He's so right about this. I was the excited "kid" in San Diego, crewing in whatever for 2 years. Told some sailors I'd saved 4000 bucks and they found me a sweet steal on a Tartan 30. The guy had 2 boats, just like in the video, and he said the same thing to me.. I'd like to see her go on to be used and taken care of. Best 3 years! I sailed all of SoCal, island and up a bit. I "gave" her away to a similar young guy starting a family. What a sweet little history sailors have.

Great episode. A worthy new owner is far more important to a loving owner than dollars. I gave away my last boat to a young lad who was fanatical about sailing. He used to torment me to bring him out and was a quick study. I posed him problems and then asked him why is she not happy, she should be a half knot faster in this breeze. he was not a theory sailor he was a problem solver. I loved passing on what i had learned over the years, gave out like duck to him when he wasnt watching his business . I shouted man overboard and jumped over the stern rail with a bottle of beer in my hand. That was the prelude to learning how to heave to. His mum and dad both cried the evening he took them out as captain of his own ship. He has indeed been a great successor and consults me regularly on proposed changes or improvements . It has given me so much joy.

I purchased a 1986 Catalina 25 for $500. It came with two working outboards; one of which I sold for $1,250, so the net effect was I got a free boat worth $5,000 plus $750 cash. The reason? The swing keel cable had snapped. That's it.

I bought a ‘84 Hunter 34 on the cheap: $2K. Boat was clean but needing love. 3- cyl Yanmar w/ only 1100 hours was clean, but needed usual maintenance. Took her to the boat yard- had the bottom done, all through hulls replaced, packing gland repacked and prop shaft replaced. Keel bolts were fine. Then off to get replacement seat covers, sails checked out by local sail maker and new sunguard sewn on; new running rigging installed. Got her detailed and the top deck professionally painted. Got mechanicals, plumbing, pumps and appliances all dialed in. She is now just about done: mechanically sound and looking great. She has a V-berth, an aft cabin, working appliances and head . She is big enough and comfortable enough to live on. She should be a capable Bay and Coastal cruiser . One year later and I’m at in at about $17K. Circumstances of purchase were that a marina was closing and tenants had to move their boats or have then scrapped by the City owned Marina. I bought the boat from an elderly woman who had moved out of state and was planning on turning her boat over to the City to be destroyed. I am grateful to her for allowing me to buy the boat; she was grateful to find a new owner that would continue to love her boat as she had years earlier.

I love my 1992 Catalina 28. Yes, 28; not 27 It has a 10’2” beam, a wheel, and a sugar scoop. Also hot pressurized water, Dodger and Bimini. Inboard diesel. Got it for $17,000 a year ago. It wasn’t listed for sale in the usual places, but on one of the sailing forums!

"An hour racing is worth more than a week sailing" - So true. I was fortunate enough to sail with a former America's Cup sailor who is very well respected around the San Francisco Bay. I had been sailing since I was 12 years old, having sailed in everything from a canoe to 50+ footers. In one day sailing with Capt. I learned more about how to handle a boat than I had in my 40+ years of sailing. I also got to race with him a couple of times and again learned so much in so short of a time that the real issue was trying to retain everything he taught me. Whenever possible, go out with people who know more than you do. You will be amazed as how much you can learn. Another great video.

What boats don’t sail well?

You have mixed up two models here. There is a Pearson 30, and the later Pearson 303. They are both built by Pearson, they are both 30 footers, but they are NOT the same boat. They also sail quite differently with the older Pearson 30 being more tender and faster, while the latter Pearson 303 is stiffer, more roomy, and slower.

Do you have experience with both models? Do you like the 303 and/or 323? I have a Pearson 30, and boy, it is a very active sailing boat lol. Fast, but I am already ready for something steadier. Looking at a Grampian Classic 31, a Pearson Vanguard, and a Eastward Ho 31.

Yes - I have sailed the Pearson 30, and the Pearson 303. The Pearson 30 was built to be a racer /cruiser. The Pearson 303 was built to be a crusier and not much of a racer. I sail a Morgan 30 which is every bit as "lively" and tender as you perceive your Pearson 30 to be. She heels a lot, and can quickly become a wet ride when the waves are up. All I can tell you is that it is possible to sail your boat in a less active manner if you choose to - basically reefing the main earlier and using smaller jibs. But, if heeling and spray in the face are not what you are looking for - then a Pearson 303 will be a better fit. My wife and I chartered a Pearson 303 many years ago on San Francisco Bay for a week. We carried a 90% jib and a reefed main the whole week, and rarely dipped the rail. It was not a speedster, but it was comfortable. The Pearson 303 is a much more sedate and docile sailor than the Pearson 30. Having sailed both, I would prefer sailing the older Pearson 30 over the Pearson 303. I have seen the Pearson 323, and admired the design - but have never sailed one. I imagine it is closer to the Pearson 303 in sailing style.

