Beasts confused yet amazed reaction to eating 50+ year old food is what a lot of us who got into collecting older MRE's feel. For the most part, it's been very rare that I've come across something bad in my quest to eat some of the oldest food I had ever eaten, though I take great care on checking the quality of something before trying it. Of course I can't come close to Steve1989's eating Civil War hardtack or British meat from 1911~, but I've eaten a few Gulf War era stuff of my own that tasted great. You don't have to worry about Botulism at all if the food has been freeze dried, the big B mostly pops up in canned goods that pressurize or were not sealed correctly. Generally you should never consume older canned food, though it is completely possible for them to be fine even being from WW2 if they've been stored correctly, but it's a 1 in a million chance to find an older ration that has actually been stored (ie refrigerated/frozen) correctly for its ENTIRE lifetime. And for the record, Steve1989, the greatest MRE collector & archiver, has actually gotten Botulism TWICE. But both from MODERN MRE's! The guy has eaten stuff from nearly every single decade of the 20th century & even that Civil War era hardtack, yet ironically it was the 21st century food that got him ill. IIRC it was from an Eastern European and a Chinese ration. Those Chinese rations man... don't EVER order one if you want to get into MRE's. Literally the worst on the planet. As for the best, that would be the French rations. The quality of those things are like the quality you'd see from an average restaurant, which is an insane feat for food that can store for years if not DECADES as long as it's stored correctly.

The phenomena is actually very simple. The package doesn't allow air to come inside, therefore the molecules in the food have no atoms to react with and that's why it stays the same for so many years. If there is no dangerous bacteria in the food, it should be safe to eat. Edit: Have a good day
