The Edge Of Glory is about living life fully, as if you're on the verge of death, when nothing else matters. Being completely free. It's Gaga's 'carpe diem' or 'live each day as if it were your last'. She wrote the song after a conversation with her grandfather on his death bed over some whiskey, when he felt completely freed of any of his prior earthly worries, comforted by his impending death. "Another shot before we kiss the other side, I'm on the edge of something final we call 'life' tonight". The music video originally had a *huge* production (as you mentioned, this was her career peak) including multiple massive sets and an underwater mermaid set, which some think she re-used the idea in You And I. But the directors fought so tirelessly that at the last minute Gaga sent the directors and dancers home, scrapped it all and said "turn on those cameras and film" and improvised on that one set. Clarence Clemons improvised that saxophone solo in the studio in *one* take, and in an oddly fitting way for a song about life and death, this was his last performance before he passed away shortly after the video was released. This set is an ode to her life growing up on the New York streets, having fun and feeling completely free. That's why she kisses the pavement in that closeup shot. The costumes in this video are all custom Versace made just for her and this video. Gaga still has a strong friendship with Donatella Versace to this day! Also, the hat she wears when she's sitting on the steps was her grandfathers 😊
@musemin45904 жыл бұрын
I feel like the video is her love letter to New York. The streets that made her. The wardrobe is definitely significant because it represents what she used to wear and still does - just underwear and skyscraper heels. Leather jackets. Metal. Here it was art directed into something more substantial of course, with her working very closely with the house of Versace and Donatella in this era. She goes from climbing the walls and bending around fire escapes to kissing the ground. It’s the fight. It built her. And then there’s the whole Clarence layer which is life imitating art in itself. It’s underrated and really stunning.

yeah you're totally right about that time, we'd stan anything she did 😂 but the music video was supposed to be bigger in production, I don't know what really happened but Gaga and Joseph Kahn, the director, were having different thoughts/ideas on the creation for the video, and they already had the production all set, so after all the disagreements Gaga just asked to record her singing and dancing on the set. Sad, it's such a beautiful song, and it should've been bigger. Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist, died 2 days after the video was released. 😞

My guess is that the original music video was going to follow that concept.

this song is just so bittersweet to me - the beat always makes me want to smile and dance, but the lyrics and the meaning of the song make me want to sob. in an interview during the btw era, the interviewer asked what the song was about and gaga answered that it was about her grandpa "who passed The Edge into His Glory" and she wrote it right before he died. the interviewer then asked why it was such an upbeat song, and i can forever hear her saying "because his life was glorious - and LIFE is glorious" and it has always stuck with me. her mind just amazes me.

My interpretation is that the building is on fire and thus she's scaping from it and although her life is in danger she´s dancing and rejoicing herself cause despite the difficulties, life is glorious and worth living. So instead of crying about it she goes down to the streets to dance and finally she goes back to the bulding cause "it isn't hell if everybody knows her name"

I really always enjoy your reactions! Next Lady Gaga's album you need to experience is 1) Joanne then 2) ARTPOP then 3) The Fame Monster and then 4) The Fame (I think you should end your gaga's album journey with this album because it was her first one and it may be interesting to see how she progressed and improved herself since but also hearing how amazing she was already with her debut album) or maybe listening to The Fame before The Fame Monster since these 2 albums are like Ying and Yang, one is about the Fame as a topic to study and the other one you will discover it by yourself! And then you still have a lot of gaga's content to react as her best performances or her most surprising ones! Don't worry with lady gaga's reactions you can only be sustainable, she did so much in not that much time! Also I really hope she will soon perform some Chromatica songs, I miss her live performance and little spoiler: HER LIVE PERFORMANCES SOUND EVEN BETTER THAN HER STUDIO VERSIONS and that's not even a joke! She is one of the only recent artists that sounds way better live than in studio! So that's why when she starts a new era it's usually a double gift! We have the studio songs that are all amazing and high quality and then we have the live performances and the tour that are outstanding! But this time with corona her performances plans were cancelled or postponed to as soon as possible and for now Chromatica is the only era with no live performances when she used to do a lot before releasing an album!

Jersh: Watches TEOG KZbin Algorithm: FINALLY! Haha. It was 3rd single after it got great reception as a pre album promo in May 2011. (also pushed back MARRY THE NIGHT again, acc. to Gaga it was considered 1st, 3rd and then finally 5th single). as others have said one of the meanings is about her Grandfather. CLARENCE CLEMONS is the saxophone player (from BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN's E STREET BAND), sadly he passed a couple weeks after this came out. Video also was considered a tad bit tame/understated by Gaga's crazy video rep at the time, rumours the original idea was around a mermaid/wheelchair amongst other things but ended up scrapped and we got this (The mermaid idea may have been used in the YOU & I video). The Google Ad ft. the song I thought was great, had her dancing on a NYC bridge, but this video is still cool too. The AMERICAN IDOL performance is interesting. Lastly could you please react to BORN THIS WAY (COUNTRY ROAD VERSION) and the MOTORBIKE ALBUM COVER in your wrap up! :)
