Most interesting, kind sir. We've been invaded by these "not so nice & annoying beetles" for at least 15+ yrs. We 1st saw them when we did Wine Tour on Pelée Island ON near Lake Erie. We were informed they'd been imported to protect soya beans. We reside in rural Eastern Ontario. We detest them.Standing doing dishes, I get bitten on back of neck! We can vacuum them 3x/day. No way to be rid of them. Be sure to plug vacuum intake after use, otherwise they crawl out. We empty bag of bugs into boiling water & some bleach. Good luck!!

I was once bitten a very long time ago, and was very surprised by it. It is very good to know the difference between the invasive and non-invasive varieties. I don't know if you previously mentioned this issue, but ladybugs (the native species, at least) can have wasp larval parasites, and that can be one reason their numbers are dwindling. I've got a story about lady bug biting I'd like to share. Many years ago when the wife and I were younger we took a vacation out west and during that vacation we visited the National Observatory on top of Kitt Peak, Arizona just south of Tucson. This had to be early in August as the time of year. After seeing the observatories and telescopes at the National Observatory we were descending the steep winding road going down the mountain when we observed a strange looking 'growth' on the side of some trees and boulders. Stopping to check it out I found that these 'growths' were nothing but masses and masses of lady buys. Fascinated I reached down with both hands and scooped up thousands of the little critters. Told the wife, "Hey make a photo of this"!. Before she could retrieve the camera the little buggers started biting with gusto and I got rid of them shaking my arms and using a few words from the sailors dictionary. After viewing your video on lady bug biting I am assuming what I got a double armload of was the Asian Lady Bug which you say does bite. I suffered no ill effects from this exposure other than a slight burn on the inside surface of my arms for a few minutes. I've told friends about this episode several times and was looked at with some skepticism. Now I can qualify this story by explaining that some lady bugs DO bite.

I've been bitten before by them, and it was quite intense. I think, like people, every bug is a bit different from every other bug (yes beetle). So I think I just got one that was very aggressive and was not taking kindly to me, or maybe it was just not super smart and thought maybe I was food. Cross species identification is usually tough (meaning I can look at humans and clearly tell them apart, but all bugs look the same to me even if every one is different from every other one). So with that in mind, I think some are just bitey while others are not.

I take a foam paint applicator, a piece of foam on a plastic stick, and knock the lady bugs off my windows and into a cold jar which I'd kept in the freezer. The foam applicator doesn't seem to hurt the lady bugs. Because the jar is cold, the lady bugs slow down and don't try to fly back out, so I can keep the lid off while I knock dozens into the jar, before it begins to get warm. I then put the lid with some small holes in it on the jar, and put it in the refrigerator. I later release them into my garden, where I have some upright small logs with a bunch of 3/8" holes drilled into them as lady bug habitats. Lady bugs (beetles) are great at keeping aphids and spider mites off my tomato plants. Another beneficial garden insect are those small, skinny wasps, I don't know, what they are called, but they kill a lot of hornworms which can be so devastating to a tomato crop. I don't think, that those kind of wasps sting people. At least, I've never been stung by them.

We noticed that the tiny monarch caterpillars were disappearing quickly after hatching. We had used netting to prevent birds from eating the caterpillars. The only predator we noticed that might have been eating the tiny caterpillars were Asian lady beetles. Have you ever observed lady beetles feeding on small caterpillars, or do they primarily eat aphids?

For years, I would scoop up every beetle I could find in the house when they swarmed inside. Thinking they were ladybugs that ate all things bad for plants, I gleefully just put them all on my potted houseplants. Later I learned these were invasive Asian beetles! They tend to clump up in groups of a dozen or more in the corners of our ceilings and, as you noted, around light fixtures (especially fluorescent ones, for some reason). We just vacuum them up and destroy them outside. (Anything invasive is bad for native species and should be controlled or destroyed.) Thanks for your informative videos!

Perhaps our native species do the same as a last resort of survival?

I've never been bitten by native or Asian lady beetles inside. It was always while I was outside picking mulberries. There were tons of Asian lady beetles all over the mulberries. They were probably eating the bazillions of tiny bugs on the fruit that weren't apparent until the tiny black specks would crawl out as the fruit sat in the buckets while we picked or in bowls on the counter. It seemed to me at the time as though the lady beetles were guarding their food source which we were taking away by picking the fruit. They even seemed to be guarding the whole tree because they would fly over and bite even if I wasn't actively picking at the time but was still right there by the tree. I have seen other insects that were territorial, so I don't doubt that these guys could have been. The bites did hurt. It was similar to a horse fly bite, only not quite as bad. Almost, though. I never noticed a mark left. And my skin didn't itch at all. They didn't seem to be chewing on me or trying to get to my blood. It really just seemed to mean, "Go away!" I never had a native lady bug behave in this way.

I actually have 3 Asian lady beetles I'm taking care of. And they have never bit or pinched me. I've given them many chances to bite, or pinch me, but they never did bite, or pinch. Given the situation they are in, I don't hurt them, I provide them with food, and water. They are (to me) fun to take care of. I've learned quite a bit about them in the process. I plan on keeping them, and seeing how long they can live when in captivity, being taken care of. Ironically Google said that they only live 2 weeks in captivity, but surprisingly, one of mine made it to 9 weeks. I guess others aren't as persistent in taking care of them as I am. Ladybug, or Asian lady beetles, I love them both.

What are you feeding them. They are predators mostly on Aphids. If they over winter they will need low temperatures to slow metabolism so they can make it to spring on stored energy reserves!

Also looks like a lady bug. I had several bite me as I was cutting down the plants. The bite hurt and I had large red circles from the bite that itched and lasted for 3 weeks.- like an infection. I also found some bugs that were longer (black and yellow) and they seemed like they hatched from the yellow and black bug. I still am wondering what these were. Have to do more research.

I have indeed been bitten!!! Multiple times!! For some reason they love to winter in every building on my property - house, barn and garage. They swarm by the thousands on the first sunny, warm day after we've had our first heavy frost with a few cold nights in the low 30's (NW PA). I'm expecting the invasion sometime this week 🙁

I may. I have made "lantern" traps with white one gallon milk jugs, soapy water in the bottom inch and an electric candle light inverted through the pour spout. They work well and take up less space. I think, however, that the reflective property of the aluminum pan might be more 'attractive' to the beetles (pun intended).

When we find a Ladybug in our house in the winter, we put them into our potted plants. This way they get moisture when we water the plants, and we are guessing, they are getting food from the plant itself.
@natureatyourdoor2 жыл бұрын
Being strictly carnivores they are not likely gaining nutrition from the plant but in diapause they really don't need to eat...water yes..if temp are cool they may survive the winter indoors.

Ive played with ladybugs my whole life and today was the first time one bit me, but it was a very strange experience. There were two ladybugs lying on a plant (separately) and I wanted to see what would happen if I grabbed them both in my hand. My guess is the first one I grabbed was a male because it was smaller and calmer(also it was orange, not red), but as soon as I approached the other ladybug with the male one in my hand it "jumped" and clinged to my index finger (the other ladybug flew away after the female jumped and "attacked" me). At first I didn't know what was happening I just felt like being poked with an eyebrow tweezer but very gently and then i saw the ladybug, she was really trying to bit me as hard as she could. And she was kinda crazy, I even had to pull her a little bit to get her back into the plant and she was walking fast, like crazy, not in a slow or calm pace like they usually do... It was pretty interesting.
