Love is not some essence of pleasure you can isolate and bottle. Their look is deeply beautiful and meaningful, even in fiction, but they are in pain, they are hurting. They have lost moments of their life forever, because two things can not exist at once. The actors are brilliant in this.

This ending works so well because it displays what true love really means! Putting another's happiness before your own. The film is all about following your dreams and in the end their character realised that they loved each other enough to let one another go if it meant they could achieve those dreams. There are many different kinds of love and sometimes we meet people in life that are merely guides for where we are truly meant to be.

The ending really puts all of La La Land’s scenes into a brilliant summary. Both loved each other & supported the other wholeheartedly, but as Mia & Sebastian’s arguement revealed, either one of them would be forced to give up his/her dreams at their partner’s expense, like the first 2 epilogue sequences shown. Mia & Sebastian would have seperated which they did for the sake of their dreams. However, they can abandon their career dreams & fufill their personal love for each other and marry. As romantic & happy as that may seem, in reality neither couple nor the audience would be satisfied with that sacrafice. The epilogue reveals that like real life, even though we love someone, sometines the relationship is just not meant to be. While it is dissapointing, La La Land debunks the happily ever after/ happy ending cliche often found in musicals or rom-coms which I love. They loved each other, but loved their dreams more which make their finale more heartbreaking, yet relatable & resonating to us. The use of perspective also conveys their unspoken fantasies & emotions of what could have been, if olny, and reality. Bravo Damien Chazelle.

I disagree, I think people settle for 'happy enough' rather than true happiness. And I think this scene is meant to illustrate that, in the timeline where they end up together, they did'nt acheive their dreams maybe, but they are truely happy because they are with the person they are meant to be with, at the end of the alternate timeline they are watching the piano and they are so close to eachother and so happy, and they kiss, then it cuts to reality, the looks on both of their faces is a look of sadness and conflict, and she and her actual husband are a good distance apart, in the same room but not together like mia and seb were. That's the tragedy of the movie, we see how happy they couldve been, but they are content being 'happy enough' and that's a sad way to live. Because fulfilling a dream doesnt make you deeply happy, it makes you surface level happy and then your on to your next dream, true love with who youre meant to be with makes you deeply happy.
@perryannemoore5 жыл бұрын
As he plays the piano, it’s like he’s speaking to her, as earlier said in the movie. He’s showing her what it would have been like if they had gotten married, all of her dreams fulfilled, while he was left in the dust. He wasn’t the one playing the piano in his jazz club. He wasn’t the one getting to follow his dream. If they had married, both of them would not have fulfilled their dreams. It shows that they loved each other enough to let each other go. The stare at the end says, “ Hey thanks for letting me live my dream.” The only part of their dreams that they didn’t fulfill were each other. And that’s why this is a masterpiece and one of the greatest modern movies to date.

I didn't feel sad at all when I saw the last scene. If I were in Mia or Sebastian's situation, I'd be very happy, because I could've finally managed to fulfill my dream: to be a filmmaker. And I don't care what I had to give up in order to fulfill such dream, because I'm not willing to commence a love relationship. I don't care what Chazelle meant with La La Land. I totally think it is a huge masterpiece, yet I don't agree with him. I'm fine without love. Pal, we're not all meant to love nor being loved.

@@logans.butler285 That's besides the point though. Obviously the romance isn't what pushed them towards chasing their dreams ,it was about sacrifice and being good to one another. Chasing their dreams was ultimately more important than their love. So they didn't "need love" to succeed, they just needed to believe in themselves and having to go through pain can be a push and the support that may make someone do what they have to do. Only the second time I watched the movie I realised that this alternate ending, these few minutes that show us a perfect scenario where she follows her dream and has him by her side is lala land. It's this utopian reality where she didnt have to sacrifice love or her career and she could have them both. We see it through her eyes and that's why in this scenario Sebastian doesn't open his piano bar but follows her in Paris. The rest of the movie is what happens in real life, where we sadly have to choose one or the other. The title of the film refers to these last couple of minutes. Mia's lala land.

