*I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. Hey Jersh, so let me break some things down to you. Gaga said in the past that Judas is about her going back to an ex-boyfriend and still being in love with someone that has betrayed her. But honestly that’s the simpler version of what it is truly about. She also said that she had to go through bad times to become who she is now. “The idea that Judas was the ultimate betrayer, but if that had never occurred, the ultimate prophecy of life would not have been fulfilled. So it’s a metaphor for struggle and perseverance.” With the music video she also wants to question the public with the statement: “If they were not who you were taught that they would be, would you still believe?” Although she is using religious references she never meant to attack on religion as she is a devoted catholic. The music video came out on Easter weekend It was an extremely controversial release when it came out in 2011 and Radio and Media boycotted her by not playing the song/video and/or blacklisting her

I always found it so funny that nobody except extreme Christian fundamentalists even care anymore. Like Poppy came out with BLOODMONEY and more people were going 'Oh she's beating people to death with a crowbar. Oh yeah there's also a cross near the end'. Fun fact: You did see the biker betrayal. Judas gave Jesus a kiss(known as the kiss of Judas) to identify Jesus to the authorities which lead to his arrest and, later, his crucifixion. In the video, Judas gives Jesus that same "kiss of Judas" which is followed by Gaga(who plays Mary Magdalene) falling to her knees in despair.

This is still my favorite Gaga song. To me this is everything she used to represent: creativity, art, kickass music, controversy, great choreography and cinematography, the works. I'm glad she's branched out more into the mainstream, but I don't think we'll ever get "this Gaga" back, and that's a bit sad to me.

The religious imagery in the costumes is great. I just noticed that when she sings the line about building a house, she pats Peter on the back; in the bible, Jesus refered to him as "the rock" on which the church would be built (and Peter means "rock"). Also, the look of disappointment on Jesus' face throughout the video *kills* me, I love him.

I know this is an older video but I wanted to add- Norman Reedus has appeared in a number of music videos! The first I ever saw him in (which I didn’t know was him until a few months ago because it’s from 1994 lol) was “Violently Happy” by Bjork. It has a Biblical storyline where Reedus played Judas Iscariot Gaga played Mary Magdaline. "The King" is Jesus. The video portrays them as modern day missionaries going to Jerusalem. It included the Biblical story of Judas betraying Jesus, and ended with Gaga as Magdalene getting stoned to death.. The religion is represented here because she sings about being in love with the wrong person, someone who betrayed her (judas) and then compare herself to Mary Magdalene as she is torn apart between Jesus and Judas in a Jerusalem looking set then in the end she being stoned to death because considered as a whore.. "Judas" is a tribute to the dark things that happen in your life and that made you into who you are today. It's a tribute to the pain that she uses as an artist. She uses the metaphor of Judas' betrayal of Jesus where Judas symbolizes the dark turn of events that led to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus (the focal point of Christianity). In a way Judas ends up being responsible for the way Christianity is today... The same way that dark events in our past can help us become someone better or in this case create heartfelt and meaningful content such as marry the night, dope, Joanne, angel down, princess die, etc...
