Actually Rocky suffers from what was known back then as Mad Hatter syndrome,which was caused by the mercury lining in most Fedora hats made back then like the one Rocky wears. Mercury would get into the wears body via the wearer sweating while wearing the hat,causing the mercury to soak into the skin.

It’s fun and refreshing to see a main character whose quirks are deliberately “other,” rather than working to be relatable to the viewer. He’s unique enough to stand out, but he’s also very reminiscent of the trickster gods and spirits of various legends and mythologies. Rocky’s up there with Puck, Ariel, Loki, Anansi, and Brer Rabbit!

The times America had reliable railways, infrastructure and - before the Wall Street crash - was brimming with optimism and boldness towards future that, unfortunately, was never really restored after the Great Depression and subsequent war: the world proved too unpredictable and prone to disasters. I sorta hate human nature.

@@okamijubeiWell, yes. Kind of. America, socially, and culturally, went back to that type of carefree, bold attitude. But it wasn’t to the partying degree of fashion and swagger that was seen in the 20s and 30s. Or with quite as much optimism. There were quite a few people living it up, and partying back then. But even then, some people didn’t have it as good. Still, that type of carefree, eccentric lifestyle seemingly dissolved after the stock market crash and the following war. Though, you could argue, that way of life still exists today, in 20s/30s themed parties and events.

This show is very dear to me. It reminds me of some stories that I heard from my great-grandmother growing up. She was born in 1915, and I was lucky enough to know her until I was 13 and she passed. She grew up in a farm during the 1920’s, and talked about the lengths her father and brother would go through during the prohibition to get alcohol. Her small town even kept its laws even after the prohibition stopped in 1933. But by then, you could cross the county line and get alcohol there. From what little she described, one of her brothers was a free spirit that got into trouble like Rocky, and her youngest sister was a lot like Freckle (more timid, no nonsense). Wish she was still around to have seen this series. I think she would have liked this series!
