My go to for it is: in a gallon jug - 2 cups lemon juice, 1 cup sugar, and fill the rest with water. Serve with ice if outside otherwise leave it in the fridge and pour a cup whenever over the next 2 to 3 days. Short shelf life unfortunately. Also taste the lemon juice beforehand, if it's too sour no amount of sugar can save it.

They used to have real lemonade in the UK. I have seen them reference in on Downton Abbey and that show was meticulous about historical accuracy. I believe they went away from it when carbonated drinks became more popular. So this isn’t a super old thing. But funny story I asked if they had fresh lemonade at the hard rock in London. They brought me an entire glass of purrs fresh squeezed lemon juice. I later asked for sugar and drank it. It was hilarious. They do sell real lemonade at mark and Spencer.

It generally means that some we heard or even saw doesn't make sense and we need to hear or see it again to make sure we understood it the first time. It's basically the verbal expression of "doing a double take". Sorry that's a terrible explanation, lol. I won't list everything she understands incorrectly about the USA. @@Michael-kf7gm Then she shouldn't make sweeping generalizations about a country of 330 million+ people. You just said it, she is speaking from her limited experience, but labeling her observations as applying to all of us. Then tell us to not get annoyed at generalizations that are only very specifically applicable, presented as a universal truth. Add her outright inaccurate statements and her videos are just infuriating. I've seen plenty of British shows that use visualizations to describe the size of things QI with "The Blue Whale's heart is the size of a Volkswagen Beetle" or "A sperm whales throat is no bigger than a grapefruit" or "My garden is big, about the size of a football pitch" It isn't a uniquely American practice. Certainly a football pitch is easier to visualize than 7140 square meters. Cloudy lemonade and Automatic transmissions are both the most common versions of those things world-wide (Asia, generally agrees with us). Add that the earliest recorded cloudy lemonade dates almost 500 years before the !830s introduction of Fizzy lemonade. And "Lemonade is a fizzy drink" becomes something a provincial bumpkin says Heck even Lewis pointed out, soccer is a British nickname for the sport that is almost as old as the sport itself. It only fell out of use (meaning that print citations of football exceeded soccer) in the UK in the 1980s. Brits go on about inventing the language (they didn't) but have such a short memory about the language history, it is absolutely pitiful.

The weird Irish girl who lives in Spain is not British at all of course. That said, if she wants us to stop calling American football, football, then she'll have to get all of Europe and Oceania to stop calling all sandwiches, burgers. All burgers are sandwiches, but not all sandwiches are burgers, and it has nothing to do with the bun, it's the ground beef that makes a burger a burger. As you pointed out, soccer is a British term in the first place. I've never heard of fizzy lemonade at all. We don't even really have that much lemon soda, it's more of a lemon-lime mix like Sprite, 7-Up, Starry, et al.

Hamburgers are hamburgers because of both the bun and the ground beef shaped into a patty. I’m sure you know they originated in Hamburg, Germany. Add whatever you want to it, change whatever you want about it, but as long as it has a bun (and not just a piece of bread) and a patty, then it’s a burger. Turkey patty makes a turkey burger. Add some cheese instead of changing the meat and you’ve got a cheeseburger. Your point stands, I’m just giving you a hard time.
@bradparnell614
@bradparnell614 5 ай бұрын
I think they originated in America from German immigrants and Hamburg is where they exited Germany which is where the name came from. They were called Hamburg Steaks until the 1930s when the name Hamburger was invented. There are multiple claims on the origin of the name when it became a sandwich but most include two pieces of bread rather than any buns. Before being shortened to Hamburger, it was actually known as the Hamburger Sandwich. I'm used to people giving me a hard time about it from multiple countries. I don't mind because I've found I'm not remotely alone on my side of the discussion. What is odd is that I'm an Anglophile and I have no problem with different names for things we came up with on our own like truck/lorry, elevator/lift, sneakers/trainers, etc. It's just the burger thing that I can't get past. Weird, I know.

@@rmkarros Actually, the idea predates America. “Hamburg Steaks” were served in Germany (before it was even a country), then known as “Frikadelle”, in the 1700s. These are the “meat balls” you mentioned. They have a flat bottom, sorta like a knish. Mind that the population of the colonies was barely 1.5 million in 1750, and the colonies hadn’t even declared independence and started the war. Heck, they hadn’t even been around for 150 years at that point, whereas Hamburger Rundstück (the non-ground beef version, complete with bun) was popularized prior to 1870, which was even before Germany first became an empire. The first advertisements in the states for the food didn’t even start until the mid 1880s. The hamburger as we know it today might have been an American invention and evolved here since, but the idea already existed in Hamburg long beforehand. There are so many other things in the states that people have no idea had German origin.

