I hope the anime stays popular enough that they can get through all the light novels. This season roughly follows Volume 1 for the first Cour, then the second Cour ends Volume 2. Some rearranging has been done, I am told. With 15 LN so far, lots of seasons could come our way.

The Apothecary Diaries is based on Chinese culture at the time when there was an Emperor. Women were not allowed to be doctors. Men could only work in the Emperor's harem by becoming eunuchs (Only the Emperor can touch the flowers, it can be said). Sometimes prior knowledge of cultures can be clues. =)

As I was listening to your discussion I have this urge to directly point out (not spoiler because it was already stated in this episode but just have to understand fully) but please take note of this "A former eunuch with a bone removed from one knee" . EUNUCH. His dad is a Eunuch while working in the palace 17 years ago and Maomao is 17 years old. And you never know how long he had worked there.

Maomao is 17 at this Time of the Story which is near the end of Light Novel Volume 1. She is only 19 in Light Novel volume 6 which is far from the current Light Novels that the Anime adapts and in Light Novel Volume 9 she is then 20 and depending how the Author continues the Light Novels she might get older while the Story continues.

Moamoa has been in the palace for 11 month by now (10 month by episode 7, right after the garden party, + all the event since). Either she was 16 when kidnapped, or just turned 17. Garden party are twice/year, fall and spring. By the time the next Garden Party is here, Maomao will be either 17 if she started the show at 16, or 18 if she started at 17.

Maomao is 17 at this point in time, but that is by Imperial China's (what the show is loosely based on) measurement of ages. The way they determined age was that a baby was 1 year old at their birth and increased in age by 1 at the beginning of each Chinese year. So, Maomao was actually born 15 - 16 years ago.
