The part about mixed people and how castings really hone in that someone is "not enough" really says a lot about how society treats people too. You're always segregated as "one" or "the other" rather than being an experience of itself. If you look at the comments of any mixed person's videos/social channels there's nearly always going to be a debate about what race someone is. This discussion was so good you really enlightened me on so many issues. & I'm so grateful to be a part of this conversation with my own experiences too! I am excited for S&B!!!
@LadyJenevia3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for being so open about your experiences! I am incredibly grateful to you for sharing that to broaden the perspectives for this topic! It was always going to be easier for me to explain what mixed Asians experience because of both firsthand experience and the fact that I happen to have interviewed multiple mixed Asians. Now more than ever it feels essential to use our platforms to dispel misconceptions and stereotypes about Asians. However I also think that just by creating videos that are authentic to ourselves (about ANY topic) we’ve already been defying stereotypes for as long as we’ve been on this platform. 🇯🇵❤️🇳🇵

A bit of a tangent, so bear with me: the world really needs Inej right now. After the Atlanta Spa Shootings, in which 8 people (6 Asian women) were killed, the man responsible said he was not racially motivated, but instead driven by his sex addiction to target places he deemed as sources of his addiction; so he shot up 3 spas, all owned by Asian women. Not strip clubs. Not brothels. Asian-owned spas. And there were just too many people who seemed to think that was reasonable. Asian women need to stop being seen as sexual objects, but as PEOPLE. That's why I love Inej so much - she was trafficked from a very young age, fetishized by her abusers, and NOT ONCE does the story present Inej as lesser than her peers or in any way responsible for the abuse dealt to her. Inej is powerful, emotional, and human. Inej is allowed to be angry at her abusers, and she is allowed to feel fear. She leaps and falls and climbs, and she is so very wise, and she is allowed to fight back. The story never presents Inej's fear and anger as folly, but as emotions anyone would feel if they had gone what she has gone through. Inej was written with the care and respect her character deserves, and the rest of the world needs to start treating people like her with that same care and respect too.
@LadyJenevia3 жыл бұрын
YES TO ALL OF THIS! I hinted at some of this when I wrote my video (and partially muted some words) because KZbin loves to censor people who talk about these types of topics, especially when it’s coming from a smaller creator like myself who doesn’t have corporate backing or connections to swerve those systems. I wanted this video to be seen instead of being suppressed by the algorithms so I couldn’t get as specific as I otherwise would have. Thank you for writing it all out in the comment. That’s why I included the line about how ‘the fetishisation of Asian women puts us in a perpetual state of danger’. It’s a historical and ongoing problem but 100% relevant to what happened in Atlanta. There’s also a real problem of stigmatising s*x workers and dehumanising them. Rock M Sakura recently came out about having done s*x work before getting on Drag Race and it was wonderful for them to share that to try to help break down those stigmas against such a vulnerable group of people.

You put in words on why Inej is one of the most important characters to so many girls. Her character literally makes my heart cry because of how much she resonates in me. I love her so much and all my female characters I have made ever since always took inspiration from her strength and strong sense of dignity. ♡ fetishes targetting asian woman is honestly so disgusting I'm glad the topic is being pulled more into the light.

@@Ari-ij3cz She is an incredibly unique character in the sense that there are plenty of people who can relate to the things she has experienced in her life BUT it’s far too rare that a Hollywood story puts those experiences on display specifically in the hero/heroine’s story or if they do they always find a way to make it gross or weird or something equally as horrible.

I'm relatively new to the Grishaverse but I'm slowly making my way through all the books and I really enjoy that they chose to make Alina half-Shu in the adaption. Hopefully they will get to explore it with the complexity it deserves in the show. I think the reason it's such an emotional experience for Asians to see other Asians that are from their countries/look like them portrayed in media is because of both the historical whitewashing of Hollywood and the fact that Asia is such a vast continent yet we all get subsumed under a single monolith. I also hope Shadow and Bone will be successful to open up the doors for adapting more Asian stories/series since there are so many great ones out there!

