Ree Jones i would get sick of it if someone broke the bluray disc up and made me eat it. Even after vomiting and crapping out my last few pints of blood as the disc tears my intestines i'd still insist on 'underground' to be played at my funeral. not just for the fact it's a great movie but for the irony.

I actually just learned that the owl in the opening credits is the first the first attempt ever to create a photorealistic animal with CGI in a feature length film. I was kinda blown by the revelation, since this is one of my favorite childhood films, and now I'm studying 3D animation, heading for a professional career. Must be fate.

This was one of my favorite movies when I was little. It came out in 86 which would have made me 5 when it came out. It's a shame that him and another great actor Alan Rickman died only a few days apart from each other. I loved Rickman as professor Snape on Harry Potter and when he was the voice of God in Dogma. CGI Owl... Wow. Back in 1986 there were only 3 computers in the world capable of doing that; well, that I know of at least. I'll bet that was a Cray II project. Sad how I never appreciated that when I was younger. Now it's nearly everywhere. People did so much with their minds and limited technology... Looking to the analog for everything. So, with affordability and accessibility at our fingertips, why has creativity worsened? My guess is laziness. Thank God we have gems like this movie to remind us what REAL movie making was all about!

The first credit says Lucasfilm, so there may have been some early-days ILM or Pixar talent involved there. They'd certainly have the budget and equipment for it if anyone did. As a kid, the owl creeped me out because it was the first CGI I had ever seen - I was 5 or 6 when the film came out, and I saw it a year later. I'd never seen animation move like that. Today, I'm impressed with how well it animates, even with how rough the modeling looks.

First fully-rendered "realistic" animal in a film - for the mid 80s that's pretty incredible. This movie is timeless, it's beautiful, it's perfect, I want it to STAY that way... we don't need remakes or reboots of this. If they wanna do ANYTHING with this IP - let it be a canonical, in-universe story that compliments this, doesn't undo or detract from this, doesn't try to one-up it... just maybe an adjacent Labyrinth-universe story perhaps. I love the world, the design, but I'd insist they really make it a point to keep to the practical-leaning effects and puppetry to retain that humble, home-grown feeling.
