I think that Eloise and Lady Danbury have the same end goal of being successful and respected but have very different ways they go about it. Lady Danbury wants people to respect her by making herself terrifying. Eloise wants people to respect her for her mind and ideas. Edit: Eloise wants success through herself but Lady Danbury wants it through status and marriage. I feel like that's the most fundamental difference between them because of how opposed to marriage Eloise is.

I know it’s a bit of a spoiler for those who haven’t read the books, but it is mentioned in one them that Lady D was just like Penelope Featherington, a social outcast. She takes a liking to Penelope in the books, I think much more than daphne, who probably reminded her of her best friend and daphne’s predecessor the former duchess. Lady D became a matron only those similar or same intellect could understand. She was the true hero of this book series.
