I was born in the 1940s, so I am old enough to remember the 1950s. Handbags were structured. They came with a little tissue-wrapped mirror and a small comb. I remember wearing hats and gloves to church on Sunday, into the 60s. Jackie Kennedy was a style-setter. She made the pillbox hat famous. Love that broad-brimmed hat with the pink flowers. We were required to wear swim caps in swimming class in junior high. You have great fingernails.

Let's start the discussion regarding quality of old textiles. I care well for my (modern) textiles, but anyway after 15 years of use the heavy-duty cotton bedlinen starts falling into pieces and become unrepairable. Modern cotton blouses live even less, even if one washes them at 40 degrees for just 20 minutes (light-wash program). And still some 1950-s apparels survived for 70 years and are still wearable!

Don't forget that EVERYTHING was dried on a clothes line back then. I have 50+ year old t-shirts and clothes I made in my teens - I'm 70 now. I'm not that great of a seamstress, but have never owned a dryer. They ruin fabric faster than anything. Wash in cold, line dry or dry flat on a drying rack. Your items will last for decades, not years.

The tap,pants are fantastic! I have my grandma’s full hand sewn in France silk wedding trousseau of lingerie from slips to tap pants, boudoir pillow covers, negligees and the like. About 30 pieces in all, all silk with beautiful lace trims and satin ribbons and MOP delicate buttons, made in the mid 20’s! Also have a stunning hand crocheted lace bedspread and a gorgeous hand crocheted beaded lace dress with jacket and beaded flapper dress, all from my grandma’s trousseau for her wedding and honeymoon. Such treasures and family history and luxury! Btw, the one with purple flowers was made by hand using a square handkerchief cut into 4 squares for the appliqués! Great handmade apron finds!!! This person entertained a lot!

I was born in 1950 and loved everything about it as I got older. My sister and I would sneak up and play with Mom's jewelry, brush and comb set and try on her beautiful church-going gloves in lime green, red, royal blue and orange. She had hankies, too. I still have them along with more that I have collected in lots of colors. I do teas and you have to have gloves, hankies, doilies, costume jewelry to adorn the teapots. I have a collection of teapots. I needed watching this today to keep my mind off of this election that has gone haywire. Never thought I would see it in my lifetime.

Laci, I am 13 years old. Sadly my grandparents passed away a few years ago, but they told me stories from the 50’s, they got married in the 50’s and they made it seem like heaven, I wanted to go back to the 50’s but that’s not possible, so I found a way to bring the 50’s to me, I started decorating my room vintage when I was 11, but my room wasn’t enough for me, I started dressing vintage, dyed my hair a nice golden blond and I still wasn’t satisfied, I styled my hair vintage every day, started dressing vintage every day until when you walked in my room it looked like you found a vortex in time and you were in the 50’s, it makes me truly happy and I feel like this is who I am, my self-confidence has shot through the roof, but I get bullied at school for being a “grandma” “50’s wannabe” and other mean stuff one girl even ripped my nice yellow true vintage dress. Your a real hero to me and it makes me feel that whatever makes me happy it doesn’t matter what other people think, Thank you so much.

What a haul and a flashback to my childhood! The outfits you modelled look great on you. The vanity set might be from the early 1900s because of the button hook if it goes with the set. I’ve worn the flowered bathing caps and slips. If your slip suddenly showed at the bottom of your dress you might hear “You’re slipping”...oh no..how embarrassing ...sounds silly ! Nobody really dresses up anymore but everything looks good on you..so elegant..Take care ❤️ 🇨🇦

When someone's slip showed we would say " it's snowing down South"😊
@sueclark57634 жыл бұрын
Sue Brown, yep, the give away is the button hook, for high button shoes and the box with the hole in the lid. Women would brush their hair, then take the hair out of the brush and stuff it thru the hole in the box, when they had enough, they would use the strands to make "hair pictures" with, the strands were twisted together and sewn down on a piece of fabric. Some of the pictures were quite large and very beautiful, yeah, sounds kind of gruesome I guess, but during the Victorian era they showed how creative a woman could be!

When I watched this video, I kept thinking... I want to live in the USA 😄!!!We also have flea markets, second-hand shops and so on in Germany, but it is getting harder and harder to find things from the 50s or 60s that are affordable because the prices increased over the last years.... Things from the 1940s are mostly no longer or very difficult to find, because a lot of things from that time were irrevocably destroyed in the 2nd World War. I find most of my stuff in the internet via Ebay and Co in Germany, Great Britain or in the USA . Therefore I am very glad that the Internet exist The 50's in Europe were in some things very different from this time period in the United States.
@peggyolson65113 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, Marylin. One of the joys of travelling abroad (from the UK) is to scout for charity shops etc to find things which give you a good feel for the local culture. In Hamburg, I was amazed that I could only find one charity shop. (similar disappointments in Munich and Berlin) The only exciting thing was that chain of stores, Pic 'n Weight, but most of the stuff is from the 80s. But it was fun to look. Come to the UK, we have LOTS of charity shops and vintage fairs and the stuff is mostly affordable. Bring a big suitcase!
@Marilyn473ify3 жыл бұрын
@peggy olson yes that's true! Stuff from the 80s or 90s are not so hard to find here in Hamburg and all over Germany. We have some flea markets around in the summer time mostly, there you can find some stuff but in other parts of Germany like Berlin, lower Saxony or in the Rhine Ruhr area you can find more antiques. I know that from friends of the vintage and rockabilly scene who live there. They can find more antique things at flea markets or in thrift stores.Sometimes they sell some of their findings via Facebook 😉 I really think because not all German people could afford a lot of special things after the war so there is more less to find nowadays especially fancy things, in different parts of the country yes but not everywhere. My whole furniture (only some parts are modern) I searched and bought all over Germany but they are not extrem very special things. Fancy Handbags or hats I always found and bought via the internet in the UK and USA or in some countries around Germany. Thank God for the big scene and a lot of vintage fans 😉But we have very good handcrafted reproductions of hats and jewelry or clothing also in German Mostly old things I found in Britain or in the US. Sadly because of the Brexit and the Customs duties that we must pay now again it is getting harder to buy 50s, 60s things via the web because prices increase now. So yes I think we should visit GB with a little truck one day... 😁😉 I love the British vintage style and we like to visit some British festivals in the future because I like England very much even if I wasn't there before 🙈But it is definitely on my to do list 😁

What amazing finds! Thanks for sharing them. The peacock bedspread is a knockout! I've never seen one like it. On the 30s dress, if you think the sash is original, be careful. If you have early enough sequins, you can't get them wet or they will dissolve, as they were made from, believe it or not, gelatin! I suspect it was a later addition, but couldn't really tell. The plaid dress is my favorite piece. I can't wait to get back to estate sales again! Congrats on your deals.

She made Jimmy's to look like pants. LOL. I still have my apron and my grandma's apron! When my son was little, he wore mine and I wore Grandma's while we did Christmas baking. I first got into vintage when my late great aunt died many years ago. I was around 13, and inherited all her old clothes - some with the tags still on. thanks for the video! Most of everything is opened back up where I live to! Went thrifting yesterday, and last week finally hit my favorite store gas lamp 1&2 antiques. Found some real cool 60’s swung glass and some other awesome stuff! ✨✨✨

In my home town when ladies had their hair done at beauty shop every week the hair nets you have with the ties on it were used by them if the wind was up or any weather change. They also put the net lightly over their hair to gently pull a shell( sweater) over their head so as not to mess up their new hairdo and it worked.

Adore the tap pants! My ex-mother in law worked at a plant in Calhoun GA where they made a lot of the chenille bedspreads.
