This is not even 20% of what is in the chapter of laxmikant. Siddhart sir has just given a jist of first two pages and left the criticism part altogether which is actually important . Also, judicial restraint is a wider topic .This explanation is okay for a layman who wants to know a jist, not for a upsc aspirant.

The idea of judicial activism, when it emerged in the public realm, gained currency and some acceptance because it was considered necessary to correct the failings of the legislature and the misdeeds of the executive. But it has now grown into a situation where separation of powers of J, L and E (Basic Structure Doctrine) has been challenged. The role of the judiciary is to keep a check on the L and E making sure that laws made and executed by them respectively conform to the Constitution, not to frame and execute laws. J, L and E refer to the Judiciary, Legislative and Executive respectively.
