No offense meant, but your voice sounds like a cross between Michael Jackson and Beast Boy from Teen Titans. Very detailed and well produced video. Do the plugs need to be replaced as "routine" or only if you start experiencing misses or trouble codes? -My 2015 Sienna has about 140,000 miles, still gets 25-30 mpg on hwy, and runs like a top. Went for an oil change(wife insists having it done at dealership even though I change it on my truck) and the service rep tried to sell me the plug replacement and fuel system cleaning right off the bat based on mileage alone.😠 I declined, then they came up with, "You have an oil leak either from main seal or valve covers, we can check that out..." I said, "Just the oil and filter please." As far as checking dipstick, the engine uses ZERO oil and not even a drop has appeared on my driveway. Pulled the engine cover and there seems to be a tiny bit of weeping around the cover, but not enough to make any run past the edge. Would possibly re-torquing those bolts even be worth it, or should I replace the gaskets, or just leave it alone? Great channel. Subscribing.

@@williamgaines9784 Well, I wish I could dance like Michael Jackson! (But I have no idea what Teen Titans is) Yes, spark plug changes are considered routine maintenance, and the service interval for the 2GR-Fe spark plugs is 120K miles. That said, I suspect that many Siennas (and other Toyotas with the 2GR-FE engine) have their original plugs at high mileage simply because of the cost of a spark plug change. It may well be that many people wait till they get a misfire code, perhaps due to a failing igniter or oil on a plug from a failing valve cover gasket, etc, then the owners respond with new plugs, igniters, valve cover gaskets, etc at that time. The benefits of replacing the spark plugs are mainly increased fuel economy, cleaner/smoother idle, and greater responsiveness. Also, at least having a look at the spark plugs can give you an idea of something that might be going wrong, especially fuel-wise, which might not trip a check engine light but still needs to be addressed. As for the oil leak: I would try to determine exactly where the oil is coming from, to be sure that it is not oil accumulating on or near the valve cover from another place. So, I'd clean up the area, then check it after a drive and while idling. Replacing the Bank 1 valve cover (the rear head) is a big job which requires all the steps shown in the video, plus removal of a few more parts and the valve cover itself in that cramped area (so if you do that job, you might as well change the spark plugs while you're back there). The front valve cover is much easier, so hopefully that's where the leak is, if there is one! If you don't have ramps, maybe pick some up and have a look yourself from underneath. Even a small oil leak will make a mess: if you don't see a mess, and you're not losing oil, then maybe the service manager wasn't being honest. I hope that helps -- good luck!

This may very well be the most comprehensive and complete videos I have ever seen. As a former Toyota mechanic I have viewed hundreds of videos here on KZbin, many of which go from bad to worse. Your video is on par with something I would expect to see published by Toyota and Lexus for their instructional packages. Excellent work, you should be very proud of what you have created here.

Without question the best DIY video I have ever watched. And I just happened to buy a 2013 Sienna... which was great timing as my GV80 was just flatbedded to the dealership.... again. They do give me loaners. Bought the Sienna to drag my kiddo friends around. Because of course....if buy the top tier GV80.... doesn't come with a 3rd row.

I can't afford to take my vehicles to the dealer/shop and do 90% of the repair work that I have the tools for. I won't tackle anything that might cause damage or where I might get stuck. To that end, I watch far too many KZbin videos, mostly because I can't completely follow what is going on or too much gets edited out for my level of comfort. I was on the fence about taking on this job with so many components and hoses involved, but L35 covered every single step far beyond what most were willing to. Can't thank you enough!!

Thanks for posting this video. I've done this method as well as the method where the air filter is removed. This one seemed more straightforward. I removee the 2 bolts and a nut that held the rear coil harness and had plenty of slack to avoid removing the clips to the coils. I only removed the rear bolt to that difficult bracket and had no trouble removing or replacing the top of the intake. It took me about 3 hours start to finish.