I am a new sailor having just finished my basic cruising standard course. My son bought a MacGregor 26S and we sailed her for the first time yesterday on Georgian Bay. It was great! According to Navionics we maxed out at 7.7 knots in a broad reach with following 3 foot waves. Not sure how good that is (or how accurate Navionics is) but I believe our hull is only good for 6 to 8 knots, so I am happy. I know some don't like the MacGregors but I like being able to trailer it at will, and it saves us a lot on slippage fees. I am just now looking around and contacting clubs as I would like to crew. I have been told that is the best way to learn and I am really looking forward to it! I might be a little late for this season, but we'll see. At least now I know what I can do when the water is too stiff to sail ... I can watch your videos! I appreciate your videos very much and the fact that you are local Ontario just like me. Great video, there are lots of deals out there, especially if your not afraid of an older boat and a little elbow grease . ( though there are certainly some walk away from boats) you should really go see a few and understand what you are looking at, that sleek hobie 30 or Jboat with the nice new harken gear sure would be fun on race night, but not very comfortable for regular sailing or over nighters and lets face it they are a lot of work to sail . My issue is where to keep the boat. Luckily I have a spot at a marina in Halifax that is roughly 3500 a year, but most places are far more expensive and have years + of waiting lists for a mooring ball and even longer for a slip . It makes it hard for someone new in the community to get started. Buying a boat is the cheap and easy part.

I had a Silverton 31 Fly Bridge. It was old but in great shape. My situation changed and was living most of the year 1/3 of the US away. The guy who had the slip next to me asked if I was interested in selling. His brother in law passed away and his sister wanted a boat to spend the summer on. The Starboard engine was giving me some heartburn, I disclosed that and that was fine with him. I got rid of the boat without additional cost and his sister now had a floating cottage next to her brother. Everyone was happy.

You are right. Some sailors want to sell a boat to someone who will care of or it. I bought a Skookum well under it's value for just that reason. After several conversations, he said he wanted me to own it and offered it at a great price. Joining a sailing club is a good start.

Too much emphasis is on these being “starter boats”. For many retirees, these will be the ONLY sailboat they will ever be able to afford! Get A Boat NOW!!! I also am a new retiree and wished I had bought a boat earlier. Now retired, we don’t need two cars; we sold one and got the boat! I’ve seen several people DIE without realizing their dreams; some younger than me. At the end, you’ll regret much more you didn’t do than what you did do. Get what you can afford, NOW.

I wanted to mention my experience crewing at small Yacht club. I went a bit farther than just crewing during races. A few times a year I would just show up and help mow the lawn or mop the heads in the clubhouse as well as crew on various boats. After a few weeks, one skipper/owner bought me a set of good foul weather gear to use on his boat, and after a few months I was offered the use of a Sunfish and Wildflower and if I kept it from sinking from rainwater, a 24' Raven class racing boat. so there are many perks that can come from crewing and people will notice If you help maintain the club.

A word from a duffer: I don’t have a sailboat. I’d love to, but….life. Having said that, I just saw a Catalina 30’ for $9k. Financed for 5 years at $180/mo. I can dock it at a convenient marina for $400/mo. Now, I’m sure the boat is going to need work. So, if i budget $300-ish a month, that’s about $20k over 5 years. All in, that’s right at $1000/month. After 5 years, the only obligation is slip fees. For us with modest budgets, that doesn’t sound so bad, looking at it “all in.” Is it an expensive hobby? Yes. But, I think the physical/emotional rewards are better than a lot of other expensive hobbies. Good exercise. Good social interactions. Good mental exercise. One of the most shareable hobbies.

