I was disappointed with the ending, but still good game overall.
@midnightapalooza10 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, people have reason to complain about the ending... BUT.... It's totally based off of the film noire genre. *****SPOILERS AHEAD***** See, it's basically required of the genre to have an unhappy ending, Honestly, I loved it, I think it perfectly summed up everything the game was about, and it fit perfectly with the overall tone. It absolutely was not a happy ending, and it probably could have done with a bit more closure, but it really did fit with the game itself in every way. The fact that Phelps died is probably the best that you could have asked for, anyways. What were you expecting, for him to get back together with his wife and live happily ever after? Just doesn't always work that way, and while this was quite cynical of the game to end as it did, it was first and foremost the perfect summation of the film noire genre, as well as a great bookend to an awesome game when you realize that it kind of was happy, in its own sad way.
@illler36210 жыл бұрын
***** I will never understand your thought process. The ending was the only fun part of the game. The whole game was super repetitive, all you did was the same b.s. investigate and interrogate and once in a blue moon you had any action. At least at the end you got to use your gun for once.
@midnightapalooza10 жыл бұрын
***** Already did it one, gotta throw my two cents in one more time... Just to touch on that Red Dead Redemption, the ending to it was absolutely perfect, beyond the "staying true to the genre" which it did do. I said before that as a standard ending, LA Noire isn't the best, but stays true to the genre. That aside, Red Dead was absolutely perfect in and of itself, genre be damned. That ending was spectacular, and there's so much symbolism and subtext beyond the obvious that I strongly encourage you to look into. As for seeing Roy go unpunished, that's sorta the point. When, in real life, was the last time that you saw someone like him get truly punished? He had power and money; those two things will buy you basically anything in real life, and he was easily able to manipulate his way out of trouble. That's how the world works more often than not. Sure, it's great when the bad guy gets punished, but it just doesn't happen. The Noire genre was meant to reflect America's disillusionment in the Modernist era (look it up if you're not familiar), and part of that is realizing that the world ain't fair. Good guys die and bad guys win in reality, and that's what they had to show in this game to stay true to the genre. If you still hate the ending after that, take this away from my rant: You gotta at least recognize the writers for what they did, it takes balls to give an ending that may not be well received, knowing that it wouldn't be ahead of time. They had to point out a fundamental flaw in human society; that being how bad guys really do prosper quite often, and doing the right thing will typically get you killed in situations like that.
@midnightapalooza10 жыл бұрын
***** Oh, sorry, and one last thing... Maybe the fact that you don't like the "hero dies" fashion, as you put it, or the fact that Roy goes unpunished. but perhaps that's the point? Let me ask you, do you have to agree with everything that happens with an ending for it to be objectively good? If everything had a perfect ending, then it wouldn't reflect reality at all, but besides that, what else would you have to think and talk about? We wouldn't have this conversation with a perfect ending, so it had to have succeeded on some level, right? Basically what I'm getting at is, do you have to "like" what happens for an ending to be good? I personally don't think so, and that's sort of the point.

@kallemetsahalme57014 жыл бұрын
Can't really wonder, because this requires a lot more than using a good game engine. Bondi really took faces and bodies as passion because knew the game dies or lives because of it. The newest assassin's creeds and call of duties just don't think it's so important to have skilled people sitting in multimillion dollar face acting studio and I can agree. There aren't many games where faces are the gameplay, yeah there is little shooting and driving, but the only thing that matters "does s/he look guilty"

For example I've been waiting for a decent X-Com sequel for 20 years and it still hasn't happened. I wish people would just buy good games when they come out to keep good producers like this in business. But it usually doesn't take place when the marketing fails. Hype is all that matters apparently, and great games regularly go unnoticed. LA Noire is just the most recent example. Btw awesome review from Joe. He should have given it at least a 9 though. The negatives are so insignificant and the positives so overwhelming. I wish we could have more games like this. Detective sims can be so awesome, and especially when they're this well-made.