The reason why I LOVE the ending, and the film as a whole, is because it shows that they could've BOTH achieved their dreams without sacrificing their love. It specifically goes back to the turning points in the character's lives where they could've chosen to NOT make the mistakes they did. Specifically Sebastian. After the audition, the pair had another chance at getting back together. They both blew it because they thought they were holding each other back. Had he communicated with Mia about joining Keith's band instead of just assuming, Seb could've moved in to Paris and played Jazz like he always wanted, and then come back to LA and start his own club. Mia made a big mistake by letting Seb hear the conversation with her mother. You don't talk like that as if the person isn't right in front of you. And considering Seb's lunatic breakdown at the dinner, she should've tried harder to calm him down. He's upset and he doesn't know what he's talking about. Moral of the story: you can follow your dreams together. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

I respectfully disagree with this. The alternative ending shows that they could not have achieved their dreams together. What the director is trying to tell, at least in my view, is that love comes and goes, and no matter how hurtful it is, the breakup and moving on are inevitable in living life and following your dreams-the fairy tale stories just dont exist in real life. What the alternative ending shows is not a “good ending” per se; the real ending where the two, as individuals, achieved what they dreamt of, is the “good ending.” But i do agree that lovers should always communicate with each other!

Somehow this connects to every major crossroad we face in life, when one decision closes the door for a possible future timeline. It's like missing the future that just couldn't be, but somehow insists on making itself present from time to time. It's impossible not to get moved by it;

it’s beautifully heartbreaking how the whole movie is set in a dream - like state, but has such a realistic ending. one of the best movies i’ve seen in a while. so good on all levels.

Honestly, in spite of them not ending up together, La La Land has such a great depiction of what love is. The ability to say "I'll always be happy for you, and I'll always want the best for you. Whether or not that means being together."

I’m not much for musicals and dancing in a movie but this ending was so gut wrenching and perfectly acted. We all know what it’s like to lose love for the sake of a “better choice”. And when you are reminded by that sacrifice…it’s painful and nostalgic all the same.

I’ll never forget the ‘five years later’. I said “Nooo” out loud. I knew what was coming. I’ve never been so upset at the end of any film. I tell myself that without meeting each other, they would never have fulfilled their dreams, and in doing so, went on to better things, and were happy, whilst still respecting each other, but it doesn’t help.

The director showed the "What If" at the start is such a smart way to show the actual ending because i think,everybody,deep down ,has that "what if" in their heart . Which make the ending extra sad and relatable.

The scene where they part at the lighthouse is the most important shot in this film ironically due to saying everything by saying nothing. It sets the audience up for the final scene that finally broke us all: the home movie footage of both main characters together achieving their dreams while building a life together instead of choosing differently. That dream life together wasn't impossible and was in fact easily attainable via genuinely healthy, selflessly patiently self-awareness......but it never came to pass, save for their love briefly meeting together and departing forever like two ships passing in the night. Once the home movie footage is over and we see Mia watching Sebastian try not to leave the nostalgic part of the song before the final ending, it forever changes us all in the audience because we ALL hang onto nostalgic memories each for our own personal reasons.

I might be reaching but at 2:53 when the music changes from flutes to a hint of that jazz piano and then a symphony I think they are trying to symbolize that they both got the happy ending they wanted but they had to sacrifice the life they wanted together.

Prior to their last look toward each other, let's not forget the scene: she sits and he starts playing ''their theme'' on the piano, and then SHE starts dreaming at what her life would have been with him instead of her actual husband...she regrets, sadly, her true love she missed out, even though she achieved a successful career and familly life. He is the true love of her life, and the ending does not say anything about his new love life, if ever he found another lover to ''replace'' her, but he is hartbroken as well....They both missed their great love for each other...tears, what a strong ending. Bravo. It reminds me the last scene in ''The way we were'' played by Redford and Streisand in the seventies.

They both got what they were truly needed, but not what were they wanted. Classic "bittersweet" ending, the best you can imagine for a movie like this.

Just watched this today. Man, can't believe this hit me in the core lol. What I loved about this film is how the setting and the aesthetics are displayed almost fantasy like, yet the interactions and what-not, their dreams, the hardships of it all, portray true reality. I also love that their relationship was matured and healthy, that Ryan's character was so supportive of her. Love the last, final look they give one another, an acknowledgement that they both are happy to see one another finally succeed in their respective life paths, even if one is not in the picture. It's bittersweet.

Wow this movie was unbelievably awesome. Most guys will resonate with Sebastian’s loss/pain that you let a good girl go because her wings were meant to fly sky high. The first notes of their song brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. It’s just beautifully written/played with the piano. Fulfilling his dream to keep Jazz music going and paying tribute to Mia by naming the club as she suggested was so awesome. When he played their song after not seeing her in so long that was amazing and tough. You can have fame, fortune, whatever but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t share it with someone you deeply love. Chase your dreams and try to be happy or stay with the girl you love and be with her. This alternate ending had he just kissed her instead of blowing her off really demonstrates how life can go when we have to make tough decisions at crossroads. The scene with Mia almost about to cry when she sees he is sad (he totally misses her soooo much) was excellent acting by Emma and Ryan. Damn, this movie put tears of joy/sadness to my eyes. Great great great great movie 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
