Pretty incredible that Adrian managed to remain as charismatic and convincing as he had even all the while the combat music was looping in the background for as long as it had - fair to assume, I think, that this was wholly unexpected. @extragarb3 жыл бұрын
Adrian came with the scariest weapon of all, a well developed explanation of why their greatest enemy was right (and the mental dexterity to deliver the pitch without losing them halfway through). I also am a bit disappointed that he didn't reap the success of that diplomatic checkmate, but it did kind of let us see two different battles for the same encounter. If the SI didn't refuse to let the four of them travel together, they'd all be in a car going where ever Adrian wanted them to be. We basically got to see the Kindred fully lose the encounter, then get a full second chance when it turned to violence at the last minute (unfortunately for them also mostly a loss, since Annabelle was completely taken).

Well "Masterfully" is relative here, outsmarting Erika at a game she never understood is like shooting fish in a barrel. In all those seasons she stayed an -actress- portraying a pre-set heap of characteristics that don't quite add up to a person. The game piece "Annabelle" never got a chance to evolve into a character, because Erika never evolved into a roleplayer who takes his job seriously being actor AND author of his role. So outplaying a static stagnant parody of a person with a well-known trigger is way too easy for a decent intrigue player who actually is roleplaying circles around her. Imagine if Annabelle was portrayed by anyone who understood that personalities can have multiple layers or someone who understood the Brujah Blood Flaw for that matter. Now that would be a hell of a scene to try and win for Adrian. But in his interactions with Xander we see that he would be ready for that. Sadly Erika is no match for him as she just isn't a roleplayer.

Adrian's line of shit was perfect for Annabelle. He hit her right in the vanity: "You are so special, you have a heart of gold, people instinctively follow you because your heart is pure, you can be SAVED!!!" All that was missing was the question "Have you taken the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior?" I'm surprised Ellinore and Carver let him get away with that. Carver, especially, was pretty passive for most of the episode. At least Ellinore made some feeble objections. It's also interesting that, even though Carver took Annabelle on a tour of Mid America specifically to put her in situations where she'd have to kill to survive, she apparently preserved her record of not killing anyone herself, while facilitating others to do her dirty work for her. The late Charles Manson would approve.

He also does some very key. When Carver relents so does he. Rather than press his attack when Carver is stunned by the true faith attack he lets Carver soak in the ramifications of what an extended fight with Adrian would entail then calmly and politely presents the Gladius's proposition. There is a second thing of note here as well. The SI wanted Annabelle or so it seemed. It is not expressly said, it could be Eleanore. Adrians order Torch the monster (obv Carver as indicated by the second part) stake the girls. This is after being told they were only expecting to take one of them and which one is not explicitly indicated. Whomever these higher ups are should allow the agent in the field to make command decisions. Changing the orders in the middle of an op is insane. It just seems it would be easier to get them together willingly, move them to a safer, less public location where you can control everything, and then eliminate the spares. Adrian had control of the situation and had eyes on. The higher ups made a mistake and it could have cost them. Operational awareness is important...🙂

We should be getting more By Night books after the SI one. Those are the best way to facilitate newcomers to start up a Chronicle that isn't based on Chicago. A Los Angeles one could be a good way of starting that, for sure.

Berkeley by night is a creepy scenario shaped by local players over about a decade and a half. Here, all supernatural activity is overseen by the awakened, who seem to flock in the area, due in no small part to the convergence of multiple strong ley lines that culminate in a transdimensional flecture that requires constant monitoring.