Kisses•From •Rosewood I love this game and I don't know why I did not pick it up when it was priced down for SEVEN dollars...But when I got to playing it, I was enjoying it....The ONE MAJOR Gripe I have with this game is the Street Crimes...Yeah they're fun, some were a pain in the ass to get through, especially the ones that involved chasing someone down in a car because the turns can be either too sharp or too narrow to get through which gets you caught on an edge of something and your perp escapes!....But that's not the gripe I am talking about...I am talking about in Free Roam, all street crimes are available again! Free roam should be for the extra stuff you DIDN'T do yet....Not giving you the option of doing them over again! We're they really so fun that we'd want to do them over again? Not really, half of them were a pain to get through...So If I want to just find some collectibles I haven't found yet, then I have to avoid every area that has a street crime available even if I had completed it and came back to free roam...FREE ROAM MEANS TO FREELY ROAM....WHAT WERE THEY THINKING WITH THIS PART?!

It's a damn shame that Bondi no longer exists because of the Australian government removing funding from some both progressive and bigger game developers, not believing that games can benefit Australia's economical future. Fuck me dead, dude. This was a fantastic game that definitely could grow from what we got, especially with the extra additional features like what you mentioned in this review; being able to wonder around and interact with the civilians directly in like a restaurant, or at the movies, a drive-in, or elsewhere. And of course sliding in more consequences for your actions to make the games overall achievements THAT much more rewarding :) However, because of Bondi being stripped of any funding, and Rockstar actually playing a very small roll in it's actual development, and rather more in it's distribution, etc, it's extremely unlikely that we'll ever see a sequel

axe ram Yes! I got absolutely blown away by this, I played this game on a crappy PC a long time ago and, sometimes the facial animations would stutter and freeze during dialogue sequences, but when they unfreeze, they don't go out of sync, it's like the animations are "tied" to the audio.

There I was, New World Anthropology/Archaeology 243 class, 8:45 pm, bored from a hour and 45 minutes of class, another hour and 15 minutes to go. My mind drifts to the case I am currently playing in L.A. Noire. I align the clues, piecing small stuff together one by one. I draw a pattern on my in-class video notes, linking people, places, times and objects, all leads pointing to the killer. I circle him in red several times. My professor tells us to hand in our notes to get credit. Without realizing I had no notes written out I hand it in. Once we have gone to break I realize I had handed in nothing but my L.A. Noire case notes. After the break my professor hands them back wit our scores on them. I get mine and see 20/20. How can this be!? There was nothing on the paper about Clovis culture arrowheads and obsidian tools but rather a web of case notes from L.A. Noire! I look on the back and see she had written, "Good job, you got the right guy. This case took me forever." I look up to see my elderly professor smiling at me. She winks and heads to her computer to enter the grades. BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!!

This is one of my absolute favorite video game narratives because it NAILS the fucking time period, that inter-crossing world of returning veterans still transitioning mentally from the war into the civilian world saddled with the baggage from their previous lives. While society at-large deals with the unforeseen consequences of all the wartime production capacity in the form of contraband goods, surplus drugs and firearms smuggled in from the war.

My biggest issue with LA Noire was the inability to fail a case. No matter how much you fuck up, the case continues on and you eventually get your man. It would have been great to see criminals getting innocent verdicts because you didn't collect enough evidence or been able to potentially arrest the wrong people. Instead the game holds your hand, giving you hints and allowing failure only through death.

This is who I would have casted back then: Stefan Bekowski: Sam Rockwell Rusty Galloway: Michael Madsen Roy Earle: Chris Pine Herschel Biggs: Nick Nolte James Donnelly: Bryan Cranston (He still had short hair at the time) Gordon Leary: James Woods Archie Colmyer: Michael Keaton Leland Monroe: John Goodman Courtney Sheldon: Josh Hutcherson Harland Fontaine: Christopher Walken Curtis Benson: Dennis Quaid Ray Pinker: Tobey Maguire Malcolm Caruthers: James Rebhorn Elsa Lichtman: Diane Kruger

They did. You have many Hollywood landmarks, and the game exudes atmosphere, like Red Dead Redemption. The cars, clothes, mannerisms. It all fits together well.
@papershadow10 жыл бұрын
CrunkKrow The game has a lot of focus on really small details. Tiny mundane objects that are there for flavor even if they don't serve the case. The cars even are accurately damaged by collisions and such. Like, if you get hit in the back right corner, the back right corner is dented exactly as it would be. I think there are even bullet scratches to the cars.

