Has anyone ever realised that Jareth wanted to send Sarah to the beginning because he knows she won't give up and she will keep coming back so he gets to see her even more? and because he sends her back, he resets time again so she will stay longer! and this then fits in with the ending where he talks about how generous he has been and he wants her to love him!!!

As he finishes his song, you can feel the ache Jareth feels for her, as though he knew she would not accept his offier but still clung to the hope she might. I really wish this had gotten a proper sequel then, with an adult Sarah who betters understands his actions and a wiser Jareth who realizes how her age affected her decision.
@melissahegel75239 жыл бұрын
If they did make a sequel I definitely see it going in a different direction. First of all my thoughts on the movie esp the ending is this. Sarah went through jareths labyrinth for the soul purpose of getting her brother back not to be with jareth in any way or for him to be her personal bitch so of course she wasnt gonna accept his offer and as for what Jareth felt for her the only ache he felt was for himself knowing he was losing toby and losing his own stupid game he played with her of taking her brother and making her go theough his maze in order to get him back. Jareth was not one to take anything lightly likie portrayal,defiance or rejection so if they had made a sequel to labyrinth;well lets just say this. Have you ever been on the web siter of the labyrinth fan fics;where people write there own stories of the labyrinth including sequels;well theres this one someone wrote called entrapment of the peach which I thought was exactly the way a sequel would have gone had they decided to make one

*Edit as of 6/15/2023; I am aware now that Jim Henson already explained what this scene and story represents but at the time of writing this, I had only watched the movie adaptation and had not read the book or researched the creator and minds behind it all. ^ ^ Still, thank you to those of you who still agree or like my silly interpretation! Means a lot lol . . . Even if Jareth is some representation of the devil or whatever and he was trying to seduce and manipulate her to stay with him forever, still doesn't change the fact that Jareth sounds deeply hurt and lonely here. He does have feelings, even if they come off bitter and selfish. All he has is his goblins, no material thing satisfies him. He was drawn to Sarah because of her strengths, her courage, her purity, things he doesn't posses, despite his bravado's. He admired her for that (and possibly even feared), that's why she was special. She was different, she stood up to him and his challenges. Surely he had attempted this with other females before Sarah and all rejected his offers and failed. The sad thing is though, Jareth doesn't understand that's not how a woman's heart works. You can't always just simply toss pretty gifts in their face and expect them to be wooed and fall into your arms. The human heart is a complex thing, it takes time and reason and relies on connection. Not to mention, stealing your baby brother and threatening to turn it into a goblin doesn't exactly leave a good impression. Not saying Jareth is exactly innocent but I don't think he's necessarily pure evil, just following the wrong paths. Over time, he might have the potential to be good. Idk, it's something about this part of the film. He seems to be admitting his defeat and the fact that she's gotten the best of him. Surely he also admires Sarah for the compassion and dedication she has for her younger brother so when he says 'I can't live within you', I feel like he's also saying: I'm not capable of the same compassion you are. Maybe I'm looking too far into it, I just think there's a lot of possibilities.

They explain what Jareth represents in the labyrinth behind the scenes. Sarah has to choose between growing up and her childish fantasies. The labyrinth is a metaphor for the journey of coming of ageJareth is a representation of the rock star young girls dream of however, intimidating because he's an older man attracted to Sarah. This is where her scared and confused demeanor comes from towards Jareth. She is attracted to him as young girls are to their idols but is scared because it's a different kind of attraction now that she sees it from him. In the ballroom scene you can see it. She feels the tension and is confused between being a child in an adult world. The confusing transition of being a young girl and a woman at the same time. The time represents not only saving Toby but also her time of being a child running out. It's explained completely in the behind the scenes. Jim wanted to show this scary and confusing struggle as he has daughters and wanted to emulate this struggle.
@LivingDeadGurlXXX8 жыл бұрын
In the end of the movie Sarah rejects the offer of remaining in a fantasy world in order to grow up and face reality and the responsibilities that come with it. Including being an adult. Remember, Sarah didn't want to care for her baby brother. An adult responsibility. Her mother wants her to have a boyfriend and dates. Another adult responsibility. Sarah doesn't want to grow up...and facing the labyrinth made her realize that she has to. When Toby took Lancelot it got her angry. It was her toy. Her teddy bear. In the labyrinth...when she met the junk puppets (which were a representation of one carrying burdened baggages in life) they gave her Lancelot, her room and all her childish things. Sarah realizes....it's all junk. It's worthless. These toys...it's time to grow up and let it all go. Her room crumbles resembling her childhood walls tearing down. Sarah in the end of the movie is seen giving Lancelot to Toby accepting her fate. She's putting away everything in her room that

I once read a theory that Labyrinth is a story Sarah was writing and got lost in. Jareth wants to be her perfect villain, an all powerful, handsome dark figure feard by all. Facing him, she shows she's not scared of her own creation and his powers fade faster and faster. In this scene, he laments that he's everything she wants him to be, but it brings her no happiness and she defies him to the end.
@anastasia-fr1gn Жыл бұрын
What I love about this movie is that there can be so many interpretations of it. One theory that fits with this is that all of the things and characters in the underground come from her imagination and there’s hints of it in her room. There’s of course the labyrinth book she is reading, the figurine with the silver dress, a statue on her desk that looks similar to jareth, and even a poster on the wall of similar stairs like in this scene.

It’s a well backed theory, everything she sees and encounters is in her room at the beginning, there’s even a picture of David Bowie and her mom in her scrapbook!

