I think a rerow would have been more honorable. Now nobody wins.

The sad thing about this is I would expect no one in that Leander crew is particularly proud of that medal. A rerow would have been the better outcome. But in future, its quite clear that to prevent accusations of bias, no umpire with affiliations to clubs racing should umpire a race.

From the video you can clearly see that the Nereus coach was urging his rowers to move away from the Leander crew, just like the umpire was. Terrible reason for disqualification

Fact. During the race the coach and in particular from the launch support staff are forbidden to intervene or coach the crews. Rules apply to both crews and their coaches. Perfectly fair and this rule has been in place for many many years. Shocking behaviour by Dutch coach and crew

@@djj6452 agreed and Boris is top umpire who does if needed enforce the rules rigorously in support of athlete fairness. His record does not suggest bias towards Leander or any U.K. crews in fact he expects domestic entries to have a surer understanding of the rules and regulations. Boris never rowed for Leander and is a member of a lot of rowing clubs to which he shows zero bias. The fact remains the Dutch coach stepped over the clear line and broke the rules. For an ex Dutch international and Olympic rower the mistake was pure rookie

@@peterbest5938 I can’t agree more ... the Dutch have lived on the edge of rules since the Golden age . I believe that if HRR invites some more international umpires the fairer the race. Wimbledon for instance. HRR classes itself as an international event but has a lot maybe British stewards panel .
@peterbest5938
@peterbest5938 3 жыл бұрын
@@djj6452 “international umpires” that implies the existing team of HRR qualified umpires is poor or bias. All HRR umpires have an international license and then are invited to train and qualify to umpire at the regatta and that means not just in the launches but timing and elsewhere. The issue with becoming a steward is there are plants of ‘international’ ones elected. Quite a few simply cannot commit to the meetings and traveling to fulfill the role - so the regatta is staffed with the folks it has which is kinda difficult to challenge when you see the caliber of actual stewards. You’re always gonna get partisan arguments especially by foreign crews some of who think the regatta is run by Leander when in fact the club has absolutely nothing to do with with it apart from it being run on the same stretch of river that Leander, Upper Thames and Henley RC are all based

You’ve got to love this. An English crew against Johnny Foreigner. An umpire called Boris waving white and red flags and using a megaphone. Boaters, blazers, roses in button holes and pink ties. A coach cheating. Rule 41n . Note to competitors 33c. (Only disappointed there was reference to subsection iv) Reference to our national Treasure “Steve” as the ultimate authority (only us English can be impartial and just and he was quite right to award it to his countrymen , he also happens to be a member of the same club). Umpire encouraging the English team to complain (how on earth they saw the opposition coach cheating when he did so behind the umpire’s back and he was blocking their view is amazing) The Ladies plate but no ladies competing. A sport you do sitting down and we really are jolly good at. Unsportsmanlike conduct and most disturbing of all “controversy over the Lunch break” You’ve got to love this. It’s all you want in a sport. It’s why we are such a great nation no one else in the world can make up sports and sporting rules like we can.

The rule is clear - no coaching of crew from within the umpire launch. Like most regattas you’re not allowed to coach a crew that is racing. It’s black and white and the coach new that. He cost them the race
@carolineturnbull1929

Nereus won. If there was any unsportsmanlike behaviour it came from Leander who, as the home club, should have accepted the result with good grace. From the umpiring point of view the question is: did either the poor steering or the coach's waving his hand affect the result? OK, I wasn't in the launch, but looking at the video I would say that it didn't. So Nereus won.
@peterbest5938

Dutch coach disgusting behaviour broke the rules that apply to both crews. He knew that. Would you say the same if Leander had behaved the same way and won - no of course you wouldn’t.
@paulflory3532
@paulflory3532 Жыл бұрын
@carolineturnbull1929 : As a competitor I would have agreed with you 100%. One step was missing here: before DQ'ing the dutch crew, the Leander crew should have been consulted and asked whether they wanted Nereus disqualified for this "coaching" (not considering bad steering here). I bet they would have voted no, because disqualifying Nereus did not mean Leander WON the race,. Would you really want to win the trophy this way? The coach's impulsive handwaving probably had no effect on the outcome. Doubtful if it was even noticeable 20 yards away by the Nereus stroke. In the heat of the race, he was likely fully occupied trying to hang onto their lead. Far more honorable and sportsmanlike to decline the penalty. Can't help thinking of the analogy of expelling a family that had come to one's house for dinner because one of their kids used the wrong fork: zero effect on the flavor or enjoyment of the food. If a penalty MUST be applied in a situation like this, it would make more sense to penalize the coach, either a fine or a ban from riding in the launch (which could apply to any coach from that club in any HRR event for the following year). What is disgusting to me is the way this situation was handled, not the behavior of the Dutch coach. Rules should be enforced with thought, not mindlessly. On a much lesser scale, something similar happened to me in the 1x at the Head of the Charles. A guy I was passing angled over into me and we tangled, a violation of the rules carrying a 1 minute time penalty for him. The referee mistakenly applied the penalty to me, I appealed and won the appeal, and, bless them, they asked me if I wanted the 1' penalty to be assigned to the other guy. I said no: (a) it was inadvertent, (b) sorting ourselves out cost him (and me) time, (c) since I had caught him I had already beaten him, and (d) adding 1' to his time would not deduct 1' from mine.

Absolute bullshit, if anything from the clip they show here he was trying to stop them making a mistake before they make it (correcting the steering) albeit slightly before the umpire does the exact same, which is what the umpire should be doing in the first place. Leander were certainly not disadvantaged any more than any other crew of the regatta, should have at the very very least been a re-row. Absolute disgrace, hope this man never umpires at Henley again. This and the decision with Sydney were wrong.