Why this game never got a follow up is just straight up lunacy to me! This was and still is one of the most original games ever made and still looks incredible today..It's mental Rockstar hasn't invested in a sequel. Just like AJ said, they could expand on so many investigation directions and side stories. The animation was and still is so unique. And it's f@cking 11 years old?!?!

The studio that made this shut down due to horrible workplace practices. This game was in development for such a long time that Rockstar spent too much money financing it, and it didn't make the profit they wanted. Hence, no sequel.
@John-996 Жыл бұрын
@@loganbigmoI think thats why they remasterd They could have remasterd Maxpayne 3 for PS4 Or GTA4, RDR may been tough to do as the source code was a mess. But i always found it stange they remasterd this and not their other games. They did a Rockstar collection For Games like Bully, Manhunt, Warriers, MidNightclub and table tennis. So the fact that they decided to only do LA Noire in this Seems like they were testing the waters.

Joe made a great point about picking LIE vs DOUBT, so here's a good way to tell the difference and get it right all the time: Chose doubt when you know the person is lying, (because of a nervous tick, or not looking you in the eyes), but can't prove it. Choose lie when you know the person is lying, and you have evidence to PROVE it. Good luck, gumshoes!

This game is nothing short of GENIUS! This one of those MUST PLAY adventures no gamer should intentionally pass us. Probably the coolest features about this game are: 1) the open space environment, 2) authentic looking faces, motions, and physics, 3) the multiple outcomes with nearly every scene or sequence you play, and 4) very good story writing. The fact that authentic vintage landmarks were replicated in exquisite detail really adds to this genre piece in ways that make me yearn to have lived in LA back in the day.

@RTukka9 жыл бұрын
I'd love it if they made a sequel to this game but had a more robust and consistent set of logic for determining what the correct interrogation responses are. The reasoning that they seem to want you to follow is: If the person isn't making a goofy, sketchy looking face, select truth. If the person is acting fishy, do you have evidence (which you can cite from your notebook) that contradicts what the person is saying? If you do, select lie, if not select doubt. Provided you were thorough in investigating all crime scenes up to the point of the interrogation, you should succeed. However, the game doesn't always follow this logic, which is problematic as it is a core gameplay element that plays a big role in determining your success. Sometimes evidence that seems to strongly contradict what someone says won't prove the lie, but other times you're expected to use evidence that's only thinly related to what the person said, and that doesn't solidly substantiate your claim that the person is lying. Another issue is that you can't fully review evidence after it's been collected, which means that if you don't memorize every line of info on a form before you have the context necessary to tell what's relevant, that piece of evidence is probably not going to help you in your sleuthing because you can't revisit it after you have more info. You can get a brief description of the evidence in your notebook, but that summary doesn't always tell you what you need to know to make the connections necessary to successfully progress the case. These flaws may seem minor, but I found them to be a persistent source of frustration that kept taking me out of the game, and they undermine the main part of the experience that attracted to me the game in the first place. Another issue I had is the contradiction between how Cole Phelps is depicted and how you end up playing him as a consequence of the game way is structured. Phelps is supposed to be a strict by-the-book guy, but if you bother to drive to crime scenes yourself, you're probably going to end up doing reckless stuff because it's encouraged by the game's GTA/arcade-style controls. Similarly, all of missions and side missions that involve fights and gunplay make the game a lot more action-intensive than I necessarily want for my Noire detective story. The nail in the coffin for me is the terrible PC port. The game is locked at 30 frames per second, which I get is probably a constraint imposed by the facial animation system, but it would've been nice if they could've fixed the system so the frame rates would only lock while in dialogue mode and for cutscenes. There are jaggies everywhere and the maximum supported antialiasing option (3X) seems to do absolutely nothing (and I'm someone who is usually satisfied by 2X FXAA). Screen tearing is rampant (nope, no option for v-sync) and even on a fairly strong gaming PC (i5-2500, GTX 670) there was significant stutter at times. And the game doesn't look that great to begin with (though I suspect it would look fine if those technical issues were ironed out). It's sad because there is a lot to appreciate about this game. It's a great concept, the performances are entertaining, the atmosphere is super sweet, and there are some fantastic technical elements, but Rockstar wasn't quite able to bring it all together, or, for me, make the game enjoyable enough to even want to play past the first five or six cases. I do hope that they, or someone else, takes another crack it something like this though.
