You've really woken up my love for pencils. With back injury it's difficult for me to paint in oils at this point. So your pencil tutorials have helped me figure out which pencils to invest in. BTW love your nail art in your videos. Thanks for being so wonderful and willing to help other artists.

Lisaaa. First I have to say congrats on your amount of subscribers now. So proud and excited for you. I have been watching so long and it's been super cool to watch you grow and grow (your channel and your work). I always wonder if you will be able to comment back if I comment but you have always still managed to, pretty awesome with so many comments! I'd get overwhelmed lol. I hope I can handle it if I ever get 20k+ subscribers. Shoot, even 5k or 1k+ lol. Anyways enough of that ramble, I just wanted to say I am always wishing I had good reference photos with either no copyright or even with a photographer wanting their stuff painted sooooo you can imagine how much I loved the paintmyphoto website! Wow! I have found some decent landscape photos through free websites or fb groups but never such amazingly perfect bird ones (composition and all just so amazing, the photographers seem more professional on this site) and even the landscapes or mountains are so.. Wow! I haven't spent a longgg time on the site, just briefly checked out the "five star photos" so far but seriously I'm so excited about the owls and birds and mountains and landscapes I saw. I'm sure there will be more great ones. Oh and the flowers! I'm super glad you posted that link! Also, I just want to say that you're a huge inspiration for me knowing you have fibro and similar health struggles to mine and still manage to be so consistent. I know how unpredictable my health is and it's personally so hard to get back on here. I made speed paintings (time lapse or whatever they're technically called) a few years ago but over the years my arthritis in my spine worsened and my fibro worsened and I have extremely severe tmj and now it needs (the jaw breaking) surgery to fix the alignment on top of the tmj =\ it's hard to paint with all these physical struggles! Anyways point is its rough having all these health problems and I really respect and look up to you for everything you do. I've been a long time fan of yours and I secretly wish we were friends because we have so much in common lol that probably sounds creepy on your end of this "conversation" haha. Anyways overall just thanks! You're awesome lol =D

I have the Luminance in set 72 too! & the Prismacolor in set 150... I personally love the Luminance one rather than the prismacolors. Its worth the money! Its more of like an oil based color pencils & the prismacolors are like wax based color pencils. I love how its easy to blend. I'm having a hard time blending the prismacolors even if I have the blender. :) Anyway you are amazing! Such a great tip! I shall try the paint thinner!

I prefer the Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolor pencils, becaus they are a bit more soft than the Polychromos, but it´s also possible to bring much detail in your drawing. First I used them for watercolor paintings, but then I stopped using them with water because I love to use them like normal colored pencils.

I bought the small 20 pencil set a couple months ago to try them out, and decided that the colors in the smallest set were inadequate...so i just bought an additional 20 from open stock...mostly i got neutrals and flesh tones, and just a handful of jewl tones...and maybe next month im going to add an additional ten pencils to round out the set,..idont feel need the full 76 however...i love them but they are very soft..i find it hard to get very crisp details like i get with polychromos...its a good thing they work well togther.

I really like this type of art though im yet to try it myself I would love to paint but because im used to drawing I find painting with a brush much more difficult compared to a solid material like a pencil so this kind of gives you the best of both worlds :-) btw you are doing well with the Patrone thing, thanks for keeping the price low I will be paying soon I think. Juicystart07 speaks very fast as well but she bites every word so it's way harder like that ahha ! i'm like you, i speak very fast so i guess i'm used to it and it's a good training for my speech problems since i bite the words all the time :D I'm gonna do a first impression video for the inktense pencils, maybe you'll fall in love with them !

Hi Lisa, great video as always! I've only recently discovered your channel and I love what you do. I must've watched over twenty of your videos already and, as a complete beginner, have found tons of helpful information to get me started. You've inspired me to start drawing with coloured pencils but I haven't managed to find any video where you explain how you do your initial graphite sketch. I've heard about the grid method and other techniques for transfering, so I was wondering if you would recommend using any of these or just going freehanded. Thanks!

***** I usually get my drawing students started off by tracing first. There are several reasons for this which I explain in this video Artist Vlog - Is it ok to trace? - Lachri I'm not saying you should have to depend on tracing, but it will strengthen your own drawing skills as you go if you're always starting with an accurate drawing in the first place :)

Lachri Fine Art I also think that's a great idea. I to want to develop my coloured pencil skills and would like some basic guidelines. Like layering and using a light hand. Also, I love to paint, but I always mess up a piece when I paint it which is one of the reasons I turned to coloured pencils and I was wondering if maybe you could do a starter video on painting as well if you get the chance. I started with acrylics and had serious problems with them drying to fast so I switched to watercolours and while I like to use them for backgrounds on my coloured pencil pieces, I miss the thick, rich, opaque quality of the acrylics. I see what you do with acrylics and I want to try painting again.

