Big Bear Eagles ~ A JUVIE STEALS JACKIE'S COOT!! 😊 Is That You Spirit? 🐦 12.5.22

This afternoon Jackie flies into the nest with a coot but a juvie is hot on her tail screaming! The juvie makes an attempt to steal it but is unsuccessful and flies around landing in the nest tree. Shadow heard the commotion and lands in the basement. Jackie takes the coot to the nest and starts to pick at it but she is watching the juvie that is perched above. She leaves the coot and flies up to the branch and the juvie hops down and and quickly grabs the coot and flies off with it!!
This is a first year juvie hatched in 2022 and very well could be Spirit! It was very exciting to see such a successful steal since hunting takes time and skill to perfect and the young eagles do have to rely on stealing prey to survive (otherwise known as kleptoparasitism). Thank you for watching!

What a big surprise!!! 😃My vote is that this IS Spirit!! The loud screaming was a giveaway plus Jackie let her have the coot meal. Some say eagle parents don't recognize past offspring but this scene shows otherwise. It was just wonderful to see Spirit again and now know she is not only still around but is alive and well! Yes, very obvious Jackie didn't eat the coot and chose to leap to higher branch so Spirit could "steal" the coot. And.... no one squees like Spirit, except Spirit!!

I agree 100%!! That had to be Spirit as no other kiddo I've heard has Spirit's squee. Jackie appeared way too "unnerved" by this encounter! Neither Jackie nor Shadow chose to chase the "intruder" out of the nest as well as the nest tree! To me, they are family when all is said and done! IMHO. 😀

Even though Jackie hasn't laid eggs yet or have any Eaglets in their nest... Do you honestly believe that if it wasn't Spirit, that JACKIE would tolerant any female in her nest tree? Let alone fly on her tail feathers coming in HOT or attempt/successfully steal her lunch? Jackie would do more that chortle! She would certainly defend and protect their nest from any intruder! And if this Juvie was a male that Shadow would tolerant it being in his nest tree? He would defend and protect Jackie from any intruder coz that's his job! I’m pretty sure it was spirit because for some reason Jackie would not finish eating and she kept thinking and also left the food there she probably had a feeling it was her as soon as Jackie took off spirit came and got the food how weird that was crazy to see, and it sounded just like her

J&S lay their eggs about a month later than Harriet and M15, and are about a month behind on nestorations. The fluff comes in last, which is a sign that Jackie will soon be laying eggs. The more you know. You can't really expect the nests to be the same across the country. The nest is 7500 ft above sea level, 145 ft up in a Jeffrey Pine. The nest will change a lot over the next month. Stay tuned!

It was a very exciting moment for sure! I always like to see the young eagles steal prey as it is hard for them to survive until they can hunt successfully on their own. This one surely has good instincts! I am so glad that you are having a good day AB!! ♥ We have to take the good days and really enjoy them. You are always in my thoughts and prayers my friend. I truly believe that that was spirit. Spirit was always a homebody. And mom and dad always liked to baby her. A parent is always a parent. And our kids are always our babies. I have a very strange feeling. After rewatching it a few times, it stroke me: the initial culprit is probably our beloved Jackie! The juvie (whether it's sweet Spirit or another youngster) is probably full of vocals and pursues chase *because* Jackie snatched their prey. I'm also wondering about Jackie not exactly enjoying that meal; she appears pounding the prey a few times (as if the poor thing is still alive) and at one point she stops de-feathering it, stares at her own feet and just hops away from the prey (impressive hops!). Then she just simply allows the juvie to snatch the prey. Maybe... that prey was not particularly fresh :/ Bald eagle juvies have certainly a hard life in their first few years, so I wouldn't be too surprised if the prey died of other causes before juvie came across it. Just a theory of course:) Must say though, those vocals sounded rather familiar, and the fact that neither J nor S tried their usual efforts to fend off the visitor *may* just mean they to know too well who is the youngster 🦅💚

It is a definite possibility. BAEA parents will likely recognize their offspring for about six months after final dispersal. With nesting season fast approaching they will want to encourage her to leave the area. It is hard to know for certain, but, nonetheless great to witness. A wonderful eagle contemplation Lady Hawk. I am more than sure that young man is Spirit and Mom Jackie knows it!! His protests were for the way Spirit he wanted to take possession of the prey. What a beautiful video capture this distance from Spirit’s fledge assuming it is Spirit and it does seem so very likely from the behavior I would think. So touching- We may have to brace ourselves for some tough love from Jackie and Shadow toward Spirit in the upcoming months. 🐣
