This is very late to the party, I live in the south and I’m always so excited to see these in my house. I let them roam around and then gently put them back outside after I start worrying that they’ll dehydrate. We had the red lady beetles when I was a kid in the 1970s in Indiana and I never seen the yellow or orange lady beetles until the mid 90s when I bought a house near a grain elevator. Now I have only seen one red one since the mid 90s.

Hi Tony Hill. Thanks for sharing your observations and experiences. You bring up a very good point. Invasive species often lead to a decline in diversity and numbers of competing native species. It seems every one has always loved and cherished finding a native lady "bug" symbol of good luck in lore. Now, sadly the natives seem to be seen all too infrequently. :-(

Here's a fun fact: Lady bugs can and will eat bed bug nymphs in your house, so don't be too hostile towards them. Also if you have a garden and see ladybugs in it, then this is pretty much the middle finger to any garden lice that may have taken residence in your home.

Hey Frank, I just stumbled upon your channel and can't wait to see what other gems of knowledge you have on your site. But first things first. This story took me back several years when I installed a battery powered gate operator on the back side of an airport near me. It was bordered by a field with trees and bushes near the install site. I got called back because the operator had quit working and when I opened it up there were hundreds of lady beetles covering the battery charger and battery and had crawled inside the charger and shorted it out. I have never seen so many lady beetles in one place before. I also have been bitten by a lady beetle upon landing, but never when just crawling on me. 🐞🐞🐞🐞😎

I live in a valley that’s mostly agricultural fields, and these things swarm my house the first week of November every year. They’re always worse during years that the fields are planted in cotton. The house is covered in white vinyl siding, and they get under it to get out of the weather. They used to be a huge problem every year because they’d die under the siding and in the window sills, and it made the house smell like rotting potatoes. When I first see them on the house every year, I mix HiYield 38 2oz per gallon in a 25 gallon sprayer and wet the exterior of the house with it from the overhangs to the foundation, and especially on & around the windows. The residual from HiYield 38 mixed in that strength stays on the surface at least 30 days. I’ve been doing that the past 3 years and I’ve yet to have a problem with them getting inside the house. I tore an old shed down on the property one winter, and when I removed the old foundation blocks from below the ground level, I found tens of thousands of these beetles inside the blocks. The HiYield is also effective in controlling mosquitoes during the warm months if it’s sprayed in the same location, as well as on all the bushes & trees near the house at least once every 30 days. Controls spiders under the overhangs also. A friend of mine who’s a pest control guy told me about it.

Hi , I wish I knew about you a few years back. I was in a apt with many problems. I bombed the apt 3 times, I don't understand how a apt can have a few infestations at once. It was really 🤪 crazy, I tried to explain what was going on to the office, I had no luck. I think when I moved in, the carpets were the beginning, then I brought in furniture from a thrift shop . It was crazy under the cushions, it looked like a dirt spot, but it wasn't because it had appeared and disappeared. than I found little tan bugs in a box. This is when I bombed the apt for the first time. Something was in the carpets, couldn't even be seen, but my cat knew. So much more I won't get into but have you ever heard of such a thing? Do u have any idea what was going on? I also found black bugs n the oven light, over the oven. Any ideas? It was a nightmare.

Thanks! This is super informative. I love ladybeetles but we have a minor infestation in one of our bedrooms and it's become a major issue. Especially at night, the lights drive them a bit bonkers lol. Completely harmless but makes my partner freak out despite my best efforts to tell her they won't do anything haha. I appreciate the informative outlook, I think its important to understand them and respect nature in general. Not just how to deal with them if they do become a problem, but why it happens also. Removing them has been fairly easy, but they sure are persistent little critters!
@natureatyourdoor2 жыл бұрын
You are Welcome 12fishcake! I am curious to know if you ever experienced them biting you. Many viewers said they have been. Co out my latest video on this topic!
@12fishcake2 жыл бұрын
I've heard that they can bite but it's pretty rare from my understanding. I've handled them plenty times with no biting. From what I understand, bites sometimes occur in those indoor situations where they're searching for nutrition but it's still quite an uncommon occurrence. I don't think its anything anyone should be concerned about, unless someone is allergic. I believe the ones we are having a particular issue with in our house (UK) are the Asian variety too. There's quite a variation in spots and shades of red, and several that are black in colour with 2-4 larger red spots. I always used to think the black ones specifically were harlequin ladybugs, and that they were poisonous in some way but it seems they are just one of the variety of colours Asian ladybugs come in, and harlequin is just another name for that species. Them being poisonous is just a misconception too, I suppose this just comes from the fact they stand out a lot from the red ones and that Asian ladybugs tend to cause a stronger reaction than others if someone is allergic. Someone probably made that connection at some point and it became a popular myth, but they're just as harmless as their red buddies!

