Thor has not always been a title held by Thor himself. Over at Marvel comics others have wielded Mjlonir and found themselves taking on the mantle of Thor. One such person is long time Thor love interest Jane Foster. While some fans may be aware of her turn as Thor from the (at the time of typing) upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder, there is a longer history there. One that extends all the way back to the 70s and Marvel What If? When Classic Marvel comics asked the question, what if Jane Foster had found the hammer of Thor? The answer she becomes Thordis (yes Thordis not Lady Thor)The story promises a shocking twist will you see it coming? Find out here on Casually Comics!

In the mythology, Odin actually had 3 wives, and was known to...indulge himself with others from time to time, so even if he had still been married, proposing to Jane would not have been out of character from a mythological standpoint (although probably a bit TOO progressive tor comics in the 70's).

Thordis sounds like a better name, it gives Jane more pertinency as a female hero and less of some offshoot of a male hero like the name Lady Thor though a wholly different name would have made the character her own but I see why they needed to mention Thor to keep the continuity with the hammer. I am not too keen on the idea of marrying off Jane, the idea of going back to Earth and being her own hero and maybe finding someone else was much better.

That’s straight outta the mythology. Getting your hair shaved was a punishment for loose morals, so the implication is that he might have tricked her into doing the nasty with him and then cut her hair off while she was sleeping. Or maybe he just snuck in and took her hair to give a false impression of that other stuff. Thor and Sif are super upset about it, but Thor either doesn’t get it, doesn’t fall for it or doesn’t care about the infidelity angle, because he and Sif are fine. They just both really want to murder Loki.

I started reading OG Thor comics a while back and Blake's constant self deprecation for his disability was pretty hard to read at times.Especially when I got invested in his story. It often felt like the comic was saying that because of his mild disability he wasn't allowed to be loved or that he was lesser. I found this in early Daredevil too. I know it's all melodrama and gets better over time but it sometimes felt like watching a friend hurt themselves over something insignificant.

The early days of Marvel had a chaotic energy that sometimes-produced amazing results and sometimes produced things like the tangled mess which is "how does this enchantment work and who is Don Blake anyway?" The origin story works well enough if you assume that Don Blake is just a guy who happened to find the hammer, but the instant you add "and he was Thor all along" the whole thing ceases to make logical sense.

@Fenrir You're way way off base here. The _actress_ Thora Birch got her name because her parents thought they were going to have a boy and chose the name "Thor." When she was born instead of changing the name they'd already chosen they simply added an "a" to the name. This has absolutely nothing to do with the Norse gods, nor the female form of the name Thor.

@Fenrir If I understand it correctly, they're going with "Mighty Thor" to correlate with the comics and doubling down on the idea that "Thor" is a title, not a name. Something else that's worth mentioning about *What If* is that the original run from the 70s and 80s were *annual-sized* issues, despite being a monthly book. This gave the writers a lot more room to breathe, either adding a prologue or including a back-up story to give you more bang for your buck. The run from the 90s onward (including the recent one-shots) settled for a standard size, which I think hurts them a bit when stuff like the "here's how the original history went" bit are gone.

As a effectively a full on Thor noob this feel like a good jump in point and reading list with the editorial notes if you aren't familiar with the lore with how much attention they give to "setting the scene" but due to that in turn makes the ending feel really rushed from Donald getting with Lady Sif to fighting to die for her alongside Gods, Loki getting wrapped up fast, Jane remembering her love for Donald, and Odin and Jane getting married (idk this one really weirds me out how she goes from son to father but fits with the antics these mythologies got up to and like you mentioned, Sif bouncing on Thor's knee). As for name I actually prefer Thordis as it differentiates and avoids the confusion of name/mantle as much, sidenote though Eric had it on point going with Thunderstrike instead (plus I just love Eric) or even Beta Ray Bill to an extent. Shocking romance: Thor choses to abandon his relationship with Lady Sif for not being able to move past his image of how he saw her as a kid bouncing on his knee. After the rejection she finds comfort in another man who faced rejection, Fandral.

"Captain America" and "Iron Man" are noms de guerre, so it's possible for multiple people to use them. But Thor is a proper name. Saying Jane Foster is the new Thor is like saying she's the new Steve Rogers.

When I first heard Christian Bale would be playing a mystery character in Thor 4, I was hoping it would be Donald Blake. Feel there’s still a place for Blake, in either the comics or movies. You’ve got a blonde, beach bodied deity who spends his down time as a top flight surgeon with a limp. That’s so absurd it’s awesome.

You know the original myth involving Mjolnir said that the hammer was so powerful that anyone who wield it and wasn’t strong enough would be destroy, so only Thor could have handle it. Yet there was a story involving Thor and Loki getting back the hammer for the King of the Frost Giant since he could also handle it without fail, and this involve Thor wearing a dress in the process. OSP video for more information (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWTcZaKLfMSMnaM) Jane Foster also wielded the hammer in the AVENGER ASSEMBLE show and was gifted the Thunderstrike mace, and she named herself after it except that was the only time we her as Thunderstrike. Weirdly enough after the WAR OF THE REALM event she actually became a Valkyrie. Also I think the name Thunderous, Thundress, Thundess, Thunderess, Thunddress, or something like that (a mixture of GODDESS and THUNDER). Finally I enjoy the Jane FosTHOR saga (only read the Pre-SECRET WAR and Volume One of the Mighty Thor run).

Odin giving Donald Blake back his true identity of Thor actually makes sense if you think about it. He believed he was just a mortal man and he willingly went to Asgard to fight along side Sif to defend Asgard. How could he not be considered worthy after something like that?

This was a bizarre trip. Honestly, the only problem with the more modern Jane Foster as Thor stories was in the act of Thor giving up the hammer and the name. Not that he did it, but the way it was handled and Fury's whisper never being able to pay off in a way that it would deserve. Also Jane deserves her own hero name distinct from Thor or Thorsdis, like Thunderstrike got.

Loki isnt the marring type, he gets around. HIs kids in the mythology include: Hel, the goddess of death; Jörmungand, the serpent that surrounds the world; and Fenrir (Fenrisúlfr), the wolf. Loki is also credited with giving birth to Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged horse. Thats right, Loki is into clopping and birthed an eigh-legged butt baby pony.

Loki does haves a wife in Norse Mythology named Sigyn and they had twin sons that Odin cursed and used the intestine of the dead twin to tie him to a rock with a poisonous snake who drips poison on Loki’s chest and Sigyn holds a bowl to stop the poison. It’s really tragic but if I recall, it’s punishment for Loki killing Balder.

One of the things that bothered me the most about “mighty (lady) Thor in the newer stuff is that Thor is a given name and there are a lot of derivatives of it that are still used today. Thora, Thordis, Thorunn, etc. So it wouldn’t have been hard to find a female version of the name. Also, I knew that the old Thor had him be a doctor with Jane a nurse, but I didn’t know how or why he had a secret identity.

We come for the comics...we stay for the salt. With regard to editors notes, when I first started reading comics back in the mid/late 70's they were all over the place. AT different times both Stan Lee and Julius Schwartz had been asked about them and both said basically the same thing, essentially their take was that you never know which comic is going to be someone's first and this helps to keep them from getting too frustrated if something is mentioned in story that happened in an earlier issue, or in a different title. It helps the reader understand what is going on, and gives them a reference point if they want to go back and find the other story and read it for themselves. Personally I was glad to have them when I first started reading comics (especially with Avengers, and Legion of Superheroes, man THOSE were some rabbit holes to be sure. I actually bought a lot of back issues at my local comic shop because of reference from those editors notes.
