A classic kids movie that was unfairly maligned by critics when it first came out. When Jim Henson passed away, the world became a lesser place. Fun Fact: In the beginning of the iconic "Magic Dance" scene, Toby is seen crying while surrounded by numerous goblins. In reality, the baby actor Toby Froud wasn't the least bit scared by any of the puppets and animatronics used. They had to wait until he was tired and wanted to nap to film the musical number.

19:09 Jareth is the most sensitive and complex villain of any children’s movie. Even watching this as a child I was haunted by his sadness. He’s the king of the goblins but he’s not a goblin himself. I feel like he takes unwanted children not just out of malice.

As soon as I get a raise I’m joking your patrion 😭 As for the bad sister moment, it’s her half brother between her dad and step mom. She’s like 14-16 and feels like a built in baby sitter plus she’s a theater kid so there’s some extra drama. So she gets bad and wishes him away but doesn’t ACTUALLY want him gone! She just meant for a second! Now she has to rescuer him. Even though she’s a frustrated teenager, she’s not going to let her baby brother become a goblin!

This has been my go-to movie for 35 years and I'm still learning things I never knew about it. For example, right at the end, the photo Sarah takes down from her mirror is of her birth mom (who is still alive in the movie) and her mom's new boyfriend, who in the photo is David Bowie. So Jareth takes the form of her mom's bf. There are a lot of ways to interpret that. Amazing songs throughout, especially Magic Dance, As The World Falls Down and Within You. Some really incredible visual effects too, for the time and still holding up today. Just an awesome movie overall, in every sense.

I do love Labyrinth and, of course, David Bowie as Jareth. For me, among other reasons, he is a complex character because he's giving Sarah what she needs and desires: 1) What's an adventure in a good fantasy story without a villain? She even wished Toby away, so Jareth didn't stole him. 2) Jareth, being powerful enough to reorder time, just let her and Hoggle continue the journey (despite the obstacles he cast on their way), so she could make and keep new friends and learn a more mature way to see the world without renouncing some childhood aspects. 3) Also, the Goblin King is natural with children (Magic Dance and holding him just proved that) because it's part of his role to take care of the child each time, while antagonasing with the runner; it's not personal. I really like your reactions, you have a wonderful insight about details most people ignore the first time watching a film. Here's a new subscriber for sure! Sorry if this comment end up being to long. Un enorme abrazo desde Lima, Perú. ;)

I feel like Sarah‘s attitude at the beginning was understandable. There’s a huge age gap between her and Toby. Her dad remarried and has a new kid and her stuff is being given to the new sibling and all the attention is on him. Which is understandable, he is a baby after all. So she probably felt like she was being replaced and not only that but she’s going through changes in a time frame where she is becoming an adult. She probably had a bit of resentment towards the younger brother and, after being taken away, she realized that she did care about him. Through her journey she saw that the things were just objects. She learned what’s important is her family and friends. Loved your reaction.

Fun Facts: A film collaboration between David Bowie, Jim Henson, Terry Jones and George Lucas. George is famous for Star Wars (obviously), Terry was a member of Monty Python and Jim was involved with the Muppets and Sesame Street (obviously). Jennifer Connelly was just 15 when she worked on this movie. Most of the crew who worked on this movie also worked on Jim Henson's earlier movie "The Dark Crystal". Check out a great documentary "Inside The Labyrinth", which takes you behind the scenes with how they made the movie. The song "Underground", featured during the movie credits, has Chaka Kahn, Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom) and Luther Vandross on backing vocals, plus Albert Collins on blues guitar. Long time Atlantic Records producer Arif Mardin was brought in to work his magic to release as a single along with the soundtrack.

David and Iman were so in love, it's so sweet, but also sad. She still wears her gold necklace that says his name. She still posts on her social media about him all the time. They were definitely soulmates. My dad died in 2009 and my mom has never even dated another man. They were together 35 years when he died.

in defence of Sarah: her parents had split (or her mum had died, we don't know) his dad remarried, had another kid, didn't pay her ANY attention, her stepmother doesn't like her, borderline hates her - and they're just using her as a free babysitter. I mean...even in a healthy environment, it's common for the elder sibling to go "yah but can you take her/him back now?!" or something simillar or worse I'm also VERY glad I didn't watch this when I was a kid; a) because I would certainly have had nightmares and b) fucking hell, David Bowie *.*

My brother is a widower. He lost his wife after 2 years fighting cancer. He went through a phase for a few months about a month after her death where he would go to the bars and pick up women. He was trying to escape from the pain. Trying to feel something “positive” instead of wallowing in sorrow. It was a broken man’s misguided attempt at healing. From the outside it seems obvious that it was not good, but from he was lost. He permanently destroyed his relationship with all of her family, including his stepchildren because they thought he was moving on too fast. They couldn’t understand he was paralyzed.

I believe that Sarah was mean to the baby because she was upset at her parents. He got more attention, she felt abandoned so she took it out on the innocent. That happens a lot. Her biological mother was not around if you have noticed. Maybe she died or left. Either way Sarah is stuck emotionally at a young age, probably years ago. She's a drama queen in a house with no one like her. So she seems to feel alone, partly because she kind of is.
