Then tell us to not get annoyed at generalizations that are only very specifically applicable, presented as a universal truth. Add her outright inaccurate statements and her videos are just infuriating. I've seen plenty of British shows that use visualizations to describe the size of things QI with "The Blue Whale's heart is the size of a Volkswagen Beetle" or "A sperm whales throat is no bigger than a grapefruit" or "My garden is big, about the size of a football pitch" It isn't a uniquely American practice. Certainly a football pitch is easier to visualize than 7140 square meters. Cloudy lemonade and Automatic transmissions are both the most common versions of those things world-wide (Asia, generally agrees with us). Add that the earliest recorded cloudy lemonade dates almost 500 years before the !830s introduction of Fizzy lemonade. And "Lemonade is a fizzy drink" becomes something a provincial bumpkin says Heck even Lewis pointed out, soccer is a British nickname for the sport that is almost as old as the sport itself. It only fell out of use (meaning that print citations of football exceeded soccer) in the UK in the 1980s. The weird Irish girl who lives in Spain is not British at all of course. That said, if she wants us to stop calling American football, football, then she'll have to get all of Europe and Oceania to stop calling all sandwiches, burgers. All burgers are sandwiches, but not all sandwiches are burgers, and it has nothing to do with the bun, it's the ground beef that makes a burger a burger. As you pointed out, soccer is a British term in the first place. I've never heard of fizzy lemonade at all. We don't even really have that much lemon soda, it's more of a lemon-lime mix like Sprite, 7-Up, Starry, et al.

Hamburgers are hamburgers because of both the bun and the ground beef shaped into a patty. I’m sure you know they originated in Hamburg, Germany. Add whatever you want to it, change whatever you want about it, but as long as it has a bun (and not just a piece of bread) and a patty, then it’s a burger. Turkey patty makes a turkey burger. Add some cheese instead of changing the meat and you’ve got a cheeseburger. Your point stands, I’m just giving you a hard time.
@bradparnell6145 ай бұрын
I think they originated in America from German immigrants and Hamburg is where they exited Germany which is where the name came from. They were called Hamburg Steaks until the 1930s when the name Hamburger was invented. There are multiple claims on the origin of the name when it became a sandwich but most include two pieces of bread rather than any buns. Before being shortened to Hamburger, it was actually known as the Hamburger Sandwich. I'm used to people giving me a hard time about it from multiple countries. I don't mind because I've found I'm not remotely alone on my side of the discussion. What is odd is that I'm an Anglophile and I have no problem with different names for things we came up with on our own like truck/lorry, elevator/lift, sneakers/trainers, etc. It's just the burger thing that I can't get past. Weird, I know.

These are the “meat balls” you mentioned. They have a flat bottom, sorta like a knish. Mind that the population of the colonies was barely 1.5 million in 1750, and the colonies hadn’t even declared independence and started the war. Heck, they hadn’t even been around for 150 years at that point, whereas Hamburger Rundstück (the non-ground beef version, complete with bun) was popularized prior to 1870, which was even before Germany first became an empire. The first advertisements in the states for the food didn’t even start until the mid 1880s. The hamburger as we know it today might have been an American invention and evolved here since, but the idea already existed in Hamburg long beforehand. There are so many other things in the states that people have no idea had German origin.

The I voted sticker is that it just says I voted it doesn't state who you voted for. It just has the American flag on it, and it says I voted. Sure - for graduate school. But not K-12, or undergraduate. K-12 we got report cards every 6 weeks. College - each semester (or quarter depending on the university) and the total determined pass/fail. Grad school - very different, right?
@JohnOlsen-dt9ek5 ай бұрын
In K-12 we were always on the semester system (school year divided into 2 separate halves), and Final Exams accounted for a large percentage of your overall grade (typically 35-40%). Undergrad course work at Uni/College worked the same way. Some graduate degree programs are all or nothing, where your oral exam and thesis amount to pass/fail. Also note that we don't grade our Uni degrees, so nobody "takes a first" in the U.S. Only the highest achievers in a graduating class get special honors. Completing a degree earns you a diploma and an official transcript showing all your course marks.

An American football field is 100 yards (91.44 meters). Therefore, if it’s as big as 3 football fields, it’s 300 yards. Much easier than multiplying out 91.44m. Here’s something about lemonade. Automatic transmissions have been the norm here since the mid 60s EXCEPT for sport/performance cars. In the 1950s when they were introduced they were inefficient (poorer gas mileage) and kinda dodgy. My 56 Chevy had a 2-speed auto with a pattern that went P-N-2-1-R, so you could manually shift directly from forward to reverse if you weren't careful. My buddy's Rocket 88 Oldsmobile had an auto transmission with no Park option! Modern auto transmissions with 5 or more gears are very safe and efficient and allow drivers to pay more attention to the road.-

Automatic transmissions are the norm here -- if you want a manual, you actually have to order it that way -- so many if not most Americans have never driven a manual transmission car. We complain because we expect a certain level of service and quality in what we receive and when we don't get it, we don't hesitate to bring it to management's attention. Garbage disposals are for getting rid of organic vegetable matter and table scraps ... not bones, or shells or fibrous things like potato peels and shrimp shells ... those would all destroy the disposal. Just think of it as a very powerful grinder ... and everything just gets washed down the drain and is never seen again. The term "soccer" originated in Britain in the late 1800s as a way to differentiate "Association Football" from another type of football, "Rugby Football". Students at Oxford University shortened "Association Football" to "Assoc.," which when written, could be pronounced "Assock". At the time, it was also fashionable at Oxford to add "-er" to words, so "soccer" was born. The term quickly spread beyond the university campus and became the preferred term in America to differentiate from Gridiron Football.
