In 1984 they went down to 9. Even tho they don't exhibit the California Condor at the LA Zoo.....if people have a chance to go, please go, you are supporting the program without knowing it.

When I was in middle school my family and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon, where I saw these beautiful birds soaring above me. I immediately recognized it was a condor and the feeling of honor was unforgettable. I never imagined I would see them and am still so touched. Still waiting to see a Florida panther and I have lived here my whole life :(

A lot of them hang out near the Grand Canyon. All of them are visibly tagged which speaks to the monumental effort these folks have gone through. It is a truly impressive bird, and I am so glad to have gotten to see them in the wild. It's all thanks to the efforts of people like these.

I share the reporters sentiment and remember the early 80s when they suddenly realized DDT almost killed all of the condors. There was so much awareness around it. I remember a cartoon about the condor came out and it was magical. Definite imprint in my memory. So glad there's been people diligently trying to repopulate the species.

It's a shame that there are so many people that are against accredited zoos. Zoos are the last lifeboats remaining for many species as they are becoming critically endangered across the world. The number one threat by far is loss of habitat, caused by world human overpopulation, which means we take more land for farming, energy production, mining, wood products, industrialisation, and housing, while creating more pollution.

I saw one coming home from Big bear mountain to San Diego Ca last year, it was eating roadkill rabbit but I didn’t know what kind of bird at the time it was but by the size of it and it’s distinctive look I just knew it wasn’t an ordinary bird and I just remembered telling myself seeing this must be rare, and I know I saw a Condor. Im glad I got to see one in the wild

I think I saw a California Condor, today, in Necedah Wisconsin's Buckhorn Park. It's wingspan was the largest I have ever seen in my life. Luckily, I was driving ( home) in my car. I remember the black with white striped wings, but, the birds sheer size was scary, to say the least.

When people learn to love a species they will want to save it, and this wonderful bird who plays such a vital role in our ecosystem is definitely worthy of being saved! Now I urge the banning of lead ammo throughout all of this majestic bird's range as California Condors inhabit both California and Arizona, the more we fight to preserve a species as beautiful as the condor the more secure its future will be!

Does anyone know if Great Horned owls are an invasive species in California? Being as I heard they don't build nests but steal them, could they also perhaps be doing that to condors and killing/eating their babies/eggs? I live in Taft, CA & my mom & I as well as my dad(both raised in or around Kern county CA) before he passed away don't recall there ever being great horned owls in fact, in my childhood I recall my parents in their confidence to let my cat outside often, or is it maybe we just weren't paying attention to our surroundings well enough? Do condors build their own nests? Now and even as I am typing this I can hear a great horned owl not far from outside my window & I live right in the middle of this teency tiny lil' crap shoot of a city,(there aren't any sky rise buildings here nor were there, imo but there are still lots of big tall trees now for owls to roost in, that being as I live in a desert valley I'm betting those trees weren't even here about 100-200 years ago).

Release should include the maintenance of a feed station in that locale to supplement their diet and ensure the condors get adequate nutrition. Put a calf carcass out every 10 days or so. Humans have destroyed their food chain, and to release well fed condors into the wild as if this will increase their numbers is selfishly and irresponsibly short-sighted and ignorant. You can assume at least half of the birds you invested so much into developing to the point of release, will die from starvation. You boast how many birds you released as if they are all doing fine, and they are STRUGGLING at best. Go the extra distance to improve their food find in the wild. This will ensure the condor population builds on itself and grows. Then you will deserve bragging rights.

500k a year for birds. That's pretty effed up if you're into basic human rights.
