Jeff Healey is Canadian and he is blind. He lost his eyesight to cancer when he was around a year old. His father gave him a guitar when he was three and because he was so little he couldn't reach the strings so he put it on his lap and he became comfortable playing it that way. He became friends with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Unfortunately the cancer came back and he passed when he was in his forties. Brilliant guitarist!

Sadly, we need to use the past tense, as Jeff Healey died from lung cancer at age 41 in 2008. Obviously cancer was a terrible scourge to his family. RIP

Terrific reaction to one of Canada's greatest for sure. This isn't the Jeff Healey Band though, this is Jeff with a bit of a star-studded lineup, with Marcus Miller on the bass, the legendary Dr. John on piano and Omar Hakim on drums. This was a one-off TV gig, but they all cook like hell here for sure. Great choice - peace and love from Canada ☮

Who you saw in the video are Jeff Healey, Marcus MIller (Bass), Omar Hakim (Drums), Dr. John (Keys). Four absolute monster players there. Marcus Miller and Omar are big jazz musicians. Dr. John, look him up, great music from him. Not to mention, David Sanborn was the person introducing Jeff. I used to watch this show in the late 80s (I think it was on Sunday nights) and they would have big name people on every show. Look up Night Music videos on KZbin.

This weekly show in the 1980s was hosted by sax player David Sanborn. Jeff just used David's backup band for this appearance. Marcus Miller was a fairly famous bassist back in the day. And on drums Hakim something or other.

Born in Toronto, Ontario,Healey was raised in the city's west end. He was adopted as an infant; his adoptive father was a firefighter. When he was almost one year old, Healey lost his sight due to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes. His eyes had to be surgically removed, and he was given ocular prostheses.

He sings like Jimi Hendrix and plays kinda like him, too. Music is color blind and that's what's so cosmic about it. Marcus Miller is outstanding. One of my favorite people full stop. His work with Miles Davis is iconic. His work with the Metropole Orkestra at the 2013 Edison Jazz World Awards was jaw dropping. Oops. Sort of veered off of Jeff a bit. He is incredible, truly.

Cool to see you doing Jeff. To the day I die, he will be my Dating Game answer for favourite musician ever. Changed the way I listened to music and expanded my listening genre. I used to hate blues. I cried when he passed. Additionally, Jeff was house musician in the original movie Roadhouse with his main bandmates. You can find a great upbeat song ‘When the night Comes Falling’ from the movie which comes with some great guitar solos. Also as an aside, if you haven’t checked them out yet, if you want a real jaw dropper, check out Walk off the Earth and a video they made years ago covering Outkast’s “Hey Ya”. Toronto Canada has produced some greats.

That was a treat. Jeff Healey deserves to be known and recognized as one of the greats. I've seen two other blind guitarists who play lap-style like that and it does make sense since you can play with all five fingers. Playing with one's teeth ("tooth picking"?) is a Blues thing that goes back to street musicians of the '30s. Jimi re-introduced it. One of the things that I enjoy about this channel is how musicians that I've been digging for decades are new to our host. Might I suggest checking out that "Ragtime Dandy" - Dr. John. In his early Voodoo period he recorded a song called "Walk On Gilded Splinters" that you might enjoy. Humble Pie also do long jam live version of it.
