Happy New Year to the France with Vero virtual community, whether you’ve been here for a few days, a few months or a few years!
Food and wine often get mentioned first when visitors are asked why they love France.
Understandable!
January and February can be labeled lackluster months especially in northern latitudes, following the sparkling, joyful Holiday season.
In my homeland there are still good times to be had (involving food, of course!) so we can all forget “la grisaille” (grey skies) surrounding us, at least for a few hours.
January 6 marks an important date (and a Christian holiday) but for most French natives (and visitors!) it’s “galette des Rois” season.
Here’s my take on this beloved tradition.
Bon appétit to all pastry lovers!
Words I’ve used in this video:
La galette des Rois (almond filling, puff pastry version)
La frangipane (almond filling)
La fève (trinket, often made of porcelain)
La couronne des Rois (Southern France version, brioche)
Les fruits confits (candied fruit)
The Elysée Palace (seat of the French Executive and French Kings - scratch that! - French Presidents!)
La Chandeleur (“Crêpe day”, February 2, 2024)
French TV show for kids: “Bonne nuit les petits” (Nicolas, Pimprenelle, Nounours)