Your attention to detail from all your videos leaves me speechless time after time. You should be teaching these modern day mechanics on how a car repair should be all about..! This 2GR-FE video reminds me of my 3MZ-FE nightmare. Both have the same horrible impossible-to-reach cylinder 1,3,5 and that black intake plenum must be removed to access. During my 3MZ-FE drama, the air flow sensor big pipe was broken and need to buy from Lexus dealer for $$$. Not sure if it's worth consideration: while you are in cylinder 1,3,5, you might as well replacing the coils with brand new ones even if they are not giving trouble b/c with all the vibration during this process, coil 1,3,5 may go out next week or month. It's like extra insurance 😅
@L35inColorado

Oh yeah, these engines are too much stuff in too little space! It seems that Toyota has committed to cramming ever-expanding transverse V6's into ever-shrinking engine bays, LOL! Thanks for sharing your 3MZ-FE experience - good job sorting it out : ) I agree about the coils: if you have more cash than time, then swap in new coils while you're back there; if you have more time than cash, cross your fingers and hope they last 200K. I would definitely recommend replacing all the rear coils if you're in there for a second spark plug change at 200K miles or more, and keeping them the original rear coils as spares for the front bank when those eventually fail, since those are so easy to replace. Thanks for watching, and thanks for adding your tips! : )

If you need to change Sienna (or similar Toyota V6) plugs, this is the only video you should watch. Literally a step by step video manual with torque specs included. As she mentions, for the rear plugs, you don't necessarily need to remove the wipers etc; and I only removed the insulator below the cowl held by the 4 square plastic nuts. I could still visualize/manipulate everything, and the plenum still had clearance to lift/slide out, but I had to unbolt the bracket from the rear of the plenum. To reinstall, I loosely bolted the bracket on the plenum first and rotated it while sliding the plenum back in place. If only all car repair videos were this detailed. Thank you for posting this, A+

This is the best how-to video I have ever seen. It is clear, well organized, and thorough. It shows hidden tabs, inserts and slots that is very helpful in removing plastic parts. It clearly shows where to pinch the clips on plastic part connections and electrical connectors to release the locking mechanism. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting this awesome video together. After breaking two ignition coil connector clips, despite being very careful, I found that it is easier to cut the tape on the wire harness bundle to create slack so that I don't have to disconnect it from the coil. Again, thank you L35. Awesome jog.

Although I haven't reached 29k miles on my 2018 RX450h F Sport, I have reached the 72-month milestone. I have purchased all OE Spark Plugs, Ignition Coils, and PCV Valve and plan on doing a comprehensive tuneup. I also plan to clean both my Throttle Body and my Mass Air Flow Sensor. I have never done this before, but, I've watched a dozen Spark Plug replacement videos multiple times. However, your video was the most informative and insightful I've yet to see. Even the errors you highlighted and corrected were teaching moments. Even though my vehicle is slightly different than the one you've worked on, the overall concept is the same. Good job young lady, good job.

Today, I changed the spark plugs on my 2011 Sienna with 110k. Everything went smooth, many thanks to L35. This is an amazing video with all the Torque values. I ordered the parts online from Toyota with discount coupon, 6 spark plugs, 3 intake manifold gasket and throttle body gasket cost me 95 dollars , shipping included. It took about 3 hours. Most difficult part getting the back screws holding the intake manifold. I had to use multiple extensions and 5/8 spark plug socket to get the back spark plugs.

Well, finally did it. I probably should not have waited until 141,000 miles. Every clip of the six electrical connections to the coils broke. They literally shattered when barely touched. One spark plug took about thirty minutes to remove, gently working it in and out, with some WD-40. Luckily, it was Bank two, spark plug # six, in the front. All back together and the van runs great. Thanks for such great in depth, detail.

This is by far the best video for replacing spark plugs on 2011-16 siennas! I just tackled this job solo and this video helped me do it. I would like to add some tips of my own for those who are going to do this on their own. Firstly, the ignition coils in the back can be pulled without unplugging the electrical connections. Just release the plastic clips that hold the large wiring harness that contains the coil wires (3-4 clips) and this will give you enough room to remove the coil packs easily and prevents you from breaking any electrical connections which are super fragile! I broke an electrical connection on the #4 coil which is ok with me since its in the front and easy to replace. The 2 bolts on the back of the plenum was a little tight but with a small ratchet & socket will get them off. I only took one bolt off on the passenger side of the plenum and one on the driver side and it came off pretty easily. Taping with masking tape & labeling the hoses & plugs makes the reconnection easier to remember. It took me 5 hours to do the job but included cleaning the engine bay, cowl, hoses, cover, throttle body, & taking a long lunch break! It would've only taken me about 2 hours or less if I had just replaced the plugs without cleaning anything else. Oh, btw, I broke a hex bolt on the plenum using a torque wrench with only 13 foot/pounds on it. It worked for 3 but it snapped the 4th bolt! I will never trust another torque wrench again! But I would definitely take my vehicle to this awesome female mechanic over any of the male mechanics I've ever used! Shout out to this woman for her DIY video and explanations on every step of the way!

