When T. Rex returned to Top of the Pops with the Electric Warrior cut 'Get It On (Bang a Gong)' in 1971, John was invited to mime the song's piano parts. John was one month removed from the release of Madman Across the Water and was a rising figure in rock music at the time.

Elton was a session musician before he had his breakthrough. He played piano on the Hollies “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.” You need to listen to T Rex’s “20th Century Boy”.

I was fortunate enough to see the original Tyrannosaurus Rex duo of Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrine Took in a small Glasgow club called The Lindella in 1968 . There was probably around 100 or so people there sitting around on the floor watching these amazing and unique musicians do a selection of songs from their only album at that time with the title My People Were Fair and had Sky in Their Hair…But Now they’re Content to Wear Stars on their Brows . Who would have guessed that this little hippy , sat on a makeshift stage , would go on to become a major Rock Star and British Sex Symbol ? Marc Bolan RIP

"Get It On" hit #1 in the UK on July 24, 1971, giving T. Rex their second chart-topper there, following the classic "Hot Love." However, the band's American record company, Reprise, didn't release the newly-titled "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" until January 1972. It unfortunately ended up being the group's only significant hit in the US, going to #10 in March. Back in the UK, they had two more classic chart toppers - "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru" - and a total of 11 Top 10 hits. A band really worth checking out further. RIP Marc Bolan. Gone way too soon.

Pretty sure I saw this; it was a Thursday night. Recognised the multi-coloured light flare.. Nice! Lots of killer T-Rex tracks out there; they specialised in singles releases (for a long time tried to avoid releasing an album, needed so so many good tracks - and the competition was insane; just try go up against established album bands back in the day, esp. head-to-head vs The Beatles back catalogue). Also remember hearing in school must have been about a year later Marc had died in a car crash :( so sad, would have had lots more great music from them.

You could just play their early 70s U.K. hits in chronological order - Ride a White Swan, Hot Love, Jeepster, Telegram Sam, Metal Guru, Children of the Revolution, Solid Gold Easy Action and 20th Century Boy. Because of Marc Bolan's androgynous good looks the group was massive with "teeny boppers" and to this day some people don't take them seriously. I'd love to see you react to The Power Station (a minor supergroup with members of Duran Duran and Robert Palmer on lead vocals) performing their cover of this song. This is one case where I love the original, and I find the cover to be a very interesting take on that song.

I love T Rex original beyond reason, but the Power Station did it justice. I'm not usually a fan of covers, but selective covers I do like, and that's one of them. Also like The Killers' version of Go All the Way!

@@blanetalk You're welcome! Let me know if you do. I first heard it at the end of the Dark Shadows movie with Johnny Depp, and at first wasn't sure if I was okay with them having done it lol! I listened again when I got home from the movies and accepted the fact I liked it lol! I can't help but like Brandon Flowers vocals, and the rest of the band's work, of course. :)

@@lauraallen55 - Just listened to it. ❤ it's a very respectful cover, and of course I like Brandon's vocals. Yep, that's a great cover. Also, I now understand how I never encountered it before. I grew up watching Dark Shadows (the serious Gothic horror afternoon soap series) faithfully in the 1970's with my mom every weekday for years. We also watched the two theatrical movies with the same cast. I'd been waiting for someone to do a modern update movie or TV series, when I found out that Tim Burton was turning it into a spoof. Well, I was heartbroken, so I refused to watch it. And because it had a midling performance in its box office run, it kinda killed the IP for any serious revival for a long time to come. So it makes me a bit sad. But, great song cover! Thanks for sharing!

@@blanetalk I missed out watching DS series when it happened (as I wasn't around yet lol!), but someone turned me on to it long after the fact, and I watched the entire series on Peacock I think it was. Actually, I re-watched it there because I had previously seen a lot of it on videos or DVDs, one, and I think some of it was missing or something, not sure. I absolutely fell in love with it! So, although I didn't see it originally, I did see it all before the re-make of the movie. I also watched a few of the original movies - House of Dark Shadows was one, I believe? In any case, I tried to accept the Johnny Depp one for what it was, and did enjoy it for that... putting aside my initial horror at what had been done to it lol! Bonus was getting to hear the cover of Go All the Way. Glad to hear you liked it too :)

T Rex predated the term Glam Rock by a few years. I always think of the N.Y. Dolls that I couldn't listen to when I hear that term. Back then we were called lascivious hippies because we wore platform shoes and clean clothes. Lol. I tried it for about a year before I became an earth dude and started growing my own. Powerstation with Robert Palmer has a kick ass version of this song thats worth a listen.

Marc Bolan was 20 years ahead of his time unfortunately he died on his 29 birthday in a car accident Marc's girlfriend Gloria Jones was driving but she was injured in the accident. Gloria Jones was a keyboardist and vocalist for T-Rex 😮

'Live' ha! Top of the Pops contantly flip-flopped between live performances, live vocals with a pre-recorded backing track and full-on miming to the record (this was definitely the latter), but it was billed as 'live' because the band were 'performing' live in the studio. It was not broadcast live. 😆 ETA: Maybe give 'Children of the Revolution' as listen, that's my favourite T-Rex track, and I have impeccable taste.

Lip synching to the studio track. The "female" backup singers on the recording were Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan.
