I think, the quickest way to change this trend is to make the hype of content of movie from start, even the mass masala movie pull off audience by making hype from initial stage to release, content oriented movies majorly come and go without making people aware of it, yes, all this could be costly but this is what it is. Even lapata ladies released and i was unaware of it.

Not actually, these movies are made for an unique mindset of cinema people. Very few people go to theatre to enjoy such critical story based movies. Most of the people are not of that mindset. They go to theatre mostly for having temporary fun , a good laugh or enjoy some actions. For me I rarely go to theatre, sometimes on a date. Gotta say these aren't for that occasion. A horror or comedy is much more preferred. But u get the gist.

Great review bro but I think a big factor why Laapata Ladies didn't work financially lies in the way distribution and production studio behind it. Laapata Ladies comes under the banner of Aamir khan productions which has a great track record of releasing content oriented films. Kiran Rao being a good director must had the leverage of negotiating with ott platforms and film distributors for the release but for some reason I think they didn't. I think its a collective problem which involves all audiences, makers and distributors.

The reason is HIGH TICKET PRICE in Multiplex, most of the Audience comes from middle class, and while choosing which movie to watch, most of middle class wants to go with a big celebrity name or banner. There mindset is simple if i have 2 thousand to spend on a movie date, most of people will spend it on a senseless salman movie, they will never go anywhere near to a content driven movie.

There is another difference in my view, in theatre people want to see larger-than-life projects (sound effect, costumes, locations ) , laapata ladies and all India rank are project which we as audience comfortable watching on small screen. Somewhere producer need see which project will be more accepted on which platform as its their risk. Laspata ladies has gained soo much because it got released on OTT but if it was released on TV it would have flopped Another example : the Kapil show is again tanked on OTT.

It's sad that they're not getting that recognition in theaters, but at least they have some space now. Not like some years back when they went totally unnoticed, and after years, you'd watch that movie by accident and be like, 'Wow, what a movie it was,' for example, 'No Smoking.' Lapata Ladies movie is no doubt good but why didn’t they give credit to the original film, Ghoonghat ke pat khol by Ananth Mahadevan, from where they stole the idea of it and even copied some scenes as well. Thats a shame! They removed the original film from youtube first before releasing their own.

One major problem is in this country is that purchasing power is in hands of man or wahi bikta hai jo aadmi dekhna chahta hai ye bhi ek bada reason ki women centric movies pit jaati hai qki is desh ke aadmiyon ko mini skirt mai item song karti ladkiya hi screen par achhi lagti hai baaki esi movies ko femenist propaganda keh ke hata diya jata hai bhale hi wesa juch ho n.

The reality is as it is until we watch movies for the story. The hunt in the dialogue delivery instead of seeing who is cast in the film or who is performing. If we focus on the story, I think that movie will make more money than the others. I realize the industry has star power, but we have to come to the basics. Remind yourself it is a movie. Judge the acting, the script, the performance, not the status of the person doing it.

Shuru se Crime Patrol dekhoge toh you will realize how those guys have been making a case against nepotism far longer than Bollywood. Crime Patrol had excellent no-name actors. In fact, they are still amazing at that except for in the Dial 100 version, which is more like Saavdhaan India and has much less work going into it while Crime Patrol Satark continues to maintain the high standard.

Big screen is an immersive experience which inherently makes audiences expect a spectacle. I highly doubt whether any of the scenes from the laapataa ladies would have really made more impact from the big screen experience. Social commentary films like laapataa ladies should be direct to OTT which would make it’s reach even better (to rural audience which truly needs to watch it) compared to costly and limited theatres and would not face box office pressure which would discourage film studios from investing on such projects in future.

Both of these movies got a Netflix release only because of the producers and directors involved in these movies : Aamir khan productions and Varun Grover (who has written sacred games for Netflix). Otherwise, if it sold have been a small time director and producer, these movies wouldn't have got any recognition

I tried to watch Laapata Ladies on Netflix and stopped after just 15 mins into the movie. Can't believe people are giving it good ratings. 0.5/5 stars or 1/10 star from my side. The movie did not have any groundedness and neither did it gave any vibes of 90s/00s. We were not that regressive in 90s/00s like how the movie showed. Leave 90s/00s, even earlier we were never regressive

I ended up watching the full movie today as I heard it's ending is good. I loved it's ending and it made me emotional but there is Hinduphobia and too much of stereotyping in the movie. I will give it about 2.5 stars out of 5 or about 5 stars out of 10 just due to it's ending. Also our villages are not as shown in the movie. Performances in the movie were good. Also the 1.5 hours felt like a torture and only last 30 mins were good and would have been better if the guy who was accused of killing his wife had been arrested Won't recommend the movie to anyone and better to avoid the movie. Also if anyone watches the movie then they can see why elite critics love the movie

Keeping the nepo debate aside, I am fed up dealing with traffic and pollution as a city person. I don't feel like going out for a movie anymore. I would rather do something else if I am leaving home. Reaching to and from theatre takes around a couple of hours of your day these days. Any trailer I see - I think I will watch the movie later online. Even shopping I don't do offline anymore post covid. I see most people act this way and I have a feeling it's not going to change in future. To pull people to theatres these days it takes someone like SRK, Salman or Ranbir - and that's it there's no one else.

I believe it’s the larger than life cinema that has a potential of getting the required numbers at the BO post pandemic, nothing wrong with that - new times new requirements. But it’s hard to know movies like Laapaata Ladies don’t do any significant numbers despite being the best product to come out of the Indian film industry. I think it’s the majority of people who just take such movies for granted - arre ott pe aa jayega 2 hafto main attitude is the main problem. Still I hear majority of people complain about so called “Bollywood” not making good movies or meaningful movies anymore. Banate toh hai par dekhta koi nahi, larger than life action movies do the numbers irrelevant of the content, why will the makers and producers invest their hard work, time and effort into making anything else other that such action movies - at the end it’s a business and charity main movies nahi banti.
