The Pan and Scan is from the 1987 Walt Disney Classics release. The colors were different, but most of these films at the time were like scanned from the 35mm or 16mm film masters, so colors may have changed due to age. However, it is possible it could have changed the colors digitally for some reason, but for a film from 1955, the colors have most likely aged and restored by hand.

I wish this video existed in the 90s, when I was trying to explain to people the difference between widescreen and pan and scan and just how much information is lost with the latter.

I remember watching Lady and the Tramp for the first time on Disney Channel when I was very young around the early-2000s and and it was the Academy ratio version as seen on the 1998 Masterpiece Collection VHS/Laserdisc with the Buena Vista opening logo intact, completely unaware that the CinemaScope widescreen version of the film does exist since I never owned it on video back then. After renting the 2006 Platinum Edition DVD of the film from video stores one time (now I don't have that DVD), in addition to the upgraded restoration quality I shockingly then saw two alternate versions of the film which I never saw before when I play it on my TV: the original CinemaScope widescreen version which shows way more picture at the sides, and an alternate 4:3 pan-and-scan version which looks even more cramped and zoomed-in compared to the one I previously saw on Disney Channel.

CinemaScope is the most abstract and reveals more of the picture. Pan and Scan looks claustrophobic and Academy Ratio is missing some detail.

@@jonathansabinvarietyfilms there is an extremely difficult DVD release to find of the movie from the late 90s. It presents the movie in 2.35:1 as opposed to the original CinemaScope format. But, it was also issued on VHS as well. It does have information missing on the sides.

In the academy ratio print, in the dialog cut "He's never called me that before," you note Lady's color scheme is repainted as different as the background. Her ears are darker, her pupils are fully black and her fur seemed slight contrasted.

This means and looks. Espcecially in the Mirror reflection. This means the Academy version was a completely different animated set up, and a simple Pan and Scan at all. The mirror reflection as an example is a totally different image than the others. Even animating the 3 shot of the dogs was totally redone. Very insteresting, wow. - Toronto, Canada.

@@jonathansabinvarietyfilms I know this is two years late, but here's a link to a video I saw of the "Peace on Earth" scene. You can clearly tell by the houses on the sides that it's the academy version kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmmwgY2aedGWZtk Also, the 2006 DVD, which I have in my collection of DVDs, has two versions of the movie. Along with the cinemascope version (labeled as "widescreen" in the menu), there's a version labeled "fullscreen" and believe it or not it's the pan and scan version. I have a feeling they redid the pan and scan though, since it's a little more zoomed out than the 1987 VHS, there's letterboxing at the beginning of the peace on earth scene (it's VERY minor), and in the scene with the two houses where the academy ratio pans and zooms, the pan and scan on the 2006 DVD shows both houses, but the house on the right is very close to the edge, and the house on the left is cut off, and like the pan and scan on the 1987 VHS, it also waits for the zoom And finally, the movie actually aired on ABC earlier this year, and they formatted the film for 16:9. I'm not sure if they just cropped it or actually did some pan and scanning. Here's a link to that kzbin.info/www/bejne/anXVgY2ud9d9iJo

@@jonathansabinvarietyfilms, for the 1987 VHS release, it was probably because for the theatrical reissue the year before, Disney only distributed the Cinemascope print to theaters, because widescreen cinemas were a lot more commonplace by that time. Since it was the most recent print and in the best shape, they used that for the video release, applying pan-and-scan and blacking out the Buena Vista logo at the start (many of the older Walt Disney Classics Collection video releases would hide the old RKO and Buena Vista logos).

Tv screens were very small and square for widescreen formats, they would have laked in resolution and details. Sometimes pan and scan was the best solution to see the main action with best quality and resolution available at the time. In this case they should have used the academy ratio version.
