Traditionally, I was taught as a youngster that tipping was expected at restaurants with sit-down service. Tipping is NOT done at fast food places or going up to any restaurant where you need to walk up to a counter to place an order, where you have to pick up your own food and carry it yourself to your table. I was taught that you are tipping for the personal service the server provided to you. (I am an older person now.)

One thing that I take into consideration is how is the employee compensated. Fast food workers and most other employees and paid at least minimum wage. Although the federal minimum wage is a paltry $7.25 an hour, in some states it's a much more reasonable $15 an hour. I never tip at fat food restaurants. However, food service workers who are expected to receive tips may only earn the food service workers minimum wage of an absurd $2 and change! Adding insult to invite, those employees are taxed on their assumed tips of at least 6% of sales. Those workers depend on tips for their very survival.

@@greeneyedlady5580So there's a few things you brought up worth responding to. $15 an hour is ridiculously overpaid for a minimum. It doesn't help anyone. But the idea with the $2.13/hr tipped minimum wage was that the hourly wage is designed to cover your taxes on your tips. That's it. But many tipped employees take advantage of it. They will claim as few tips as they can so they can still get welfare, section 8 housing, and other federal aid, but tipped employees can make very good wages. We are talking $50+/hr in tips even at a basic restaurant like Applebees. I've known people who worked 4 hour shifts and brought home $500 a day. But in states where there is no separate tipped minimum wage (like mine), I don't tip.

Ok,regarding health care costs: Usually, insurance will cover a percentage of the cost and have a max out of pocket limit. Companies with over 50 employees are required to offer health insurance or pay a fine. There are also places that offer affordable health insurance, including through the government. I had to have back surgery. It was over 100k. I had to cover 20%. That was more than my yearly out of pocket, so I only had to pay that. I paid it with my Flexible Health Care that i fund with pre-tax deductions spread out over the year. Yes, medical bills are astronomical, but few people (if any) pay the entire bill themselves.
@kebonhawk1081
@kebonhawk1081 6 ай бұрын
True. But. Most companies in the US only hire "part time" employees to avoid having to offer benefits. And out of pocket insurance is ridiculously expensive. On top of that you're paying monthly for something you hopefully won't need for years. Nice to have when you do need it but giving it to an insurance company when you can barely afford food, gas, mortgage, and all the rest of expenses of life. Yes there are government services but even those plans you have to pay monthly for and for every visit to the doctor there's a 40$+ co-pay. You'd think the government would want to keep you healthy as long as they could, without struggling to stay alive, to collect taxes for the duration. We all pay social security and medicare with every paycheck but only certain people are eligible for the benefits. Sorry for the rant but this subject infuriates me.

We had an engineer who moved to Chicago from Manchester UK. The first thing that we really noticed that had us floored was eating corn. We had lunch in the company cafeteria and the corn was the lowest grade of institutional food quality. So, none of us were eating our corn. The Brit could not believe we were not eating our corn and ate all the corn from about 8 of our plates and he was as happy at a pig at an endless buffet. So, British people should visit midwest (including Chicago) and get sweet corn picked 3 hours prior to cooking and covered with real butter. Also, have someone with you capable of making you stop eating it.

As someone who lived off tips as a waiter many, many years ago, please do not punish a server by not tipping if the mistake is not theirs. An example would be that your meal wasn't up to your satisfaction. Even if the restaurant takes the price of your meal off of your bill, please tip the server as if you paid full price. Also, slower than expected service (waiting for your meal) is often not your server's fault. It's usually because the kitchen is backed up, or short staffed.

If you order food at a counter and then take it to your table yourself you don't have to tip, however, there are sometimes tip jars by the register and you can CHOOSE to tip only if you want to, if the service was great or the food was perfect or if you are just in a generous mood.