Having interviewed one of the show's writers I definitely feel good about the approach the creative team have taken to this show. I haven't watched any of the episodes yet but my gut instinct is telling me that I'm going to love it. It's also very important that they made this change to the source material because the author definitely stereotyped 'East' Asians into a big bad monolith since the Shu are seen as the enemy of Ravka in the same way that the Western world has historically and continues today to scapegoat the larger Asian continent (with a particular emphasis on China) as an enemy. This is a really important topic to talk about, so I am really glad that you made this video. I am not Asian or mixed, but as a mexican living in Latinamerica, It really inspires me to see new faces and countries represented in mainstream media. I know that is really annoying when people don't realize that a WHOLE continent is more than just two or three "popular" countries, like when people thing that Latinamerica is only Mexico and Brazil and are both the same, and do not see that it is so much more than that. I am so excited to see the show! I will probably drop all my homework to watch it, but I know it'll be worth it.
@LadyJenevia3 жыл бұрын
There definitely needs to be more diversity in Latin representation too! Not just in fantasy, but all genres! I don't know THAT much about the differences between all the countries across Latin America but I can definitely tell that Hollywood has a couple of stereotypes and tropes they like to use to homogenise people with ancestry from those places. It's annoying and ignorant. I also see people who are more familiar with the entertainment media from those places say that colourism is a huge problem in the broader Latin markets which is a large reason why Everybody Hates Chris became such a massive hit in Brazil.

I love this video and wasn't expecting the conversation to go in this direction 💕 thank you for making this. I'm biracial and get disheartened when I find a biracial character in a book or movie but it's written by a white author who doesn't care about accurately representing our experience they just want to try out diversity. On top of that, we get accused by our fellow POC for getting privileges, when it's more like biracial characters are being used to suit the desires of people who aren't us. That doesn't benefit us, that's an insult. Biracials most likely have our own identity issues to deal with without taking on the crap that is being piled on from both sides imo. I've come across a number of videos that shame biracial/mixed people for being visible and there is growing pressure for us to give up roles to more deserving POCs. If a role is specifically written for monoracial POC then I agree biracial should NOT go for those roles, but where does our erasure end? There are always going to be groups that are more deserving of attention, so giving up the meager roles biracial/mixed people land is just going to result in our likeness being erased from public view. There isn't enough of us to be vocal so other groups can dictate how we're supposed to feel about ourselves. It tires me out sometimes when I try to defend biracials/mixed people when I feel like the only one voicing these thoughts. Instead of asking biracials to delete ourselves from view, we should all just be demanding for more opportunities. POC creators need to keep creating POC main characters. I completely relate to what Chistina said because when I first started writing stories my main characters were all monoracial and mostly white but now I try to make most of my MCs mixed.

Unrelated but remember when Netflix made the white detective from Death Note a black person? Good times, I liked the actor's performance but the script was not smart, as the manga, anime or the other movies were

Great video - but just wanted to let you know that south asians are not from the Middle East. South Asians are considered people from Indian, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc. Whereas, Middle Eastern people are often considered Arabs from countries like Syria, Lebanon, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Oman, etc.

My point was in reference to the way that people who have ancestry from a lot of those countries are subjected to the same types of racial profiling and stereotyping as each other. The people doing harm to them will just look at them, what they look like, how they dress, listen to an accent and/or subjectively foreign language and make those judgements. People across West and South Asian regions get homogenised the same way East and Southeast Asians get homogenised even though all of these countries have different languages, cultures, etc. If I didn't explain that properly, that's what I meant. A lot of these topics are really dense so it was admittedly a challenge to try to keep the script focused on just what was more immediately relevant to the show's talent and the groups they most directly represent. I was also stressing about trying to get this video finished in a timely manner before the show premiered. 😆

@@LadyJenevia Yes, I understood your message, I really did think it was all very well explained and I completely agree with you, being asian myself. I just thought I’d point that info out just in case it was something you didn’t know or just a easy mistake from the tongue. Again sorry if my message came out as being bossy or something i wasn’t trying to take away from the message of your video - which is something that should be highlighted more in society.