He is within her. This whole construct is within her. He is a part of her. He is a part that wanted validation, but the main part of her on this journey within needed self determination and to protect her principles and assess her values. He has different needs. Within her construct she figured out her priorities. All of this labyrinth is in her. When she came to "reality" she actually woke up twice. She is also a good example of the phrase "Be careful what you wish for." js. He's not a villain. Never was. There's no villains here in this movie, they are all part of her and all needed something, all had a role in her growth and meaning of life and construct of reality. She moved on from each challenging aspect with self determination. She moved on. This whole movie is an inward self processing session. Such is life.

That's the glimpse of true love there. He loved Sarah with all his heart but didn't know how to make her love him so he thought that when he gives her a reason to come to him, in his realm, so he could interact more free with her, manipulate her...she would learn to love him over time. But the love for her baby brother was stronger than everything Jareth threw against her. He thought that she despises her brother so much, that she would love him for getting rid of Toby for her. So he changed his strategy and wanted to maker her love him with pretty presents. He wanted the impossible because here in his realm, he has everything he could desire but not love. Yes, he had his loyal goblin subjects but they feared him and he was unhappy with them, he has gold and other riches but not the only thing nothing can ever buy: The true love of a woman. In the end he was so sad and hurt that he wanted to make her understand that he loved her with all his heart but she had seen his cruel side. It was too late to turn back. And so he remained alone with a shattered heart.

beautiful music and wonderful story and film, loved it already as a little child (and hoped i could be in the fairy world) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changeling sagas tell, that elves sometime steal (unwanted) babies and exchange them with some creatures. And the story of the film reminds very much to that: somehow invisible entry to another world, the fairy world, where time goes differently ( -> some celtic sagas where someone comes to the fairy world) and creatures that all are named as fairies, goblins, pixies, etc. with an elf as their king. As seen in sagas and Tolkien's books elves can be good and bad, and they love music. The people in the ballroom could be elves, too, so he wouldn't be the only. He seems to feel comfortable among them, but watches the girl who feels afraid & lost because of the staring people. With invading her for dancing it could be a "don't come near, she is under royal protection", too Once read that other stories, too. But thinking of the character of the king, he has too much fun to be king, why should he leave and what would he do? He would be terribly lost in "our" world, where he's no one. Really thinking taking (unwanted) children to the faiy world is because of pity. Wouldn't it be a cute idea when these children play with fairy children?

Jareth is a faerie, and like most faeries he's very childlike and mischievous as well as being frighteningly dark and cruel. He hasn't had much contact with humans and when he does cross paths with them he's used trickery and cruelty to ensnare them in his world. He's trying the same old tricks with Sarah since up to now all humans have stumbled over the same thing and it's amusement to watch them fail, but Sarah is different from all other humans he's encountered. As she spends more time in his world tackling each obstacle before her he becomes enarmored by her strengths and perserverence, qualities that he's never seen before, and now the game turns into desperate attempts to convince her to stay with him. He tries to shower her with things he believes will make her want to stay and over time she does start to develop feelings for him, but her responsibility for the safety of her little brother takes precedence over her own heart so she rejects Jareth in order to persue her quest. Jareth not understanding what true love is nor realising that humans are a lot more complicated than he thinks is left with a mixture of feelings - confusion, frustration, bitterness and heart break - to why she's rejecting him. Those final words he sings "I can't live within you" are his realisation that there's no place in her heart for him. Could he really have changed enough in a sequel to live happily ever after with Sarah if she came back to him? Well surprise, there were sequels but unfortunately their ending were far from that. They were mostly centered around Toby who's now grown up to a teenager and when Jareth finally did confront the now adult Sarah in the human world she had no memory of him or her time in the Labyrinth. I won't spoil too much but if you're interested in knowing the fate of Jareth, Toby and Sarah look up the manga Return to Labyrinth.

Such s whimsical movie. Great for kids at that time but it had such adult themes. In my mind, it's clearly about the male and female dynamic. He yearns for her, she yearns for him. It's very clear. And the lyrics to this song, incredible. Just as a make would profoundly think; "I move the stars for no one!" But how often do we? Even females for males. Great stuff.

I wish we could travel back to the 70’s aswell, Time is moving fast. I can’t believe that we are literally going to be 20 years into the 21st century! 1990 will be 30 years old! :(

This may be obvious to most, but I just realized that all the names in Labyrinth have Hebrew roots and meaning. Sarah (שָׂרָה) means: "Lady" or "Princess" (Jennifer Connelly's mother Ilene was Jewish and was educated at a yeshiva.) Jareth (Hebrew: יֶרֶד Yereḏ/Yāreḏ, "to descend"; Greek: Ἰάρετ or Ἰάρεδ Iáret; Arabic: يَارَد Yārad) >> Ancient Greek Ἰαρέδ (Iaréd), from Biblical Hebrew יֶרֶד (yéred). Often explained as deriving from the root י־ר־ד (y-r-d), which forms words relating to descending; some interpret the Book of Enoch as suggesting that the Jared in the Bible was so named because it was in his time that two hundred angels descended from Heaven to Mount Hermon. Alternatively, sometimes explained as deriving from the root ר־ד־ה (r-d-), which forms words relating to ruling.

First time I watched Labyrinth I must have been about 8 years old. Naturally as a young kid I loved this and Jim Hensen, Bowie, Connolly and the rest of the cast and design and puppet crew did such an absolutely amazing job with this from start to finish. It still holds supremely well even now in 2022. My god I loved this scene, there's such a dark and tortured romantic side to this scene conveyed from Bowie to Connolly and the background maze in the style of Moritz Escher is a perfectly fitting space and finale for the movie.

there aren't a lot of lyrics to this song, and that's the beauty of it. All the lesser lines are deleted. What's left, cuts to the core.