He only left tips for sit down service, never for meals that you served yourself (meaning fast food joints). Note: just because you see a tip jar on the counter does not oblige you to leave a tip. Handing you a donut and cup of coffee does not require a tip. (IMHO)

I waited for her to come over and see it. When she got upset and questioned me about it I gave her a detailed response as to why. I assured her that I was a generous tipper when the service is great. One of my best friends in High School's family was from Haslingdon, near Bolton. It was so much fun learning about Britain. I learned to make Cornish Pasties and Yorkshire Pudding and Trifle. I loved the accent. My mum's family came over from London in the my grandfather was born in 1872. About tipping, if someone provides a service, you give them a tip. For really good service, I sometimes tip 25% I waited tables during college and even after to make extra money. My daughter, too, and my husband worked at Pizza Hut to get through college. So we know good service. If we see someone who couldn't give a crap, we maybe leave like 10% because you never know if they have had a death in their family, a sick child, etc. Super neglected, like 5% but I'd tell the manager why so hopefully they can improve. I love traveling in America because I like trying all the regional food. As I've said, Americans LOVE accents. I will ask people where they are from and strike up a conversation if they feel like it. During the course of my husband's career, we lived in Brisbane, Australia ; Atyrau, Kazakhstan; Bucharest, Romania and Rotterdam, The Netherlands. People spoke to me about my accent. And I had to learn Russian and Romanian a bit. The people were lovely in each country. Every time I'd go from driving in Brisbane to driving near our home in Texas, I'd accidentally make left turns the wrong way but was able to correct, thank God. Under Biden, crime has gotten so much worse because the District Attorneys in many major cities will arrest a criminal, take their fingerprints etc. and, without bail, they're out on the street in 3 hours. With all the people coming across the border without checking who they are, has also increased crime. When we lived in other countries, we had to get shots, get physicals, already have a job there and follow all the country's laws. If you like driving, come to Texas. British TV is awesome. When we lived in Romania, we got BBCs and ITV and I loved The Chase and Untenable. Also, you should find Coupling from the early 2000s. It's freaking hilarious and genius. I learned my British humor from Monty Python and Fawlty Towers and Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes. And my British friends. Dry, sly humor is the best

If you get a service done, like the spray tan, and it goes bad or wasn't the quality agreed upon; most businesses will typically offer you a discount, offer you a discount on/ free service next visit, or just not charge you. In those instances a tip would not be expected. Also don't tip everyone, because some businesses don't allow the employees to take tips, gifts, etc. from customers. I work at an upscale clothing store, and often time customers and clients want to give us gifts or tips, but we are not allowed to accept them. You mostly tip when you are at a sit down dinning establishment where a waiter or waitress takes your order, gets your drinks and food, and delivers them to you at your table. They will check on you regularly, refill your drinks, make sure you have things you need (like condiments, extra napkins, utensils, etc.), and bring/serve your food to you. That's the most dominant place you'll find tipping. Some people I believe tip a bartender at a bar, but I don't drink or go to bars, but I'm certain it's normal. Other places you may need to tip is barbers/hair stylist, delivery services such as food delivery, or grocery delivery. Also in bigger cities where you take a taxi, I believe it's appropriate to tip your driver. Also if you get an Uber ride, it's probably a good idea to tip. Also some restaurants already factor a tip into the service called a gratuity. You are not required to tip because it's already factored in. That's typically done if you have a larger group of people in your party, but I have seen some places that do that for everyone. The server should let you know up front or before you pay thart gratuity was already included. (It's rare but does happen.) Now if you hang out with some really rich people there are different rules. Like if a valet parks your car, a bellhop in a fancy hotel carries your luggage to your room, a caddy at a golf club carries your clubs and drives you around the course all day, you get a massage/facial, and those types of things then I believe tips are appropriate. I'm sure they tip everyone. 🤣😂 But if you are uncertain about tipping in certain situations, it's okay to just ask, "Do you take tips?" They'll let you know yes or no. It's not rude to ask and especially since you are a foreigner, they should be extra understanding. Most tips are about 10 -15% of your bill. Somethings like grocery delivery or take-out delivery 5-15% is normal.

Tipping has changed over the years. My personal rules are that I do not tip at a counter. If it's a sit-down place, I tip if there's a server, but not if someone just drops off food and I have to get my own refills. However, if they drop off food and get refills, then I leave a nominal tip. Full server meals 15% for ok service, 20% for good, and up to 25% for exceptional service. I live in the Midwest in a town of under 100,000, so the only other places I usually tip are at a salon for services like hair styling and massages.