I'm always surprised when people compare prismacolor v luminance . I'm very new to colored pencils but I started by grabbing a set of prismacolor premier and just seeing if I even enjoyed it . A few weeks later I ran out to grab a set of 60 polychromos and a few white luminance pencils. Anyways what I'm getting at is that even as a beginner the quality between a luminance and a prismacolor is quite stark . Did the prismacolors work ? Yep 😁 lol but many of them also crumbled every time I sharpened , like the cores were already fractured throughout the pencil. When you are literally losing 1/3 or better of several of the colors in a set just to re sharpening after the lead falls out or crumbles directly after sharpening you are getting screwed by poor quality control. I started with a set of 24 prismacolor and of those I think about 5 were garbage , the entire core was fractured . I realize it's wax based and there are likely remedies to this but I don't care lol . After having used the polychromos and the white luminance pencils none have broken on me as of yet , the colors are great and the overall look and quality says it all . There is really no comparison , other than that they are both colored pencils they aren't even in the same room. And yes I know I'm new so my opinions are probably a little bit less than educated but I go by what I feel and my experience with prismacolor was nothing short of frustrating , I gave them to my kids . Not to mention that I strongly doubt that the prismacolor line is anywhere near as lightfast as they claim them to be . I know that they are capable in the right hands of producing very fine quality pieces as I've seen it but in the end they are in my head forever off my list of buy agains. I think that they are a budget pencil and that's that , not on the level of many other brands so why bother comparing , I also tried a twelve set of goldfabers and they are fantastic compared to prismacolor pencils imo and more of a likely comparison compared to the luminance pencils. Anyways I'm ranting lol, I really enjoy your videos they are very informative and I hope to be joining some more in depth classes soon enough.

Hi, have you done a review of the Holbein color pencils?
@Lachri
@Lachri 8 жыл бұрын
Here is a write up on them that I did from one of my recent newsletters :) People keep telling me that they heard they were "the best pencil in the WORLD!". I'm not sure where this "best pencil in the world" idea about these started, but there are some MASSIVE, deal-breaking issues with these pencils that remove them from even making my "pencils I'm slightly interested in" list...let alone making a "best in the world" list. Let's start with the price. They run anywhere from $320-350 online for a set of 150. I've not personally tested them but I have a friend I completely trust the opinion of and she said they are very similar to Polychromos. She said they are good but not any better than polychromos. Issue #1 They list themselves as having "excellent lightfastness", but I can't find actual lightfast ratings online. They are marked with a star system that makes me think they are using the Blue Wool scale, but I'm not sure. Normally I wouldn't really question a company's claim to their lightfast ratings. The problem for me is that this company has been pretty shady about testing for toxicity and this is why they aren't sold within the US. The last I heard they had no intention of selling within the US because of this. Why are they refusing to provide their toxicity reports, or why are they refusing to have them done? Considering the market for colored pencils right now it's hard to imagine it's a cost issue, so that concerns me. As an oil painter, it's not that I'm opposed to using materials that are toxic, but I want to know that information so I can take the necessary precautions. Issue #2 Because they are not providing toxicity reports, they can not sell them within the US (yes you can get them through amazon or ebay but not actual art suppliers). This means you can not get these pencils open stock. So you get to spend over $300 for a set of pencils, then when you run out of one you get to buy another set to replace it! Great deal!! Wait no, that's a terrible deal. I don't care how good a pencil might be, if you can't get it open stock there is no reason to use them at all in my opinion. How many times have you had to replace your white pencil alone, let alone other colors? So you spend $300 on pencils and just hope you don't like any one color too much...because you can't replace it! Those issues combined with the price are deal breakers for me. If any of this ever changes I will be happy to test these out for you guys, but I won't do it until they address these problems.
@locoyo386

Lachri Fine Art thanks for the info. I definitely did not buy them because of the price point. They looked like they might be worth it. But thanks to your info. I think I will pass on them as well. The open stock issue being the main reason as well as the lightfast. I do not know of anyone who has never used a pencil more than the rest. Usually black, white or red for me. Once again thanks for the info. Love your art work by the way.

