Weatherman/meteorologist here. In this particular instance, I’d argue the LA fires were mostly a meteorological event, and not necessarily a direct cause-and-effect from climate change. The Santa Ana winds that caused them are a well-understood phenomenon in this part of the world, and have been around for a very long time. The winds from it were extremely severe, gusting to 80-100 mph at times - But that’s not necessarily from the fact that Earth is now hotter. I’d argue the outcome would have been equally likely in either an industrialized or pre-industrialized world. It’s possible that the ongoing drought in Southern CA could have been exacerbated by climate change, and thus exacerbated the fire risk. But I’d hesitate to draw a direct cause-and-effect in this specific instance. LA is already a desert. And I think it’s sparked so much conversation mostly just because of how high-profile the neighborhoods are that were destroyed. That is NOT to say that climate change is not leading to bigger and more catastrophic fires around the world, because it absolutely is. There are fires that have happened over the last 5-10 years that are much more concerning from a climate change perspective - Specifically, in the boreal forests in Canada and Siberia, and the tropical rainforest in the Amazon. Those fires would have been extremely less likely if the Earth hadn’t heated up by ~1.2-1.3°C on-average, as it already has. So it’s relevant for some if not most wildfires, but not as relevant for the LA fires, I’d say.

Andrew Ross Sorkin = must watch guest. Always great to have smart, reasonable people. I never realized he was Canadian but that may help explain some of his more reserved, non-sensationalized approach.

Good show! I like Mr. Sorkin's take on the "Trump Trade." Lot's of irrational expectations, especially in crypto. And BTW, Bitcoin backed loans are back so here we go again. Serviced by completely unregulated automated smart contracts, no credit score required, no minimum payments, low LTV ratios, automated adjustable interest rates. What could go wrong? Love to see a show on this.

Good on you, Ed. It is climate change. Scott, you sound kind of like the NRA after a school shooting: “now’s not the time.” Of course our first responders deserve praise; now is the perfect time to discuss actual causes. We can do both.

Guys, when you are given options of how much to tip on a screen, there is usually a choice for a custom tip. So if you don’t want to provide a 20 or 30 percent tip, then just customize your tip (obviously you’re not obligated to provide a tip). Just throwing that out there in case people were unaware.

Related to the tipping section: Trump wants to have no tax on tips, so that he and other business people will be paid a "gratuity" from their companies. Now that it's a gratuity, no taxes on it.

When I was a kid in the 70s, 10% was standard and 15 was for excellence. It shifted to 15% baseline probably mid-late 80s? Not sure. Last 20 years it feels like 20% has become near-standard expectation.

Serious question for Scott: does he believe that rich people, by virtue of their being wealthy, have more of a right to burn climate destroying fossil fuels than the rest of us? Has he ever tried to calculate how many tons of CO2 his air travel is responsible for in any given year?

Ed is right to bring up climate change. Prevention is the best option in preventing casualties. Yes, the people there obviously need help. But we can't stop beating the climate change drum. Eventually, people will have to succumb to the inevitability (if we continue on this path), which is climate change. If it were truly about preventing casualties, combustion engines would be banned in urban areas. Poor air quality kills millions of people every year. How many others suffer from respiratory illnesses directly caused by air pollution? This isn't a political issue. It's fucking reality. Love the podcast, and Scott has been a really positive impact in my life. But I think he has this stance slightly wrong. Sincerely, A radical moderate

A+ Effing Job at protecting lives? Tell that to the 25+ families (so Far) that have been destroyed and lost loved ones due to the incompetence of the California government. The government, both state and local knew the risks and chose to not prepare. In the case f the Mayor, she decided to not even be in the state.
@nickalonso12272 сағат бұрын
There’s been 225,000 wildfires in California over the last 30 years 95% of them were caused by unattended campfires, power lines, cigarettes, arson. Although recent dryer conditions may make these fires larger than before the cause is more than likely completely avoidable and are really a result of negligence not climate on its own

But now that he's successfully living in another country, he carries the Democratic Party's water with their irrational policies. I call on Scott to do some actual research on what is happening in California and speak truthfully about it.