Where I live, servers only make $2.13 an hour + tips. So it is rude to go to a restaurant and not tip. The restaurant is required to pay them minimum wage if they don't make enough tips to make at least that much. A good rule of thumb is always tipping 15% on anything. No less than 10% unless you absolutely hated the service. And you can add 5%, 10% or even 15% to the base 15% tip depending on how happy you were with the service. Keep in mind that typically places that are not restaurants are still required to pay their employees minimum wage. So it might seem to be expected for you to tip, but it's not necessary. Tipping means that you like the service, or specifically the way they served you. Sometimes friendly people are tipped more. Sometimes people who don't talk and just quietly and efficiently do their work are tipped more. Outside of restaurants it's not actually rude to not tip. It's just a way of acknowledging the efforts or skills of an individual and showing them gratitude for it. The percentage equals the satisfaction and gratitude of the customer. So, many places have tipping options, just in case someone wants to show gratitude. Since receiving money can be difficult for some people (for any number of reasons which I will not list here), it takes the awkwardness or possible inappropriate gesture and puts it in an acceptable form. I hope that helps reassure you about tipping. Rude people should always tip. Americans are generally very friendly unless others are very rude to them. So they might be nice the first time they serve you. But if you're rude and then don't tip them enough to compensate putting up with you, they will not be so friendly the next time. You shouldn't have any problem with that though. You're nice! If they enjoyed serving you and you showed gratitude in other ways for their service (like complements, being respectful or simply saying please and thank you), they won’t mind if you don't tip. A tip would just be like a cherry on top at that point.

If it's absolute shit service, leave a penny. It makes it clear that you didn't just forget to tip. (I was in food service for years).

Most of those horror stories come out of places like Chicago, where one can read about a dozen shootings in a weekend. I live in Oregon, and in 66 years have only witnessed a single shooting.

I live in Oregon, too. Most shootings here seem to be those where friends or family are involved. Not that that makes it better, but it makes me feel safer. On the other hand, we had a school shooting here in my small town. That was horrific.

As for tipping really bad service I used to be a waitress and all I can say is that leaving a very small tip (like 50 cents). Gives more of a message than no tip. If you leave nothing then they don’t know if you just don’t normally tip. If you leave a very small tip then that sends the message that there services were not worth much. I know it sounds harsh but it’s one way to get the message made.

A warning on tipping, sir. I see that others have said something similar to tipping at sit down restaurants and haircuts. That is a good rule of thumb. Tipping is also pretty customary if you have baggage check people in the front of the airport check your bags. You can give them anywhere from $1-5. If you're feeling generous, give more. You also tip cab drivers. Any cab ride I will tip $1, but if the ride ends up being a little longer it will start going up to $3-5 unless I go wildly far. Limo service tips are more in the $20 ish range. My word of warning is about random tip jars and credit card machines that try to semi "guilt" you into tipping. Jersey Mike's machine does that. They are already overcharging for their subs, and by that I mean a full size simple ham and cheese sandwich (plain) is close to $18. Thinking one should have to tip on top of that super high price is ridiculous. If you want to tip in these situations, then it's up to you... but you don't have to feel guilted into it. Another place in America where tipping is highly customary are strip clubs. Shaker joint chicks get tips. I stay away from these places nowadays ;-) I hope you do come and have a blast.

It used to be if you were in a shop getting help or getting your hair cut by the owner, you never tipped. It was considered rude. Now owners are fine accepting tips. Do others remember that?

Sarcasm in the U.S. varies a great deal by culture and region as well. I grew up in the midwest and moved to the southeast where pretty much no one gets my attempts at humor but find other things hilarious that to me are not particularly fun at all.

Sarcasm, by definition, is mockery. The term only applies to the mocking of a person. If there isn't mockery, it is not sarcasm. I do not like mockery, while many Brits and Irish are open with their verbal sadism. I do enjoy ironic humor, however.

I'm a deep south American. (All about hospitality, and manners). I also worked as a server at 2 different restaurants when I was 18-20. If you do your job (nothing more, nothing less) then the tip should be 20%, if you do a bad job (don't check up on how the food was, on top of refills, rude, etc etc) expect no tip, and if you go above and beyond (this can drastically change due to differences in people and what they want from a server) then tip above 20%. When ever in doubt 20% is good enough. I personally love how we do it here in America opposed to other places because it gives the workers an incentive to go above and beyond and they sky is the limit to how much they can make.