We’ve had a severe problem with them in Middle TN in rural areas and they are orange and they do bite or maybe they’re pinching. I’m not sure but it stings when they do it. When there’s lots of them around my children don’t want to go outside and play cause they’re in swarms and on more cases than not, they’ve bitten/pinched me and them. Thank you for this informative video though. I enjoy a lot of your videos!! The first time I had seen them in this area was about 15 years ago.

Hi Priscilla. Thanks for sharing your observations and experiences. I am concerned about the biting aspect that you and others have reported to me. We had many many in our house last year and I never experienced a bite. I think I am going to get a bunch and pressure them on my arm with my hand and see this first hand! Glad you are enjoying my videos. I feel like I dropped the ball on the biting behavior. Thanks again for sharing with me and the NAYD learning community!

Thank you for your response. I did want to add, because I didn’t think to mention this earlier, when I’ve seen them I’m my house they usually die off because I live in a wooded area and have sprayed around all doors and windows. However, when they’re out in full force and swarming in the yard, that’s when we’ve experienced the biting or pinching. It’s not a horrible pain, but just enough to aggravate you and make you want to stay away! Lol

Great informative video! These insects rarely bite but they do bite. I do not know if they can actually puncture the skin but they can use their mouth to inflict what feels like a bite and it is relatively painful. I have had this happen to me three or four times and I have spoken with other people who have also been bitten. It would be interesting to know why they bite. Perhaps human skin is nourishing or there is something on human skin that is nourishing such as salt or oil.

Yes Lleaves really great comment. Yes..i stand corrected...with years of these in our house, we have never been bitten and I underestimated the research on biting...which say it is so infrequent I decided to leave that out! Added to your list "desicationn", in the heated home environment and a desperate need for moisture. In the interest of science I am planning to sacrifice a limb and see if I can force biting to see what this is all about! I'm in Toronto, Canada and I saw about 7 or 8 of these beetles around my window today when I came home, it was the first warm day of the spring. I noticed a hole left by some dried caulking and I decided to seal that off with packing tape and through the course of an hour or two, I saw two or three of the lady beetles trying to get out and turn right back. So basically they are trying to go outside and are attracted to the light. So, I put a towel over the sealed hole to eliminate the light and hopefully the asian beetles will go out the right hole back outside, that's my only solution do this (I'll recaulk that later too).

I live in southeastern Michigan and we had a great increase in the number of lady beetles this summer. Several dozen managed to get in the house. I bought a bugzooka from Amazon...you cock it and when you trigger it it creates a suction that deposits insects into a container that can hold them until you release them outside. It's now February (getting over a foot of snow today) and I still find them on occasion...I just leave them alone during winter. Keep up the good work!

I just stumbled upon your channel and have subscribed. We moved to a different part of Georgia a couple of years ago. There are some different insect species here in the NW part of the state than we had in the eastern suburbs of Atlanta and I often see insects and spiders here that I am not familiar with. It has been surprising for me to experience such differences in both flora and fauna since we only moved 100 or so miles. Since I garden, I am always researching which varieties are beneficial and which might be harmful. I look forward to perhaps learning about some of those new-to-us species on your channel. We did, of course, have lady beetles at the old house and we do have them here. Is there a way to differentiate the Asian invaders from our native ladybugs?

