I lived in LA back in the mid-60s and spent a lot of time waiting for people to arrive at LAX. There are actually tunnels (under the plane parking areas) connecting the terminals. I could walk from terminal to terminal to terminal. I think they've been blocked off now, but they do still exist.

They're Ads.See the "A" logo in the corner, the video is just a container for advert for the management software the bulk of the video is promoting. The video is just made up of promotional/advertising video made the software product and the airport developers. Its the same model with almost all B1M vids. A lot of airports and cities have autonomous vehicles connecting terminals and suburbs. At SFO, DFW, ATL and EWR, they call them trains, even when they're not on metal tracks. In Sydney, Osaka, and I believe the new line in Istanbul, the autonomous trains are just called the metro. I'll be curious to see how different the new vehicles at LAX are from an autonomous version of the underground system at Mexico City (or some lines in Boston or Seattle, sort of), which also run on rubber tyres.

I thought it was ok, there was lots of construction. I was shocked though that you had to catch a bus to catch a taxi. You walk outside and it isn't clear at all, with not much footpath. I imagine it is flowing better at the moment as there is less flights? I can see how the horse shoe gets really congested. The roads into LAX were really good, coming from Santa Monica. It would be nice to get the shuttle to the terminal from the car rentals, the bus they provided after dropping off the rental car was slow going through the traffic and we were running late, very stressful.
@neb4587

I flew in and out of the international terminal at LAX the other day. I have to say that the arrivals bit is really shit. Way too much walking, with old-fashioned baggage belts etc. Once you’ve got your bags as well, it’s like a 10 minute walk to the exit of the terminal, and it just feels really busy and cramped. It doesn’t get any better when you get outside either - the place is absolute chaos. There are like three ‘unofficial’ drop off and pickup lanes parallel to one another which blocks the traffic. It really is an absolute shambles tbf. Anyway, flying out is a different experience. Departures is in the same place as arrivals which is… weird. Anyway, checkin and security are busy, confusing, and just weirdly laid out. There’s also no fast track at security which is just painful. However once you get through that, the departure lounge is lovely. Suddenly it feels quiet and spacious, its cold and just a really nice place to be. Don’t get me wrong its a horrible airport but I still think its cool :)

This is promising-LAX is definitely the airport I put the most effort into avoiding. Hopefully the upgrade includes improved connections between terminals, while in the security zone, too. It's so easy to accidentally end up on the street and have to go through Security Theatre again.

@Ricardo Casino I actually really like the Atlanta airport. The best part is that there are terminals to help you find the food or shops you want between flights-I really wish all airports had that. LAX has a few, but they don't seem aware of where Security Theatre is, so it's easy to get stuck outside again. That's the part I really hope they fix. … and I didn't really agree the second time you wrote it, either.

Seriously? In the country's 2nd largest city you can't just take a metro underground to at least get downtown. In my city the underground goes to the airport and by that point is overground but elevated to avoid streets sort of like Skytrain in Vancouver. Not sure why so many high population cities like San Jose skip stations when it comes to airports.
@joermnyc
@joermnyc 4 жыл бұрын
zenistic Los Angeles was originally spread out via street car networks, but then when those died (or were killed depending on if you believe the conspiracy involving General Motors), LA became a car-centric place. It took them a very long time just to build the Metro system, and I believe that failed to reach the airport because it was “too expensive” or it was either serve more communities or serve the airport.)
@lwilton
@lwilton 4 жыл бұрын
@@joermnyc The green line (if I recall correctly) was intended to go straight into the airport. It got within a mile or so of the south side of the airport, and the rail ends in the air in the middle of a parking lot. The cab driver's union lobbied City Hall to prevent the connection, arguing that it would cut into their livelyhood. This was before the days of Uber, and it cost almost $50 for a taxi to downtown LA. Uber brought that down to the current $12 flat rate to downtown from the airport. It still costs a fortune to go to most anyplace else. The same thing happened in Las Vegas: the cab driver's union blocked the connection from the monorail to the airport, so you have to rent a car or take a taxi the mile from the airport to the strip.