You’re not wrong. I just retired from army infantry just a couple weeks ago. I’ve saved money for 17 years planning on buying a boat and sailing. I’ve passed up so many things in my army career just for that dream. I’ve flown small airplanes because my father built and flies them I’ve gotten heavy into rc giant scale planes and honestly any hobby is expensive and you can spend forever and ever or you can do it as you outlined and be happy. I am not rich I was enlisted in the army so it limits me for sure. I can’t buy a quarter million dollar boat. I bought a full keel alberg 37 cause I know I want to cross oceans and it will do it and I paid less than 20k for the boat in pretty good shape. And still have money left for the upkeep

@@alanluscombe8a553 that’s the way to do it. And you can potentially shop for the region with most economical marina expenses. If your retirement income is sufficient, you can truly go anywhere. @@just-dl thank you I really appreciate it. I really had no clue what I was getting into nobody I knew growing up sailed boats. I was stationed in Savannah ga and would use my leave and find people cool enough to take me on their boats in the inner coastal waterways around southeast ga and Florida. When I was looking at boats I was looking at boats around 80k and while there was very nice boats I figured out no matter how much I spent I’m still spending money to do things to it. So I found out about albergs and cape dory boats and how people have taken them everywhere. It was nice to buy the boat cash and know I can do all of the required things to get going. It is incredible how nice some of these boats get though I looked at a couple that were so impressive but just a lot of cash ya know. Also with buying an older boat I was able to buy a large rv and pickup that I will keep in storage so when I feel like I can park the boat and have somewhere to stay

I think paying cash for the boat is the only way. because you're cash flow is not impacted at all. other than emergency issues, your expenses will be discretionary. budget $XXX for boat toys/upgrades, and if money is tight one month...hold off. I just bought a car this week...cash. While it's not brand new and not the nicest in the world, it suits me, and next month...I'm not digging into my wallet for another couple of hundred...My dad always said the new car smell disappears a long time before the new car payment. Some with boats....And, I like the idea of buying about that's been across the ocean once or twice. Enjoy it!

I was pleased to see your coverage of the Pearson 303. I actually bought one of these in Rhode Island a couple of years ago, and had it trucked to Florida. NOTE: The Pearson 303 is not the same boat as Pearson 30. Pearson built hundreds of the 30s primarily. The 303 are beamer and better outfitted for coastal cruising. I have spent a lot refitted her electrical and navigational systems- some of which I now know was unnecessary. A tablet running Navionics is a lot cheaper than a Raymarine Axiom + 9 networked. But there is definitely a learning curve with buying a boat so be too hard on yourself if you discover a better way of doing things later on.😮

This Erickson 29 I bought was going for 7 grand next to me at the marina. The old guy who owned it had a friend checking on it and he told me it could probably be had for $2500 and not to tell... I called the owned after waiting a couple days as if I was waiting to call a girl who gave me her number.. and I wasn’t crazy about her...long story short I got the boat for $2,500 outfitted with newer sails and all kinds of gear. I have completely refit my boat the past three years to live in San Juan’s. Now the boat is worth over $40k. It sits across from a 1980’s Erickson 38 that sold for $58k. I’m working on fab for stainless arch and davits now. I really get into shit! Go for it you guys! Don’t wait till your old this boat work kicks your ass but keeps you buff! Live on her while you get her going!

Love your video. In regards affordable boats I would like to mention our O'Day 25; which had a shoal draft and trailer; a great starter boat for our family of 5when we were young, about 30 years ago. Every summer launch Tobermory Kingston etc to cruise for a week or 2 Killarney, 1000 islands etc. It cost us 7,500 at the time. For 6 years we owned a Hunter 33.5 and put almost 5,000 km on it ...north channel, and finally via welland to Kingston for a few years. Cost $45,000 plus duty etc. Sold it 4 years ago for what we bought it for. To keep price down we bought an old a boat as possible with aft cabin, modern layout with sugar scoop. I never thought I would own such a wonderful boat.

When you say that this Pearson is a 30 footer you need to understand that Pearson made two 30 foot boats. The one shown here is the 303 cruising model. They also sold hundreds of Pearson 30s which are much narrower and used primarily as a race boat. I bought the 303 model like the one you are showing in 2021. Everything but the hull and engine has been updated to 2022 standards. It was hard in NE Florida to find and pay for marine techs and to pay them what they charge. The refit is now near completion and I am beginning to take her out in the ocean. She is very well behaved and seems to enjoy gusts and sails well to windward.

