Great questions and especially the last one. In high school (late 80's), I had to drop physics my senior year and take a home economics because I had assumed the computer science classes I took would fulfill the vocational requirements since I had worked professionally as a programmer the summers of my Sophomore and Junior years. My mom had already done a great job teaching me everything I learned in the home-economics class so this really was a waste of time at a critical time of learning and getting ready for college.

Holy girl card. I will say though, the first half of this video is the first time I've ever actually seen the president say something with interest and no noticeable alterier motive. Well done.

Never mind just teaching programming in high school. It can be taught to tiny kids way earlier using Scratch. This is not just got for leading the way into a full programming language it is also perfect for increasing their problem solving skills.

Well done!! Nothing like going to the top with your issues!! I like the requirement for a computer programming class. I was required to take one in College (FORTRAN) and became fascinated with programming.

Not that it matters but YOU ROCK! Also, here in Clark County we've been trying to teach young students how to make software and basic websites but when he or she can't figure it out, no answers from us. We train them how to FIND the answers cause we won't be with them when they're at home on an assignment. If they use others code, terrific but must explain the basics and why it would work. Lot of our hardware classes the people come to your site for examples and code.

I'm not sure he understands the issue. He said, "We've done a lot, but there's still a lot to be done. We need to bring all the stakeholders together and come to a consensus on what to do."

You rock, way to go girl! I love to see strong women in action. Awesome job supporting the open source maker/new manufacturing movement. We should have Open Source HackerSpaces as open active learning labs in schools and colleges.

What a great honor! I have a question Ladyada - what programming language(s) do you think should be taught at high schools in your opinion?

Wow! He gave great answers! I wish he could nail the Republicans with his wit like he did in the very beginning of his first term. I still like him; I just feel so let down. I want him to use the bully pulpit.

STEM is so far behind in the UK for the reason that politicians love to be able to say "Under our government pass grades have increased by 'five' percent!". The problem is that the curve is simply lowered. Has been since the 1960's. If you dig out a 'past-paper' from then and compare it to now you can see 2nd year university calculus being taught at the top of High school against basic trigonometry. The teachers union strangles the issue here. Is it the same in the USA? I am pretty sure eventually kids are going to walk into an exam and have to push beads on an abacus and we will still hear the same proclaimations of "Under our government the pass rate has risen by 25%!"

Adam Webster I'm going to be second-year HS student (in the US) going into Pre-Calculus. In our private school, math levels are decided by how well students perform during the "placement test" given before the school year starts. Public schools don't necessarily have this test, but they can have first-year students going into higher level math classes such as AP Calculus.

According to me they need to teach C-language because it is the basic language, based on which most of all the languages are made.

I worry all the time about my great ideas being stolen or being whumped by large tech firms. Then I google my idea for an app and I realise it has been done already. RFID is one to invest in though. Once the RFID becomes less hackable or jammable it will be a goldmine. Supermarkets will be able to fire all their staff and hire two security guards. To anyone who works in a supermarket you might want to consider learning I.T. :P
