Even though the video quality wasnt the best, the sheer talent and musical badassery shined through all of it. This was amazing. Sorry for spacing out half way through, I had some really weird shit happen to me while recording. I won't mention it here but yeah, very strange.

Had friend in a band who was gigging in south in 70s who had old woman approach them in a restaurant and asked them “are you boys The Rolling Stones?” They said yes and gave her autograph with Brothers names. I am about 100 sure I met Duane when I was 12. This guy who looked like no one looked at the time, started talking to me who was looking at a guitar in a store. He told me his band was playing in Gaslight Square in St Louis. Told me about the Vox amps they had in his southern drawl. Years later, after hearing Allmans and Derek and the Dominos, I dug into Duane and his past. Saw photo, and read history. Turns out the time and places matched the guy I met years earlier and the photo from that time hit me hard and gave me chills.

The two drummer thing: I saw something amazing at a Joe Walsh concert at the Santa Barbara bowl in the early 1980s - as usual, Mr. Walsh had two drummers with him on stage with two full drum sets - as they were playing from OPPOSITE sides of the stage, they (Joe Vitale, his normal drummer and another guy) threw their drumsticks across the stage like jugglers with bowling pins, each while playing the song flawlessly! They did this for the ENTIRE song! I couldn't believe it, so I took my camera to the stage and photographed it - got the pictures back, and it was real! Too much!

IMHO Duane’s guitar solo in the Fillmore East live album version of this song is arguably the greatest solo. I recommend the studio version of Whipping Post next if you haven’t reacted to it yet. They have many great songs, including One Way Out and Statesboro Blues. I think their version of Stormy Monday (live Fillmore East album), is one of the greatest blues song of all time. The other great guitar player in this band, Dickey Betts, wrote the song Elizabeth Reed.

Eric Clapton, a guitar player of some repute, said that it had only happened a few times in his life, when he heard a song on the radio and he immediately pulled his car over to find out who the guitar player was. It happened with Jimi Hendrix, It happened with Duane Allman and it happened with Stevie Ray Vaughn. As someone else mentioned, Duane Allman later played with Clapton when the Layla sessions were recorded. Duane played slide guitar on that tune, as no one else could ... with the possible exception of Derek Trucks (whose uncle Butch Trucks was a founding member and drummer of The Allman Brothers Band). Derek, himself, was later a member of The Allman Brothers Band and is a sublime slide guitar player in his own right.

Allman Brothers band was like a perfect rock/ blues orchestra. The deluxe version of live at the Fillmore includes Mountain Jam which didn't appear on the original version, it appears later on Eat a Peach. Tom Dowd, engineer extraordinaire spliced two recorded versions of IMOER that provided the best possible version of it live. I believe the first section features Duane and the second section features Dickie. It is an awesome tune regardless of what one you're listening to.👍👍👍👍

This was part of a PBS special filmed 9/23/1970 at the Fillmore East. You can see other footage from this night from different bands on youtube. The quality is much better for them because it was produced and polished for the special. The Allman Brothers were left out because some doofus forgot to plug Gregg Allman's mike in until halfway through the performance. (The control board or something.. the audience could hear him just fine). All we have is the raw footage. So what should have been their big break didn't happen and they had to wait another year or two to get big. Duane Allman was royally pissed after the fact when he found out.

Stunned you hadn't noticed Gregg Allman on keys, guess you were preoccupied with the twin drummers, Jai Johnny Johanson and Butch Trucks, uncle of acclaimed slide guitarist Derek. To hear Duane Allman's (who soloed second) signature slide guitar song, hear him on "Statesboro Blues". Some of his signature licks from that song are widely copied. I hope you also check out the later band lineup with Derek Trucks (nephew of the drummer Butch) and Warren Haynes on guitars (like on the 2003 Beacon Theatre DVD). Derek played many of Duane's slide guitar parts in their old material. Duane also played on Eric Clapton's "Derek And The Dominos" album, so Derek Trucks toured with Clapton, and they played some of the material from that album, with Derek playing Duane Allman's parts.