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make this video. The time stamps in the comment along with the torque specs were immensely helpful. Your video made a complex project one that was much less scary. I think the TEQ spark plug socket is now made by Gearwrench, or at least that's what Amazon sells. The extended Hex sockets were absolutely necessary. I also struggled to get the bracket on the back of the surge tank reattached. I would think putting it on loosely would be a big help if I ever have to do it again. I also swapped out the vacuum hoses that were under the surge tank and the one that connects to the brake booster so I won't have to remove that again anytime soon. Fantastic work. Thanks again!

Completed 2015 Sienna today. The connectors to the spark plugs were extremely brittle. Even a pick did not help. Replaced the front three connectors with news ones. On the back bank, I disconnected the wire harness from the valve cover and one more plug to the rear. This gave enough slack in the wiring to pull the ignitors out without disconnecting them. The harness disconnects easily. If your connectors are as brittle as mine, I recommend this approach. Thanks again, for the instructions, parts, and torque values. Made the job much easier.

I bought a 2010 Lexus RX 350 with the same engine two months ago and it has 114,500 miles on it as of today. I have since watched many YT videos on how to DIY in replacing the spark plugs, but none was satisfactory. Some of them were shortened, some of them were disorganized, and the rest were just poorly explained -- until the YT algorithm decided to put yours on my screen's recommendation list. Now I have no excuse to procrastinate on this DIY job, which the dealer and some local shops quoted between $850 to $1,000. L35...I have a 2009 Toyota Venza with the same engine in it ...3.5L. A buddy and I are getting ready to tear it apart d/t a misfire code on cylinder 5. All I can say is WOW...I'm impressed at your thoroughness and especially your angled video shots of the back of the engine. How in the world did you do that?!! I'm really impressed with your knowledge about engines. I was a Registered Nurse for 40 years and one of the (female) nurses I worked with raced dragsters in her off time. @L35inColorado
@L35inColorado 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks! Hopefully your #5 misfire is just the coil/ignitor, which would be an easy fix, but as you know there's a lot of parts to remove to reach that #5 in the first place! In my experience with these engines and Toyota engines in general, a single-cylinder misfire is either a bad igniter/coil (usually the case), or an oil-soaked spark plug due to a leaky valve cover gasket (less common, and usually you have multiple cylinder misfires). Hopefully it is the ignitor/coil because that is an easy (once you get back there). To test the possibility of a bad coil, you can swap a known good coil from one of the Bank 2 cylinders (the cylinders that are easy to reach). Then if the misfire moves from #5 to the other cylinder up front, you know that the problem is the coil and you can just swap in a new coil. I hope that helps - good luck! : )

For anyone changing plugs on a 2015 Highlander 2GR-FE , you absolutely do not need to remove the cowl below the windshield. Plenty of room to get those rear plugs out. I just replaced my plugs, 2 hours and 15 minutes start to finish. This included cleaning the Throttle body and mass airflow sensor. My local Toyota dealership quoted me $746.00 , parts and labor. 5 hours labor, what a ripoff! I installed OEM Denso FK20HR11 Iridium plugs, $11.00 ea from Autozone. I initially purchased a set of 6 off ebay, they were counterfeit parts, thank you AMD @ car care nut for providing examples of the many counterfeit products out there. Outstanding video and editing- and way better than any of the others I saw on the subject. THanks especially for the 'appendix' on changing out the coil plugs- that info really saved me on my 2011, as five of six of mine broke (one disintegrated while changing out the leads). Two notes for others: (1) on 2011, the left and right brackets bolt have a solid bolt holes (not slotted)- get the left and right bracket bolts half started before torqueing down the manifold plenum (four 5mm cap screws and two 10mm nuts). Otherwise, once the manifold is down hard, it's nearly impossible to align the holes and start the threads. (2) On the replacement plugs, make sure the silver contacts seat down (toward the latch) to allow the lug in the coil to slide in above the contact in the plug. Thanks again for getting me through this job!

Also, this is an excellent picture DIY from toyotanation, written by a Toyota tech: www.toyotanation.com/threads/diy-2007-2011-2grfe-v6-camry-spark-plug-and-intake-gasket-replacement-w-pics.1233369/ Thanks for watching, thanks for your comment, and good luck!