Tim is doing a great job encouraging people to get into sailing, but 20 -40 year old boats require much more maintenance than your house or car and don't have the skills to do this yourself, it can be very expensive. Also moving them a thousand miles down the ICW can take weeks or even months before you arrive in the Bahamas. You have to really love the sport to put up with us and still be happy. Last week I saw a T-shirt on another channel which sums it up"Sailing. The most expensive way to get somewhere for free!😅

There are a ton of HR Misil 2, IF, Maxi 77, Vega, and boats like that for sale, that are perfectly fine for a week of sailing for under 3000$. Mine MM cost 500$ (including a trailer) and there was no work needed to go sailing for a couple of days.

Great video. As I may have mentioned in an earlier post, I had been looking for a boat for quite a while and finally bought one at the end of last season. I am happy to see that bargains are still or again possible. Lately, both because of the several KZbin sailing channels and especially because of COVID boats had became a very hot item. I didn’t even have the time to go see one and it’d sell so fast. Sellers received multiple offers, etc… I found it really really hard to find “hidden gems”, both because people were on a hunt and most sellers knew they could get more money. It seems (I hope) that things are slowing down again. I hope so. I do want to buy an other boat eventually (bigger and blue water ready / capable) but I don’t intend to over pay or having to buy under rush / pressure… ❤

Thanks! I agree 100%! I would love to. Honestly it comes down to hours in a day. By the time I write the script and then film, the editing begins and the whole thing takes forever. Sadly the short end of that stick ends up in taking the extra hour or two to align every picture with my words and I hate myself for not doing it. It is just a huge thing to take the time to do and I do try, but I know I fall short every time.

I remember the Oday story from a previous video! My cockpit seats are the level but the gunels do slope out. The in board Genoa tracks and sheets lead to angled blocks aft of the primary winches then come forward at an angle that matches the gunels outboard slope. Hey I apologize to you cause when I first saw your channel, for some reason it impressed me as you're one of those know-it-all sailors you hear cause they tend to be loud around the docks and wears one of those disney yachting caps, the white cloth with the round buoy patch on the front. But your donotbuy this boat videos caught my attention again and I gave your channel another looksee. So I changed my mind. You in fact know quite a bit about sailboats, at least more than I, even if you are a volvo guy. I deduced that from the bits of your sailing history that you throw in every so often - the racing stuff, the several types of boats you've sailed, how to really find a boat of your dreams to buy (not in the penny press). Not that it matters, but sorry I misjudged your channel. It's not every Jimmy Buffet clone that actually knows anything about sailboats and sailing.

As a yacht broker I've seen a pretty big uptick in estate sales. So I wouldn't say Yacht world is not a place to look. Also places like the maritime academy's often have great value boats. I do agree with the notion of getting started by doing week day evening racing to gain experience. Hopefully someone doesn't wind up on the yelling for communication type boat!!

I found the trick is balance. For every pound in the front, you need a pound in the back. Keep the water line flush!

Yes to the Pearson 30, including the classic-plastic design prior, which actually sails better. The Hunter 27 shown will go sideways far too often. I've sailed and sold them. Bad boat. I'd give one to Trump for sure. A Catalina 27 with the deep fin would be the way to go and you might even find a Catalina 30 for 10K, but stay away from the shoal draft versions unless you have problem waters. Older C&C's are also a good bet and it's not uncommon to find Alberg 30's for cheap. Bristols, Tartan, Cal, and many others are great deals, but avoid projects. You'll likely spend 3 times more than you think! Older sailors my enjoy heavier designs, such as the Cape Dory 25 or 30. I'm a former sailboat broker who's sailed everything from O'Day's to Moody's and Swans. My current beneteau 393 will soon be sold to make way for a larger faster design. But I had a ton of fun on my 1973 Catalina 27 years ago!

Funfact.... The "cheap" boats will be overrun by repair costs. Mooring fees skyrocketing to a extend that people abandoning their vessels. There is no alternative no more. The "middle class" of boat owners is declining. Get a trailer sailer if you ain't have money to burn or get a 40ft. and pay yourself senseless. The choice is yours. But always remember. You buy an ole vessel, you deal with the sellers headaches, he had with that thing.

@Lady K Sailing we are saying we miss seeing your sailing content! Slightly passive-aggressive response, but valid! Have you detailed the Capri brand from Catalina? The Capri 25 is what we cut our teeth on, sailing on a mountain reservoir with erratic and strong winds. Definitely a "Racer/cruiser" but 2 people can spend the weekend on one if they like each other 😍 The other classic plastic I love is the O'Day 25, with the centerboard. My parents had one and I grew up sailing on that boat. Your channel is probably one of the only channels that mentions O'Day, I think they made a 35' center cockpit and even a 40'?