Btw the Inktense pencils/blocks (as they do come in both pencil and blocks) please be aware that there are lightfast issues with them. I only found out after purchase when researching them after finding out that the Prismacolors had issues...I went thro all my art supplies to check on the lightfast issues. Huge issue as well with the Derwent Graphitint where within 2 weeks and even in my desk drawer they faded /changed colors. Huge disappointment with Derwent for me.

I finally purchased the 76 set of Caran D'ache Luminance pencils and I love them, however, I do feel that perhaps they are wasted on me as my abilities are not that refined, but I am enjoying the improving process. I have the Faber Castell 120 Polychromous, the Caran D'ache and a few Derwent sets, you have inspired me so much Lisa, although, my wife is not too inspired with the dent in our bank account lol. Amazing work, thank you so much.

+Lachri Fine Art at least unlike markers they don't wear out if you don't use any for awhile, or bloody ages you can always pass them on to next gen if wanting....then you see them being broken in half with miss treatment and you get to cry lol.

Great video! How long did this piece take you? And did you use freehand for the outline of the bird and branch?
@Lachri
@Lachri 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I spent 3 or 4 days on it. The actual video recorded was 10 hours total, but I pause every time I get up, or have to stop to sharpen a pencil etc. For this one I designed the layout in photoshop, then traced over the general outline to save time.

I'm confused when you say they are colored pencils. Are they pencil crayons or are they water color pencils? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question...

hey lisa, nice video, i have not heard of those types of colored pencils before, how would you grade them compared to fabercastell and prismacolor? and btw, i just got a set of derwent softcore colored pencils, have you tried them?
@Lachri
@Lachri 10 жыл бұрын
rell relle I've not tried the derwent pencils yet. As for how these compare to prisma, they are hands down superior in pretty much every way IMO. They blend nicely like the prismas, but don't seem to have such a huge wax build up. They don't break and crumble like the prismas do either. As for comparing them to the polychromos that is a bit harder. I really like using the two types together. The polychromos are easier to get detail with, but then I love how the luminance blend. I'm working on a Prisma vs Luminance video for next week, then sometime in the near future I will have a Luminance vs Polychromos :D

Lachri Fine Art awesome. ive watched your prismacolor vs fabercastell a few months ago, and after i watched it, i stopped buying prismacolors (and i guess alot of people also becuase their prices dropped on amazon by 20 dollars on the 48 and 72 sets!) i will look into luminance pencils, can you tell me the types of sets they have? (example 48 or 72) i like fabercastell alot, but i do not like their blending as much becuase they are not as waxy, harder to blend like i want. cant wait for the review!!!!

Hi Lisa, Have you ever used/done work in pastel pencils? I would think they'd be something you'd love given that you like to blend and do realism work. I LOVE pastels pencils and work entirely with the Faber-Castell set (although I think I may get another brand to try as well, but I'm just so in love with the FCs!). Now that I have discovered your videos, I also went ahead and got the biggest set of Faber-Castell colored pencils, the 76 set of Luminance colored pencils as well as the 36 Prisma Verithins (to try with detailing).

Jessica Gaudette I have used them in the past. While they are beautiful, I HATE how the powder feels on my hands and how messy it is, so I stopped :P

Ahhh, I follow Colin Bradley who is a great pastel pencil artist and he uses the colour shapers to blend them almost all of the time, so that's not always an issue :)

Do you think White Spirit would work as a substitute for Paint thinner?
@Lachri
@Lachri 10 жыл бұрын
PenaforeRealm I'm not sure what that is. Any odorless mineral spirit will work fine.

Lachri Fine Art Its one of the ingredients of paint thinner next to turpentine, thanks for the tip From wiki - Mineral spirits are a petroleum-based product. They are best used on oil-based paints that are still fresh. Many artists and painters use them to clean brushes. They have less odor than turpentine but have their own dangerous fumes: methane produced by the hydrocarbons in the mineral spirits

I'm confused when you talk about wax bloom. I saved some of your vids for later so I could go through them better but somewhere in one of the vids you talked about wax bloom as if it's something that happens while you're drawing. It's my understanding that wax bloom is something that happens much later. It can happen 3 months later, or 6 months later. The wax moves to the top and creates a sort of film (that can be removed). It is an actual visible film but is not something that happens during the drawing. It can be prevented if you use a sealer when you're done with the drawing. But you seem to be using the term to mean something different. Can you please explain?