Hi Vluneford!!!! First: I AM SO GLAD YOU FOUND ME! So, yeah, I agree with your regional insect variation observations. Yesterday, my son...who lives in Chattanooga sent me a photo of my grandson with an insect I had never seen. The front half a mantis...the back have a neuropteran! So yeah..never seen that in my life ( I am in southwest VA). Yes... ck video again...for the "m" on the pronotum....garunteed positive ID ..if they have the M it is asian LB..if not it is a native! I think you would enjoy my insect playlist for sure and many others. What is your local habitat? Mountains, rolling hills flat...deciduous forest ? farm lands! Thank you. That was very interesting. l learned a lot. As a child I loved finding a lady bug, and never hurt them. We would always release them and say "Lady bug, lady bug, fly away home." I didn't realize that the Asian beetles were different and were harming our domestic Lady bugs. That's really too bad. Seems like so many bugs and plants from that area are harming our domestic things. Thank you for such a thorough explanation about them. I really enjoyed it. I live in Michigan and I discovered a small group of Asian lady beetles, about 6 or 7, huddled together in one of the upper corners of the living room during late Autumn sometime in the 90's. They'd crawl around every now and then but for the most part, they seemed content to just hang out in the upper corners of the living room. Seeing as there weren't very many of them, I just let them be. When the warmer months arrived, they were nowhere to be found. They must've found their own way out. They were the quietest and most non-intrusive roommates I ever had! 😄

Removed off the ceiling and then went to Home Depot and replaced it with a fan that had NO openings on the top and almost nothing open expect where the blades turn. For anyone who wants to verify that these things bite do this. Gently place one on your forearm and wait. It may move around at first but at some point it will stop. Then you will begin to notice a slight stinging sensation. It doesn't have a stinger so it is biting you! I suppose since it is carnivorous it recognizes you as protein so is trying to feed. There would be no other reason for it to bite you.

Hi Luke Langer! Good questions...this from University of Kentucky: At present, Asian lady beetles appear to have few natural enemies. Have you done an episode on muffleheads? When I worked at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Oh, for about two weeks in May, we were coated in these things. They looked like very large mosquitos but didn’t sting. Some people also called them Canadian Soldiers. Anyway, it was horrible. Every morning, you could not tell the colors of the building or cars because they would settle on everything overnight. They traveled in huge clouds. During the day, they stayed on the shady side of the park where I worked. We did not get many visitors during that time because when people wandered in and realized it was coated in insects, people literally screamed and ran. They kept flying into our burgers on the grill and we finally gave up trying to grill anything. I have not been able to find any information on them.

I take a foam paint applicator, a piece of foam on a plastic stick, and knock the lady bugs off my windows and into a cold jar which I'd kept in the freezer. The foam applicator doesn't seem to hurt the lady bugs. Because the jar is cold, the lady bugs slow down and don't try to fly back out, so I can keep the lid off while I knock dozens into the jar, before it begins to get warm. I then put the lid with some small holes in it on the jar, and put it in the refrigerator. I later release them into my garden, where I have some upright small logs with a bunch of 3/8" holes drilled into them as lady bug habitats. Lady bugs (beetles) are great at keeping aphids and spider mites off my tomato plants. Another beneficial garden insect are those small, skinny wasps, I don't know, what they are called, but they kill a lot of hornworms which can be so devastating to a tomato crop. I don't think, that those kind of wasps sting people. At least, I've never been stung by them.

@natureatyourdoor3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jimmy ..thanks for nice compliments! So the science on this now is that 1. Insecticide house "foggers" won't work because most are in cracks and crevices that it won't reach. Topical insecticides that require the insect to walk across them to pick up...well they will die ...and you have to vacuum them up anyway! So...not a lot of point in health risks of indoor insecticide versus effectiveness. Try this ..a pan of water with detergent in it...and shine a light on it at night! I am including this technique that Virginia tech researched on stink bugs...next Friday episode. It was proven to work on stink bugs...should work with lady bugs too!

YES, THEY DO BITE!!! Never had the orange ones that bite as a kid. Played with the red ones all time. 70s. I didn't start seeing the evil biting orange ones until late 90s?

Yes Tamira! Correct! I did exactly the same in 70's . I just released a new video last Friday called "Lady Bugs Bite" bases on feedback from viewers like you to investigate EXACTLY the phenomena you described! Watch that video and check back with me in comments and we will continue this discussion Tamra!

Wow these things are obnoxious! Just moved to Virginia. Renting a house in a rural area till my apartments ready. Paper towels with clove oil in cracks around windows and covered that with masking tape for an extra seal. I’m like: “yo, bugs. There’s a whole empty house over there y’all can have. Leave this one alone!” They don’t listen well. I’m looking forward to an apartment with pest control 👍
