“It’s not about Palestine. It’s football hooliganism.”
Labour MP Naz Shah responds to a viral video of her being confronted by a Bradford West resident while out campaigning for the general election.
In the video, the unidentified man calls Shah a “genocide supporter” and a “Zionist” for refusing to stand down from the Labour Party amid criticism over comments its leader Keir Starmer made in support of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Shah has been outspoken on Palestinian issues in the past, and in November resigned from her position on the Labour shadow cabinet to vote for a ceasefire, breaking away from her party’s line. She is now standing as a Labour candidate in the Bradford West seat she’s held since 2015.
In an interview with The Big Picture Podcast, she says that she believes the anger over Gaza was felt by many in her community, but the attacks on her and other Labour candidates were unfair and counterproductive.
