The stuff my parents bought me as a teen were similar to what you used... it was horrible. First, my mom got me this neutrogena scrub thing that literally took the skin off my nose. Then my dad gave me some sort of witches' brew made from "natural ingredients" that was full of those scary walnut shell pieces. It was like rubbing a box grater on my skin. It's a miracle I lived through it.

You’re spot on with the picking and mirrors! I used to pick so much more when I was at university and was stuck studying in my room for long periods. For me niacinamide has really helped reduce the amount of spots I get, but also fades the red marks from spots much much faster than without.

I started changing my pillowcase regularly, I can confirm that it works SO WELL. I used to have pretty severe acne all the time, figured out to change my pillowcase more often, and the acne is noticeably reduced. I got two prescription topical ointments as a teenager and they were terrible. Like, I guess they worked, but they burned my skin so badly I didn't want to use them anymore. So then imagine you have skin that already feels like it's burning and thin but also you live in Florida (where the sun beats down heavily on your face every day).

I have a huge problem with PICKING! This is what causes and exacerbates my facial skin problems more than anything. It comes from and anxiety and dopamine place, I definitely feel the addictive and compulsive urges associated with it. I found that acne patches help except for when... i pick them off! And of course therapy helps to be more aware of the behavior but still.. It would be awesome to see a whole video about this!

The biggest difference for my skin was washing it in the shower, not sink. I double cleanse using a hydrofil oil followed by a gentle cleanser. But when I used to wash it by the sink, I didn't clean my skin properly. Now, I put on a shower cap and wash my face in the shower. I also recently added a hydrating toner. My active anti acne ingredient is a lotion with salicylic acid.
@DelightfulGem5 жыл бұрын
I find that keeping myself adequately hydrated, eating green veges and avoid sugar, diary, processed, fried food/products help to keep the acne at bay. I also do daily double cleanse in the evening. Once a week, I'll do exfoliation to keep my skin thoroughly clean.

I also have super acne-prone skin - the pill used to clear it, but after stopping it came right back. Really appreciate this vid Michelle. I constantly heard that it was bad to pop pimples, and I was like "...but I'm removing the gross bit." Nobody ever gave a good explanation, so I figured people were being motivated by finding it gross, and just... kept doing it but figured I'd better not tell anyone. Your explaining the actual reasoning, and how it can be done well, actually makes sense. I've ordered some lances, and I'll make sure to do it properly from now on. I can see how the way I did it before would help sometimes, and make it worse other times. You're killing it at science & health communication, big fan.

Interesting that you didn't share diet as something to look into when dealing with acne. Cutting dairy and wheat out of my diet has helped me get rid of acne and canker sores respectively. Good stuff!
@fishscales28Ай бұрын
That can help but for some people it may not be feasible as dairy has protein and calcium and whole wheat has carbohydrates and a bit of protein more than white rice does. Also she is not a nutritionist she is a chemist so she may be more familiar with skincare than nutrition. And besides in my opinion people should eat a healthy diet and if they need dairy and/or wheat in order to do this (or no access to alternative foods) then they may need to choose getting better nutrition over getting less breakouts.

Omg, I saw the history of my life in this video. On my teenage years I didn't have much acne, though. It got out of hand when I was 21 and started taking contraceptive pills. I started getting deep cystic acne on my jawline and chin. It's funny because I had no idea it was related to the pill. In any case, it took me 5 years to figure out what was happening and what could make it better. I switched to a ketogenic diet, reduce the intake of dairy and avoid stress (stress breaks me out so much!). Regarding skincare, cleansing oils make a difference in minor acne, such as blackheads.

Thank you for making this! I've got hormonal acne, and I've tried all your tips, except the mirror trick (I'll do this!) and your last point. I take a form of birth control that doesn't specifically target acne, but I'm thinking of switching to Yaz (expensive) or Diane, as suggested by Dr David Lim on his channel. I can't use a lot of topicals because my skin is super sensitive and most of the acne turns into red raw sores before a whitehead appears. They are deep, painful and further under the skin. Vit C makes my skin so angry and red. My skin also hates all types of moisturiser, so I usually have to use a regular cleanser then lightly massage a cream cleanser in to keep mildly hydrated. I can't even use aloe vera gel without breaking out. It's madness. I'm hoping a change in meds will be the ticket. Thanks again!