What has made it more difficult are the P.O.S. (point of sale) apps that automatically present a request for a tip. I do not tip at fast food places, but when paying with a card, it asks if you want to tip right after swiping / tapping / or inserting your card.

I only tip at sit down restaurants, food delivery drivers and coffee shops. If you're visiting the US and you take a tour and the guide was good, informative and you enjoyed the experience, it's up to you to tip them or not. That's it.

We do not tip fast food restaurants, only sit down restaurants that have waiters. You tip doormen, porters and you can tip drivers. Most Americans tip according to the service they get, bad service little or no tip, good service a normal tip. Some tip according to how many people are served at your table. So most tips are what you feel like you want to give. A couple of dollars to a % of the total bill. More expensive restaurants have a place on the receipt for the tip, if they do not you just leave the tip on the table.

regarding the sarcasm, that's pretty true. When Im using sarcastic humor, I don't smile, keep the same tone, etc and many people think Im complaining or being rude, but Im not. Others make it very clear of their sarcasm by being animated when using it. I think I relate to the Brits in this way. Then, again, we are becoming the "offended" culture now so we have to watch every damn thing we say

Tipping culture has changed. During the pandemic,restaurants only did take out and the servers depended on those tips for wages. Now that everything is open, some people expect the same tipping. 20 % for sit down restaurant, 10-15% for take out.

Im sure most ppl are saying they only tip at sit down restaurants. You may be thinking of you sit down at McDonald's you tip there, No. A "sit down" restaurant is considered when you go in and a hostess will sit you or you could seat yourself but you have a waitress/waiter that serves you (takes your order, brings food, drinks/refills ECT..) All you can eat buffets, you make your own plate but a server will bring your drinks/refill but you still tip. Fastfood McDonalds ECT.. no tipping. Subway will ask if you want to tip but you don't have to. I hardly ever tip somewhere like subway.
@raleighjones5750
@raleighjones5750 Ай бұрын
I never thought about why it would be confusing in a place like Subway but now I can see it. They're preparing the food for you, it's not just a burger off the shelf. a good rule of thumb, if you can pick your own table, you don't have to tip. The funny thing is they have started adding a tip as an option when you pay with your credit or debit card at places like Subway and McDonalds. I'm sure there are scenarios where this rule doesn't always apply, but for the most part, tip of there is someone who seats you.

Generally, I only tip when the meal is served to me at the table. There is one exception, which is at buffets. A new plate is required for each trip to the buffet serving line. To keep the plates from accumulating at the tables, the staff keeps them cleared away. They also serve the drinks to the tables. There is a personal thing about buffets as well. We tend to go to buffets for big family gatherings. With our 5 sons, two daughters-in-law, and 7 grandchildren, our servers are handling 16 people, and they can make or break the outing. We tend to tip very well if the staff does a good job. Buffets generally get us food for the whole crowd, with a good selection of foods, and we don't have to cook or clean up. That's worth a lot.

Hey UK Lew (my nickname for you!) Love your channel, your enthusiasm, appreciation for the US and life in general. You’ve brought many smiles and laughs to my days watching your content. You are endearing for sure! If I encounter bad service, I always talk to the owner or manager to give them a chance to correct the situation. They might not be aware that there’s a problem and if nobody says anything and customers don’t return, this could literally be the end of their business! I never leave a bad tip or no tip. I am 59, have lived in the US my entire life thus far. I have traveled to Europe and other locations around the world. In the US, I tip well at restaurants and usually at take away/counter service/coffee shops/ bakeries if they were super friendly. Just not as much as I would for a sit down service. I can see how it would be confusing for a foreigner to deal with the tipping here! I still don’t know for sure in some situations whether to tip or not! Lyft, taxis, valet, hairdressers, massage, etc. I tend to do some sort of tip on most services, but not all. If somebody is the owner, especially, I will ask if they usually get tips. Excited for you to finally visit the US sometime soon!
