One of Impossible Foods’ competitors added hemoglobin to their meatless meat, and Impossible sued. The European Patent Office revoked one of their patents late last year, and a Delaware Court is currently deciding the fate of a U.S. patent. We’ll see how this all unfolds! dockets.justia.com/docket/delaware/dedce/1:2022cv00311/78256 register.epo.org/application?tab=doclist&number=EP14737766&lng=en

In theory, it should produce a meat substitute with the texture and taste of meat, but i highly doubt it.

Why would anyone not consider a spider or human meat? Meat is what animals are made of. I personally would also consider cultured meat as meat.

Your logic eludes some people. Some people don't even are if the fake meat would be exactly identical to real meat in every way, they still want real meat because they WANT something to die. Humans are objectively the worst. 😠

I cannot believe that you did not try mixing the two types of "meat" to see if the taste and the texture would be closer to "meat"

Meat imitation products have gotten a lot better recently. I think having them at fast food places has been a bit of a watershed moment for them. However I'm always a little amused that we Americans can't seem to imagine a vegetarian diet without some 1:1 analog for meat. Most cultures and countries have have been making food without animals for thousands of years, but in the US food consumption is shaped as much by advertisers and industry lobby groups as it is by culture and history.

We shouldn’t call it meat. If vegetable protein based substitutes want to have a chance at all, they need to stand on their own merits, not be a worse version of actual meat. That’s why I respect the humble slab of tofu: it’s what it is.
@richmahogany1

That's one way to look at it. The other way is that the reality is the bulk of the population eats meat, and if you're trying to convert them you should do it in a way they're more likely to accept. I looked through my fridge at all my various meat substitutes and most of them don't actually say "plant meat" or anything like that. They'll say plant sausage or plant burger but don't actually mention it as an alt-meat. Even the company name "beyond meat" could be interpreted as another way of saying "not meat" as opposed to a particular type of meat.

I don't see what's so hard about the definition. If it comes from an animal it's considered meat whether it's a spider leg a slug cow chicken cat dog whatever It's considered meat. If it comes from the fungus kingdom it's not considered meat If it comes from the plant kingdom it's not considered meat either. If these plant-based substitutes for beef add something that came from an animal it's considered a meat product Not meat.

Yeah, that's likely how it will end up being labelled, just like how "American cheese" has to be labelled "cheddar-STYLE cheese-PRODUCT".

"human flesh" GASP..."Relax, it's just flesh of someone who doesn't look or think like us, so it's okay that we took their life from them unnecessarily" The fact that it wasn't human doesn't change the offense. You need a justification for taking their life from them, making a video, or getting food from them when you could have eaten something else that isn't sentient, isn't a justification. If they were threatening your life or if you had no other option are justifications. I do appreciate this video being pro blurring the lines of these meat definitions, though.

Jezus freaking christ these youtube creators are treating us like kindergarten children. Hey did you know that words can be used in a literal sense as well as a figurative sense? That's why we can refer to the 'meat' or even the 'flesh' of an orange, or even the 'meat' of an issue. Hey did you know that the watery stuff inside a coconut has been called 'milk' for centuries?
@I.____.....__...__
@I.____.....__...__ Жыл бұрын
Um, I think you missed the point. Did you watch to the end? He clarified that this will end up being a legal thing. Did you know that "American cheese" isn't cheese? Those cheese slices are "cheddar-STYLE cheese-PRODUCT". Words matter and the law cares.
@BarryPiper
@BarryPiper Жыл бұрын
@@I.____.....__...__ My comment is in response only to the title of the video, which seems to take issue with the figurative or creative use of the word 'meat'. As to your other questions, I teach food science so yes I'm familiar with labeling requirements for foods. American cheese is certainly cheese as most people usually use the word. Legally it must be labeled "processed cheese" or "cheese product", depending on the amounts of cheese blends and fat that end up in the final product. But this is my whole point - people are going to decide what they want to call 'meat', 'milk', or 'cheese' even though it may irritate the occasional KZbin creator.

And? 🤨 That's not the gotcha you think it is. 🙄 Humans have made balls of plant materials long before they made balls of meat. Besides, simulating a food by substituting ingredients doesn't mean they actually want that ingredient, it means they DON'T want that ingredient but like the food as a whole. Duh. I guess you'd say that people who eat fat-free ice-cream really want fat or people who want gluten-free bread want gluten and so on. 😒

I don't think the appeal of tasting like meat is for the sake of existing vegetarians. It's more intended for encouraging carnivores to replace some of their meat intake with a source that won't fart its way to an environmental apocalypse
