to "negotiate" a future for whites in a new South Africa. He did not trust the left who seemed, in his words, to hide behind talks of "pious morals." His biggest fear was that South Africa would be left in the hands of the typical corrupt African Dictator which was a common leadership theme in post colonial Africa.

South Africa is in the horrible state it is in because this was not dealt with under Smuts. the 1927 race laws were a fatal mistake. What should have been done instead would to have been building bridges so that unsegregated political parties might arise, instead of having something like Malan's white National Party which could never hope to build a national consensus that could have made South Africa an example to the world, and a very prosperous one at that. Instead Blacks were left as 4th class citizens, or rather, subjects , who were driven to more radical parties, which were either tribally based like Inkatha or Marxist, like the ANC. The sheer numbers would one day ensure that the corrupt, incompetent Marxist ANC would come to power, and utterly destroy the country from an economic and law and order standpoint. At this point, the best we can hope for is that enough people will get behind a multiracial party like Democratic Alliance and do what should have been done from the start. Credit where due, the transition of power back in 1994 was peaceful and Mandela did work to try and promote reconciliation rather than reprisals. However he did miss an opportunity to protect the country's economy, which would have benefitted all, . I think that there should have been a National Unity government consisting of leadership from ANC, Inkatha and New National for the first 10 years with Mandela and De Klerk, and Buthelezi sharing power. Perhaps on a rotating basis, as has been done in Israel. It would have , I believe conveyed a message of goodwill and stability, and helped the economy and reconciliation to the point where economic and social damage (as well as the rise of EFF)might have been avoided, and kept radicals on all sides in check.

Botha was an exceptionally incompetent and unintelligent leader. Up until the early 80s, the economy was booming and the ANC was nothing more than a faxing machine in Dar-es-Salam, a virtual non-entity like the Taliban today. Going from there, he could have comfortably reformed or done away with Apartheid altogether without ever talking to any of these marxist terrs.