Also America used to have manual as the default but since we've advanced our default has changed to automatic but there are still people who drive sticks/manual. Some of the automatic cars also have the option to switch between the two. I have 2013 chevy malibu and it has the option to switch to manual.

@JohnOlsen-dt9ek 5 ай бұрын
In K-12 we were always on the semester system (school year divided into 2 separate halves), and Final Exams accounted for a large percentage of your overall grade (typically 35-40%). Undergrad course work at Uni/College worked the same way. Some graduate degree programs are all or nothing, where your oral exam and thesis amount to pass/fail. Also note that we don't grade our Uni degrees, so nobody "takes a first" in the U.S. Only the highest achievers in a graduating class get special honors. Completing a degree earns you a diploma and an official transcript showing all your course marks.

An American football field is 100 yards (91.44 meters). Therefore, if it’s as big as 3 football fields, it’s 300 yards. Much easier than multiplying out 91.44m. Here’s something about lemonade. Automatic transmissions have been the norm here since the mid 60s EXCEPT for sport/performance cars. In the 1950s when they were introduced they were inefficient (poorer gas mileage) and kinda dodgy. My 56 Chevy had a 2-speed auto with a pattern that went P-N-2-1-R, so you could manually shift directly from forward to reverse if you weren't careful. My buddy's Rocket 88 Oldsmobile had an auto transmission with no Park option! Modern auto transmissions with 5 or more gears are very safe and efficient and allow drivers to pay more attention to the road.-

Automatic transmissions are the norm here -- if you want a manual, you actually have to order it that way -- so many if not most Americans have never driven a manual transmission car. We complain because we expect a certain level of service and quality in what we receive and when we don't get it, we don't hesitate to bring it to management's attention. Garbage disposals are for getting rid of organic vegetable matter and table scraps ... not bones, or shells or fibrous things like potato peels and shrimp shells ... those would all destroy the disposal. Just think of it as a very powerful grinder ... and everything just gets washed down the drain and is never seen again. The problem in the US is you can't even get manual transmissions in most cars anymore even when basically the same model is sold in Europe with a manual. I tried to order a replacement for my 17 year old manual Audi A4 and was told they haven't been available in the US for the last 5 or 6 years. Also can't import one from Germany unless it's temporary use for under a year or paying a ton to get it modified and certified.

Any more we have the stupid double clutch flappy paddle shifters in place of manual. Semi automatic or whatever it's called. Plus our automatics are 8 to 12 speed anymore making them more fuel efficient than manuals.

@garycamara9955 I have an automatic that I drive loads, and I even have a license. So I guess your statement is incorrect and people that drive automatics can drive. I bet you didn’t know that I can actually manually shift it if I felt like it? But I never have because I have a life and don’t equate the shifting of my car to an actual skill. All kinds of bozos can drive a manual.

The "I Voted" stickers are a way to remind people to vote. In the U.S. voting day is on a workday, so sometimes you have to remind people to go vote before or after work. There is a movement to get election days changed to either a holiday or a weekend, so more people can vote. It's hard to take off work to vote when you have to work enough hours to pay the bills.

The reason we use football fields as a standard of measure in the U.S. is because they have a standardized length - it's 120 yards from the outer edge of one end zone to its counterpart on the other end of the field. Plus, nearly every high school in America has a football field. My little bitty home town of 5,000 people still has a high school football team.

In school we were graded on class work that we’d have every day and homework every day and then unit tests (usually once a week or so) counted for a little bit more and each semester there was a final. Each counted for a certain percentage and it all mattered. It sucked! And of course we had projects or papers too

"How would you like your eggs?" Possible answers: Over-easy, over-hard, sunny-side up, hard boiled, soft boiled, soft scrambled, hard scrambled, scrambled with cheese, Denver(or other regional) scramble, omelet, on a biscuit/bagel/English muffin with bacon & cheese, over hash, yolkless/whites only, poached, eggs Benedict, with a steak, in a breakfast burrito. And that's not even touching the vast array of omelets available.

FYI: a garbage disposal is NOT for trash or big pieces of food. It’s for food scraps and you shouldn’t be trying to use it in place of a trash can. I’ve seen so many videos of non Americans believing that that’s what happens when it’s not.

The term "soccer" originated in Britain in the late 1800s as a way to differentiate "Association Football" from another type of football, "Rugby Football". Students at Oxford University shortened "Association Football" to "Assoc.," which when written, could be pronounced "Assock". At the time, it was also fashionable at Oxford to add "-er" to words, so "soccer" was born. The term quickly spread beyond the university campus and became the preferred term in America to differentiate from Gridiron Football.

I like my lemonade tart! Basic recipe is... 6 lemons 1 cup white sugar (start with 1/4 cup and add more to taste) 6 cups water, or more as needed Refrigerate and serve over ice. The best thing to do is make a simple syrup to be sure the sugar dissolves. Then mix with lemon juice and water.
