As much as I hate inheritance tax as a point of principle I have a very simple solution - the 20% inheritance tax is only triggered should the generation taking over from the previous generation look to sell the farm. If they don’t sell then they shouldn’t have to pay any inheritance as they are never realising the asset cash value.
@cupra2Jock.6 күн бұрын
I'd lower that to 5% and I could agree with you. To counter the 'land loophole' for rich people. I'd say they have to prove they have a FARMING or AGRICULTURAL etc business in order to have the 5% tax, if not, make it 20%.
@JP-rv6hg6 күн бұрын
@ exactly! Very easy to prove that. It still should be 0% - ROI on farming land is terrible. BUT we need food independence so let’s not kill the hand that feeds us.
@dertery87246 күн бұрын
@@JP-rv6hgThere has to be a way to stop the wealthy from buying up farmland to avoid IHT, not least because it pushes up the value of farmland and leads to the very poor returns on investment we see. However I agree with you about those genuinely farming and passing on farmland. There is a system called ‘rollover relief’ ensuring farmers don’t have to pay capital gains tax when passing on their farmland when alive unless it is sold; the same should apply to transfers on death - IHT is only charged if the land or assets are then sold.
@iancrowson29886 күн бұрын
Why do you hate inheritance. If you have worked hard all your life, paid your taxes why cannot you pass on your wealth tax free to your kids, and grandkids. Why else would you bother. You might as well go down to the pub, sign on and not work again. Do you not realise that if you own even a modest home in the south, and are not married you stand to lose it if your partner dies. £375k does not go very far. Scrap inheritance tax, end of.

The only light i can see from all this is that the farmers just sit tight for 4 years as it's a guarantee that Labour will be gone, and hopefully, this "land grab" will be abolished. Check what you are buying at the supermarket and buy British. I would urge everyone to buy from a farmers market if you can. It really isn't that expensive, and i guarantee you it is a damn sight fresher and tastier. (It is winter now, so challenge yourself to go to a farmers market this weekend and buy some beef, Carrott, parsnips, swede, etc, and make a big pot of stew. It is tasty, good value, and a lot healthier than a poxy ready meal).

I don’t know who she is, but to be fair, her empathy did seem genuine. Not that it helps farmers. If the left believes IHT is fair and equitable, why don’t they stand for election on a foundation of taxing ALL estates, from the smallest to the largest, at maybe 20%, with the entry threshold at £100? A lot of people seem to be very much in favour of IHT, so presumably this would be a huge vote winner?