I live in LA and go to LAX often. It’s genuinely a pain to got there. One of the main reasons there is so much traffic is the busses that take people to the rental car agencies. Every agency has their own bus. The new tram is going to the consolidated rental car facility. This should reduce the number of busses.

Because it was built for maybe a quarter of the traffic load but with absolutely no room for expansion and was based on the "pull up, get you luggage of the trunk, and re-merge into traffic" idea....for every passenger. Now discouraged but that was the theory (and it shows ) and is now a mass of buses that just stop and block lanes to let people out. It is usually about 10-15 min outside of the holidays.

I live in Los Angeles, I've been go to and through LAX for almost 40 years. It has more or less been under constant construction this entire time without significantly changes for passengers. Look inside the Tom Bradley Terminal and see how they position boarding pass machines to block and reroute passengers into jammed crowds. (Yet it is improved from when it was brand new and entering the United States via LAX meant a long walk through what was essentially a narrow low ceilinged basement corridor) When the Green Line Metro was proposed and built 30 years ago, it was promoted as a link to the airport, but the airport commission didn't want to lose parking fees. So it stops a mile away and you have to take a bus. Want to take the Metro from LAX? Look for the "G" Buses because there is NO signage at the airport to direct people arriving to the Metro. I could go on for thousands of words on what a continual boondoggle LAX 'improvements' mostly (but not entirely) are.

"PeopleMover" was a Disneyland attraction from 50 years ago. This LAX people Mover, which AFAIK - is Not Rail, but a Bus on tires - will connect to the (planned) LAX/Crenshaw Metro Rail station near Aviation Bl and Imperial Hwy. I'm assuming this is the same station that currently is a stop for the Metro Green line. The LAX/Crenshaw Metro Rail station is a Metro Rail line to nowhere really, unless one is visiting Inglewood or the Crenshaw district to near USC. The Green line can get one to downtown...with a transfer...the Long way. Takes about 90 min. My guess is once off an incoming flight, you're 3 hours from downtown L.A. using public transit. Back in 1968, when America still had dedicated & conscientious urban planners, there was a plan to replace LAX with a "Superport" in Palmdale, CA. Palmdale could provide land for up to 16 15,000' runways. Palmdale is 65 miles North of Los Angeles. Also planned was a high(er) speed, point-to-point rail system connecting Palmdale to Downtown L.A. This would have been a 50 minute trip. Thus the commute in from 65 miles away would have taken 1/3 the time as a public transit commute from the current LAX to downtown 29 miles away. Additional HSR rail lines would have serviced other major areas of L.A. like Century City/Beverly Hills, the Valley, and the South Bay. Also at this time, then _Councilman_ Tom Bradley was the leading proponent of a metro rail system for Los Angeles. Both ideas were scrapped by auto lobbyist.
@gregorygladkov5109
@gregorygladkov5109 4 жыл бұрын
Your first paragraph about the people mover going to the Metro Green line stop and connections to downtown is largely incorrect. The people mover would connect to the Metro Crenshaw line at Aviation and 96th Street. The Crenshaw line will connect to the E Line (Expo) at Expo/Crenshaw, which goes directly to both Santa Monica and downtown LA. The Crenshaw line is definitely not a metro line "to nowhere". It will provide a key north/south connection between the current C Line (Green) and the E Line (Expo) and will be further extended to Hollywood, connecting to both the D Line (Purple) and B Line (Red). That section will be incredibly useful and will pass through some of the region's largest job centers and entertainment hubs (e.g. Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Miracle Mile, West Hollywood). Even the section currently under construction will be near the future NFL stadium and the Forum. While your argument about there not being direct connections to downtown LA is valid, you should back it up with correct evidence.
@theexmann