I’m a little overdue in replacing the plugs on my Sienna, and I have to say this is the best video I’ve found for this. Also, it’s one of the best instructional videos I have found period! Thanks for doing this and all the extra information such as time stamps, part numbers etc!

This video is amazing! I have been doing repairs for years just from KZbin and this is ABSOLUTELY the best video I've watched...NICE WORK!! Do you make or do anymore on your/a Sienna? Please do!!!!

Thanks! This is my father's Sienna - they are good vans and typically don't require much repair. For the Sienna, I have these videos on the channel: - oil change; - fuel pump replacement; - how to check the fuel pressure; - starter replacement; - spark plugs. I'll add new videos as jobs come up, and overall she's a very reliable van! Thanks for watching : )

Wow what a skilled and detailed video. As soon as the weather turns I think I will tackle mine. 240 K on the plugs so it is probably time.

Mine was a 2004 3.3 with 240k. A little different and most of the time spent on one tank support bolt. (Lots of bad words on that) your label idea made reassembly a lot simpler. Surprisingly the old plugs looked pretty good. It runs much better now but that could be due to a TB clean out and a new PCVvalve. Thanks again for your comprehensive video

Flawless! I was about to tackle this for a third time and wanted to review. I lucked out and found L35’s comprehensive treatment of the process. You use the simplest path to get this gnarly process done right. Your camera work, post editing, content and story telling narrative make this an absolute pleasure to watch. Based on your approach I decided not to tighten the airbox by feel and got an in-lb torque wrench, and have switched over to felpro. Sparkplug type can get confusing as there are lots of options - yours is the correct longlife selection. I can't imagine how much prep goes into your videos but it is very much appreciated. By the way, I've got the tattoo times 4 for breaking and replacing those pesky ignitor connectors. Toyota Part 90980-11885 and AbsoluteWittsEnd "Connector Pin Tool". Not a godawful process. Videos are out there but nothing like your work. Sooo happy to have found your channel!!!

Wow, thank you so much for your comment and for the SuperThanks! Yes, those ignitor connectors get so brittle - it is a relief when they don't break. Thanks again for watching! : )

@L35inColorado I'm doing this tomorrow with felpro gaskets etc., so I watched your treatment again. Not sure how I missed your connector treatment at the end the first time. Yes, it's better than anything out there. Thanks again!!

So, done! I flipped through your video to catch torque values etc, and it really made a difference. This time around, I have a few additions to the method. That brake booster hose can be removed from the airbox right after the throttlebody, and reinstalled just before the TB. Makes airbox removal a little less of a fuss. Electrical contact cleaner sprayed on the ignitor connectors makes wiggling them off just a little easier. Still, had to replace the #5 connector armed with your masterclass and a Toyota connector. I marked the pesky bracket at #1 cylinder before removing it for the #1 cyl plug and ignitor R/R, so I was reasonably certain it would line up with the airbox later. Keeping the airbox hexbolts loose while fitting up those two airbox screws, and leaving the umbilical tie-down adjacent to #1 cyl disconnected made lining those two screws much simpler. Thanks!. I used a small piece of shop (paper) towel between a long socket and the passenger side AB screw to capture it and set the screw without losing grip. That made the airbox screw at #1 cyl almost easy! You can reattach the umbilical tie-down without much effort after you lock the bolt down. Thank you sooo much for this video. Over the last week, I R/R'd the front shocks, flushed the transmission with 12qts of WS, flushed the coolant and replaced the thermostat (yeah, that was tricky), and this was my last operation. Usually I dread it. This time I actually had fun, kinda weird I know!

I want to thank you. Ive had a lot of anxiety about whether I could tackle doing this job myself. You have instilled a huge amount of confidence in me and now I know that I most definitely can. Thank you! Also on the cross threading...my Dad taught me a trick if you seat the plug or bolt where it is to go, turn it backwards first before threading it in, you will feel the threads drop when they match up. You can then thread forward by hand with confidence that they are aligned and not cross threaded.

@L35 in Colorado This is my next big project on my Sienna... anyways I am an engineer working for one of the Big 3 companies, and we spend so much time and effort on developing torque specs. You are one of the handful mechanics on KZbin actually torquing all fasteners.. for that, I appreciate your great work and that puts you above and beyond.

@@nickpark9587 Haha, thanks! That's really neat - I had some training from a couple of good mechanical engineers, an engine rebuilder buddy, and a really conscientious shop machinist, so it was impressed upon me to "torque properly"! So whenever possible, I always share any torque values I have. Thanks for watching! : )
