I was on the 1st MT women's fire crew just out of high school and flown to fight fires in CA in 1970. I was shocked that a fire could grow to 250K acres, now it seems routine. We had Blackfeet crews, Mexican and Hotshot crews. No amount of water can stop those Santa Ana winds out of the desert; armchair experts need to see with their own eyes the devastation and have some compassion for fellow Americans. When there's s fire like that, houses burn down and faucets can melt off. This leaves open pipes. If there's enough of that, water pressure is reduced. Add to that many, many fire fighters tapping hydrants. This isn't a problem for normal fires, but for these events, the system isn't designed. Water pressure drops. It's just that simple. There's no consistency, there's no one to blame. It's not reasonable to design and implement a system for an event you can't even understand until it happens. Now, they have enough information to upgrade the systems, and I'm sure they will. But calm down people. You do not have information and you are not the arbiter of blame. These people need to just shut up already.

I'm Australian and after the devastating fires we had a couple of years ago the Murdoch Media spread rumors that they were all started by arsonists. After an *OPEN public enquiry,* of the 30+ fires investigated NONE were found to be the result of arson, but a couple were found inconclusive. That didn't stop people like Tomi Lauren screeching about "Australia's arson problem" live on air. If you want to see what Australia had to put up with go look at a video titled "Bushfire arson myth debunked | Media Watch" and see what Tomi Lauren said (starting around 9:29 with Tomi starting around 9:45). That episode of Media watch was a follow up to an earlier one titled "Bushfires and Murdoch misinformation | Media Watch"

I live in LA. People are making this more complicated than it needs to be. We had record rainfall in years past which creates overgrowth of brush. The best you can do is cut back overgrowth and shutdown power in high risk areas because the winds were insane. Power lines were going to get knocked down no matter what.

You can bring in goats. You can fix the water infrastructure. You can actually have the firemen out in the field in anticipation. You can have the mayor of the city actually be in the city. You can give the fire department the funding it needs. You can investigate new technologies and encourage people to buy them for their homes. And the list goes on and on and on. These fires never should have gotten out of hand as much as they did. You see stories of people stopping their homes from burning down. You see Rick Caruso's development not burn down. You see the Getty building not burn down. These weren't just lucky occurrences. The buildings didn't burn down because they had water and plans to combat the fires. Yes, it was mismanagement. There is no defending what happened. People need to be replaced with those who actually care to do the actual job.

There are too many chiefs who were terrible firefighters and called “great chiefs”. It would be nice to hear what the firefighters who served under her command have to say.

Letting "Homeless people" set fires isn't working. It's nice to feed them and allow them to camp outside, but at some point you need to be an adult and stop the madness. @altrevino3135 People in the fire department have said off the record that the homeless start a lot of these fires but it's not said officially because of politics. So you can say they are both related. But they have mismanaged homelessness by creating incentives to increase the homeless population with their policies. And they also mismanaged state resources by wastefully spending them in pet programs when the money would have been better spent elsewhere. The state leadership has held the average Californian hostage with their policies and bureaucratic system. And even when people try to vote them out they cheat and manipulate the system to maintain dominance. It's an absolute disgrace it has come to this, but we will not relent. We demand accountability and want our state back.

Let’s talk about better construction and placement of homes. That’s what we do have control over. Every third house had a twenty to 40 thousand gallon pool ten feet from the back door. Can anyone tell me why we can pump water up to the roof to heat the pool, but not to irrigate the roof and outer walls during a fire. The pools are all sitting there perfectly now next to piles of ash.

Not just 100 MPH winds but EXTREMELY low humidity in perennial droughty conditions in hilly terrain (heat rises and who is ever on top is fu.....ed). Then add in large populations who may not know much about really basic fire prevention. This makes it nearly impossible to stop fires like this. Just like living in Florida, you have to wonder whether these are places people should be living.

Just a comment on real estate post-fire though, I think we’re already starting to see private equity and other real estate investment firms salivating at the prospect of snapping up all these properties on the cheap. The area around the Easton fire covers historically black and Hispanic neighborhoods, so they’re a prime target. Even the Palisades, which has a reputation of being a very pricey, new Beverly Hills type area, is not a monolith. The parents of one of my good friends bought their house and have lived there since the 80s when it was on the outskirts of the city before it was cool. Their house is GONE now, and I don’t know what they’re going to do. And they’re certainly not the only family in that situation. I’m pro market and pro capitalist, but capitalism works best when there’s a fair playing ground. I really believe we must have guardrails to ensure that the aftermath of this tragedy does not just accelerate asset accrual to the super rich and just worsen wealth inequality.

If you MUST carry insurance, they can charge anything they want and they most certainly do.
